Context of Isaiah 33:17
15He who walks righteously and speaks with integrity, Who rejects gain from fraud and from oppression, Who shakes his hand free from the taking of bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed And shuts his eyes to avoid looking upon evil; 16He will dwell on the heights, His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks, His bread will be given him; His water will be permanent. Your eyes will see the King in His beauty; They will see a far-distant land. 18Your mind will meditate on the terror [asking]: “Where is he who counts? Where is he who weighs [the tribute]? Where is he who counts the towers?” 19You will no longer see the fierce and insolent people, A people of unintelligible speech which no one comprehends, Of a strange and stammering tongue which no one understands.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17Thine eyes - The eyes of the righteous, described in Isaiah 33:15. Shall see the king in his beauty - Some understand this of the Assyrian king. Thus Kimchi understands it, and supposes it means that they shall see him at the walls of Jerusalem; that is, shall see him destroyed. Vitringa supposes it means Yahweh himself as the king of his people, and that they should see him in his glory. Others suppose it relates to the Messiah. But the immediate…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-24Verses 15-24 The true believer watches against all occasions of sin. The Divine power will keep him safe, and his faith in that power will keep him easy. He shall want nothing needful for him. Every blessing of salvation is freely bestowed on all that ask with humble, believing prayer; and the believer is safe in time and for ever. Thine--the saints'. king in ... beauty--not as now, Hezekiah in sackcloth, oppressed by the enemy, but King Messiah (Is 32:1) "in His beauty" (So 5:10, 16; Re 4:3). land ... very far off--rather, "the land in its remotest extent" (no longer pent up as Hezekiah was with the siege); see Margin. For Jerusalem is made the scene of the king's glory (Is 33:20, &c.), and it could not be said to be "very far off," unless the far-off land be heaven, the…Read the comment
