Context of 1 Chronicles 10:3
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from them and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines followed closely after Saul and his sons and overtook them, and the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. The battle became heavy against Saul, and the archers found him; and he was [mortally] wounded by the archers. 4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised [Philistines] will come and abuse and humiliate me.” But his armor bearer would not, for he was terrified. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-14The story of Israel as a kingdom starts with Saul's death. Saul did not achieve God's plans for him as king or for Israel as a nation. His death made way for David, whom the Chronicler saw as Israel's first true king.Read the comment
