Context of Isaiah 36:17
15Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 16Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern; Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17Until I come - These are the words of the king of Assyria delivered by Rabshakeh. It was proposed that they should remain safely in Jerusalem until Sennacherib should himself come and remove them to his own land. He was now engaged in the siege of Lachish Isaiah 36:2, and it is probable that he purposed to take some other of the unsubdued towns in that part of Palestine. And take you away - It was common for conquerors in ancient times to remove a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-17The Assyrian tried to lure the people of Jerusalem with supplies that the Lord promised to give to his obedient followers (see Isaiah 1:19; 37:30–35; Deuteronomy 8:7–9). It was a tempting offer, but it was fake. It hid the truth of the exile that would have come after (Isaiah 36:17).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-22This and the thirty-seventh through thirty-ninth chapters form the historical appendix closing the first division of Isaiah's prophecies, and were added to make the parts of these referring to Assyria more intelligible. So Jr 52:1-34; compare 2Ki 25:1-30. The section occurs almost word for word (2Ki 18:13, 17-20; 19:1-37); 2Ki 18:14-16, however, is additional matter. Hezekiah's "writing" also is in Isaiah, not in Kings (Is 38:9-20). We know from 2Ch 32:32…Read the comment
