Context of Isaiah 36:17
15nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will most certainly rescue us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 16Do not listen to Hezekiah,’ for this is what the king of Assyria says, ‘Make peace with me and come out to me, and each one of you will eat from his own vine and each from his own fig tree and each [one of you] drink from the water of his own cistern, until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18Beware that Hezekiah does not mislead you by saying, “The Lord will rescue us.” Has any one of the gods of the nations [ever] rescued his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad [in Aram]? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? And when have they rescued Samaria from my hand?

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17And vineyards - The other copy, 2 Kings 18:32, adds here: "A land of oil-olive, and of honey; that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah when he seduceth you."Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17Until I come - These are the words of the king of Assyria delivered by Rabshakeh. It was proposed that they should remain safely in Jerusalem until Sennacherib should himself come and remove them to his own land. He was now engaged in the siege of Lachish Isaiah 36:2, and it is probable that he purposed to take some other of the unsubdued towns in that part of Palestine. And take you away - It was common for conquerors in ancient times to remove a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-17The Assyrian tried to lure the people of Jerusalem with supplies that the Lord promised to give to his obedient followers (see Isaiah 1:19; 37:30–35; Deuteronomy 8:7–9). It was a tempting offer, but it was fake. It hid the truth of the exile that would have come after (Isaiah 36:17).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-22This and the thirty-seventh through thirty-ninth chapters form the historical appendix closing the first division of Isaiah's prophecies, and were added to make the parts of these referring to Assyria more intelligible. So Jr 52:1-34; compare 2Ki 25:1-30. The section occurs almost word for word (2Ki 18:13, 17-20; 19:1-37); 2Ki 18:14-16, however, is additional matter. Hezekiah's "writing" also is in Isaiah, not in Kings (Is 38:9-20). We know from 2Ch 32:32…Read the comment
