Revelation 3:2-21

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Ms 33, 1894

9LtMs, Ms 33, 1894, par. 5

The Lord says, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. ... Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” [Revelation 2:4, 5, 16.] It is time that Satan be cast out. It is time to call things by the right name. “Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die; for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. ... He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” [Revelation 3:2, 3, 5.]

9LtMs, Ms 33, 1894, par. 6

The message to the Laodicean church is highly applicable to us as a people. It has been placed before us for a long time, but has not been heeded as it should have been. When the work of repentance is earnest and deep, the individual members of the church will buy the rich goods of heaven. Jesus says, “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.” [Verse 18.]

9LtMs, Ms 33, 1894, par. 10

“Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. ... To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it; for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. ... Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” [Revelation 3:4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 21.]

Revelation 3:2-22

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Ms 143, 1901

16LtMs, Ms 143, 1901, par. 7

What is to be done? The True Witness points out the only remedy: “Repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” [Revelation 2:5.] Christ will cease to take your name upon His lips in His intercession with the Father, unless there is a decided change in the life and character of those who have wandered from the living God and forsaken His service. Jesus declares, “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” And yet the case is not altogether beyond remedy. The Mediator has not left them hopeless. He says, “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed.” [Revelation 3:15-18.]

16LtMs, Ms 143, 1901, par. 9

The world’s Redeemer declares, “I have kept my Father’s commandments.” [John 15:10.] “I counsel thee,” saith the True Witness, “to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear.” [Revelation 3:18.] Christ’s righteousness will not cover the unrighteousness of any one. “All unrighteousness is sin,” and “sin is the transgression of the law” [1 John 5:17; 3:4], therefore, those who are breaking the law of God and teaching others to break it will not be covered with the garments of Christ’s righteousness. He came not to save men in their sins, but from their sins. ...

16LtMs, Ms 143, 1901, par. 10

The True Witness presents encouragements to all who are seeking to walk in the path of humble obedience through faith in His name. He declares, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” [Revelation 3:21.] These are the words of our Substitute and Surety. ... Victory is assured through faith and obedience. Let us make an application of the words of Christ to our own individual cases. Are we poor, and blind, and wretched, and miserable? Then let us seek the gold and white raiment that He offers. The work of overcoming is not restricted to the age of the martyrs. The conflict is for us, in these days of subtle temptation to worldliness, to self-security, to indulgence of pride, covetousness, false doctrines, and immorality of life. “By their fruits ye shall know them” [Matthew 7:20], and every church is to bear the test of God’s law. Shall we stand before the proving of God?

16LtMs, Ms 143, 1901, par. 12

[Quote Revelation 3:2, 5-8.]

16LtMs, Ms 143, 1901, par. 18

We thank the Lord with all the heart that we have precious light to present before the people, and we rejoice that we have a message for this time which is present truth. The tidings that Christ is our righteousness has brought relief to many, many souls, and God says to His people, “Go forward.” [Exodus 14:15.] The message to the Laodicean church is applicable to our condition. How plainly is pictured the position of those who think they have all the truth, who take pride in their knowledge of the Word of God, while its sanctifying power has not been felt in their lives. The fervor of the love of God is wanting in their hearts, but it is this very fervor of love that makes God’s people the light of the world. The True Witness says of a cold, lifeless, Christless church, “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot; I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Mark the following words: “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” [Revelation 3:15-17.] Here is represented a people who pride themselves in their possession of spiritual knowledge and advantages. But they have not responded to the unmerited blessings that God has bestowed upon them. They have been full of rebellion, ingratitude, and forgetfulness of God; and still He has dealt with them as a loving, forgiving father deals with an ungrateful, wayward son. They have resisted His grace, abused His privileges, slighted His opportunities, and have been satisfied to sink down in contentment, in lamentable ingratitude, hollow formalism, and hypocritical insincerity. With Pharisaic pride they have vaunted themselves till it has been said of them, “Thou sayest, I am rich and increased with goods, and have need of nothing.”

16LtMs, Ms 143, 1901, par. 20

The great Redeemer represents Himself as a heavenly merchantman, laden with riches, calling from house to house, presenting His priceless goods, and saying, “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” [Verses 18-20.]

16LtMs, Ms 143, 1901, par. 60

The voice of the True Witness calls to His chosen people, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” [Revelation 3:19-22.] We have tried to arouse our brethren to the fact that the Lord has rich blessings to bestow upon us as a people. The people of God have lost much by not maintaining the simplicity of the truth as it is in Jesus. This simplicity has been crowded out, and forms and ceremonies and a round of busy activities in mechanical work have taken its place. Pride and lukewarmness have made the professed people of God an offence in His sight. Boastful self-sufficiency and complacent self-righteousness have masked and concealed the beggary and nakedness of the soul, but with God all things are naked and manifest. Yet Jesus is going from door to door, standing in front of every soul-temple, proclaiming, “I stand at the door, and knock.” As a heavenly merchantman, He opens His treasures and cries, “Buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear.” [Verse 18.] The gold He offers is without alloy, more precious than that of Ophir, for it is faith and love. The white raiment He invites the soul to wear is His own robes of righteousness, and the oil for anointing is the oil of His grace, which will give spiritual eyesight to the soul in blindness and darkness, that he may distinguish between the workings of the Spirit of God and the spirit of the enemy. “Open your doors,” says the great Merchantman, the possessor of spiritual riches, “and transact your business with Me. It is I, your Redeemer, who counsels you to buy of Me.”

“If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.” Revelation 3:3. The advent of Christ will surprise the false teachers. They are saying, “Peace and safety.” Like the priests and teachers before the fall of Jerusalem, they look for the church to enjoy earthly prosperity and glory. The signs of the times they interpret as foreshadowing this. But what saith the word of Inspiration? “Sudden destruction cometh upon them.” 1 Thessalonians 5:3. Upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth, upon all who make this world their home, the day of God will come as a snare. It comes to them as a prowling thief.

Chapter 20—A Great Religious Awakening

GC 370.2

“No man knoweth the day nor the hour” was the argument most often brought forward by rejecters of the advent faith. The scripture is: “Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no not the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” Matthew 24:36. A clear and harmonious explanation of this text was given by those who were looking for the Lord, and the wrong use made of it by their opponents was clearly shown. The words were spoken by Christ in that memorable conversation with His disciples upon Olivet after He had for the last time departed from the temple. The disciples had asked the question: “What shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the world?” Jesus gave them signs, and said: “When ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.” Verses 3, 33. One saying of the Saviour must not be made to destroy another. Though no man knoweth the day nor the hour of His coming, we are instructed and required to know when it is near. We are further taught that to disregard His warning, and refuse or neglect to know when His advent is near, will be as fatal for us as it was for those who lived in the days of Noah not to know when the flood was coming. And the parable in the same chapter, contrasting the faithful and the unfaithful servant, and giving the doom of him who said in his heart, “My Lord delayeth His coming,” shows in what light Christ will regard and reward those whom He finds watching, and teaching His coming, and those denying it. “Watch therefore,” He says. “Blessed is that servant, whom his Lord when He cometh shall find so doing.” Verses 42, 46. “If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.” Revelation 3:3.

Some nights ago there was repeated to me, with deep earnestness, the message: Call every soul possible away from the deceptive, perverting influence of those who have known the truth and have had continual warnings, and yet who will follow their own course of action and will repeat falsehood after falsehood to deceive if possible the very elect. You and many others are in danger from those who have departed from the faith and given heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. I entreat of you to break away from Battle Creek, that you may take hold with those who will believe the messages God gives, and who will be as true as steel in holding fast their confidence in the Word firm unto the end. In Sardis, many had been converted through the preaching of the apostles. The truth had been received as a bright and shining light. But some had forgotten the wonderful manner in which they had received the truth, and Jesus found it necessary to send reproof. One after another of the old standard-bearers had fallen, and some had become wearied of the oft-repeated truths. They desired a new phase of doctrine, more pleasing to many minds. They thought they needed a wonderful change and in their spiritual blindness did not discern that their sophistries would uproot all the experiences of the past. But the Lord Jesus could see the end from the beginning. Through John He sent them the warning, “Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.” [Revelation 3:3.]

Human interpretations, the reception of fables, will spoil your faith, confuse your understanding, and make of none effect your faith in Jesus Christ. Study diligently the third chapter of Revelation. In it is pointed out the danger of losing your hold upon the things that you have heard and learned from the Source of all light. “Remember ... how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent” [Revelation 3:3]. Why repent? Because there have come in faults in the form of theories so subtle that by the influence of mind upon mind—through the agency of those who have departed from the faith—the wily foe will cause you imperceptibly to be imbued with the spirit that will draw you away from the faith.—Letter 230, 1906, pp. 3-4. All who have truly repented of sin, and by faith claimed the blood of Christ as their atoning sacrifice, have had pardon entered against their names in the books of heaven; as they have become partakers of the righteousness of Christ, and their characters are found to be in harmony with the law of God, their sins will be blotted out, and they themselves will be accounted worthy of eternal life. The Lord declares, by the prophet Isaiah: “I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for Mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” Isaiah 43:25. Said Jesus: “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.” “Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in heaven.” Revelation 3:5; Matthew 10:32, 33.

And to the accuser of His people He declares: “The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?” Zechariah 3:2. While the man of business is absorbed in the pursuit of gain, while the pleasure-lover is seeking indulgence, while the daughter of fashion is arranging her adornments,—it may be in that hour the Judge of all the earth will pronounce the sentence, “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.”

The five wise virgins represent those who have perfected a Christian character, who have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. God’s message to His people is: “Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard; and hold fast and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. Thou hast a few names ... which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” [Revelation 3:3-5.]

Revelation 3:3-8

The Three Angels’ Messages

Historical setting

3AM 46.2

3AM 77.3

Many and earnest were the efforts made to overthrow their faith. None could fail to see that if the earthly sanctuary was a figure or pattern of the heavenly, the law deposited in the ark on earth was an exact transcript of the law in the ark in heaven; and that an acceptance of the truth concerning the heavenly sanctuary involved an acknowledgment of the claims of God’s law and the obligation of the Sabbath of the fourth commandment. Here was the secret of the bitter and determined opposition to the harmonious exposition of the Scriptures that revealed the ministration of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary. Men sought to close the door which God had opened, and to open the door which He had closed. But “He that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth,” had declared: “Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.” Revelation 3:7, 8. Christ had opened the door, or ministration, of the most holy place, light was shining from that open door of the sanctuary in heaven, and the fourth commandment was shown to be included in the law which is there enshrined; what God had established, no man could overthrow.

Please read these things. The angel came from heaven and found John exiled there on the isle of Patmos, and told him all these things that were to transpire in the last days. He wants us to know it. He wants us to be prepared for it. He wants us to have the crown of life, that we shall not perish with the wicked. We are very anxious that you should have it. I will just read a few words in Revelation, third chapter. Verse 18. “gold.” What is it? He has promised us, “Let not your heart be troubled ....” [John 14:1.] Now that is what He is preparing for us, and we want to prepare for it.

20LtMs, Ms 191, 1905, par. 41

Those that enter heaven, let me tell you, will know it here on this earth, that is, they take right hold of heavenly things. They do not seek the fashions of this degenerate age. They seek the heavenly disposition, and they seek to speak in a heavenly manner. They seek to overcome, and we want every one of you to engage in the warfare. You are soldiers of Jesus Christ. “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire ....” [Revelation 3:18.]

20LtMs, Ms 191, 1905, par. 43

Verse 19. You that have lived a half life to Christ, He wants you now to anoint your eyes with eyesalve that you may see there is something else, that you must go deeper.

20LtMs, Ms 191, 1905, par. 44

Verses 20, 21. “to him that overcometh.” The battle is before us. Do not think you have overcome if anyone stirs your temper, that you will let loose a whole mouthful of bitter words. It will not answer, because your words are a talent, and your spirit is a talent. It is God’s talent, and He wants that talent in brain and bone and muscle, in speech, in voice. All these He had died to have you use to His glory, to wash you and make you white in the blood of the Lamb.

20LtMs, Ms 191, 1905, par. 45

Verse 21. Do you see that He had all that battle to go through, with Satan tempting Him at every step that He would commit sin, that the whole world would be lost? He preached, and then He would go out into the wilderness and pour out His heart and soul before God. He was praying for us. He has left this world, and gone to His Father, but He says, “To him that overcometh ... churches.” [Verses 21, 22.]

If the rush of work is allowed to drive us from our purpose of seeking the Lord daily, we shall make the greatest mistakes; we shall incur losses, for the Lord is not with us; we have closed the door so that He cannot find access to our souls. But if we pray even when our hands are employed, the Saviour’s ear is open to hear our petitions. If we are determined not to be separated from the Source of our strength, Jesus will be just as determined to be at our right hand to help us, that we may not be put to shame before our enemies. The grace of Christ can accomplish for us that which all our efforts will fail to do. Those who love and fear God may be surrounded with a multitude of cares, and yet not falter or make crooked paths for their feet. God takes care of you in the place where it is your duty to be. But be sure, as often as possible, to go where prayer is wont to be made. The Saviour says, “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white: for they are worthy.” Revelation 3:4. These souls overcame by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Amid the moral pollution that prevailed on every hand, they held fast their integrity. And why? They were partakers of the divine nature, and thus they escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. They became rich in faith, heirs to an inheritance of more value than the gold of Ophir. Only a life of constant dependence upon the Saviour is a life of holiness.

By faith she “looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” “These all died in faith not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” [Hebrews 11:10, 13.] I feel sad as I see one after another of the old standard-bearers laying off their armor, and yet I rejoice. “Thou hast a few names, even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white; for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” [Revelation 3:4, 5.] I say I feel sad to see the old faithful tried ones passing away one by one but I do not mourn for them. With Paul they can say, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me on that day; and not to me only, but unto all those that love his appearing.” [2 Timothy 4:7, 8.]

He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Revelation 3:5.

YRP 364.2

The expression “he that overcometh” indicates that there is something for every one of us to overcome. The overcomer is to be clothed in the white raiment of Christ’s righteousness, and of Him it is written: “I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” Oh, what a privilege it is to be an overcomer, and to have our names presented before the Father by the Saviour Himself! And when, as overcomers, we shall be “clothed in white raiment,” the Lord will acknowledge our faithfulness as verily as in the days of the early Christian church. He acknowledged the “few names even in Sardis” who had “not defiled their garments” (Revelation 3:4); and we shall walk with Him in white, for through His atoning sacrifice we shall be accounted worthy.

YRP 364.5

The True Witness declares: “Behold, I have set before thee an open door” (verse 8). Let us thank God with heart and soul and voice; and let us learn to approach unto Him as through an open door, believing that we may come freely with our petitions, and that He will hear and answer. It is by a living faith in His power to help, that we shall receive strength to fight the battles of the Lord with the confident assurance of victory.—The Review and Herald, July 9, 1908.

Such determination is uncommon in the marketplace, uncommon in men of business; but let it not be a rare thing in the medical profession, for above every other calling this requires men of sterling integrity, men who will not be bought or sold. In his daily life the true Christian will be “not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.” [Romans 12:11.] Christ is our example in all things. To Him we are responsible in all our works, hour by hour, moment by moment. Amid the moral pollution that prevailed on every hand, they held fast their integrity. And why? They were partakers of the Divine Nature, and thus they escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. The great Husbandman does not localize. He cares for all His churches alike. Some lines of the work have [not] been moving forward because of limited resources. In some places the cause is struggling for an existence. The “few names” in Sardis, the “little strength” in Philadelphia, forbid that we make any outlay of means that is not positively necessary. [Revelation 3:4, 8.] The seeds of truth are to be sown; the missionary settlements are to be tenderly guarded and faithfully supported; the unlettered and lowly are to be given encouragement and help. Not one line of the work is to be bound about or hindered. In every place the shepherds are to watch for souls as they that must give an account. The prayers of all are to unite for the success of the cause of truth. And the Husbandman, with patience and discrimination, will care for the seed sown.

While men cannot live upon their knees in the marketplace, yet the silent heart’s earnest desire presented to heaven finds access to the Father through the watchers. The way to the throne of God is open, and all who have the fear of God before them and desire to walk in His counsel will seek His strength to do His will in crowded companies as well as in the chapel. It is in these very places that the men in large responsibilities may hear the voice of Christ saying in His Word, “I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” Revelation 3:8. Hold no parleying with Satan, but meet him with “It is written.” “Quit you like men, be strong.” [1 Corinthians 16:13.] Faith alone, unfeigned, can be the basis of our actions and prove by a clean, pure example that it is possible to be active, “Not slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11) and then all commercial enterprises will be conducted on Bible principles, in God’s way, and the fabric will stand on a solid foundation.

Man cannot bow upon his knees in the streets and in the market place to offer up his prayers to God, but never forget, wherever you may be, that there is a God upon whom you may call for wisdom. The Lord declared to John: “Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it; for thou hast a little strength, and hast not denied my name.” [Revelation 3:8.]

These words are given for the people while they are in connection with the world, subject to temptations and influences which are deceiving and deluding. While they stay their mind upon Him who is their sun and their shield, the blackness and darkness that surround them will not leave one spot or stain upon their garments. They will walk with Christ. They will pray and believe and work to save the souls that are ready to perish. These are trying to break the bands that Satan has fastened upon them, and they will not be put to shame if by faith they will make Christ their companion. Temptations and deceptions will be constantly brought up by the great deceiver to spoil the work of the human agent, but if he trusts in God, if he is humble and meek and lowly of heart, keeping the way of the Lord, heaven will rejoice, for he will gain the victory. God says, “He shall walk with me in white, (with unsullied garments,) for he is worthy.” [Verse 4.]

Have you clung to your confidence in God as a drowning man clings to the rope thrown to him to save him from the <boisterous> waves? “Hold that fast that thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” [Verse 11.] You need Christian manhood. The Word of God must be your standard. You must live a life of continual dependence on God. Personal holiness must be cultivated. The faith of others cannot save you. Their hope cannot give you courage. Their repentance, however acceptable to God, cannot avail for you. You must have personal religion. You need a deeper experience in the things of God. Put away from your life everything of a trifling character, and draw near to the great Physician. The time you spend in long talks that do no one any special good should be devoted to searching the Scriptures and to earnest prayer. This would give you vigor of mind and stability of character. To a deep religious experience would be added ability of a superior order, which would greatly aid you in your profession. God expects you to bring into your work sagacity, a soundness of faith and doctrine, and the unbending integrity that enabled Joseph and Daniel, in the corrupt courts of heathen monarchs, to live lives of unsullied purity. When Christ is formed within, the hope of glory, you will be well balanced. You will not be changeable, but will rise above the influences that discourage, discompose, and ruffle the minds of those who are not stayed on Christ. You will be enabled to prove that it is possible to be <in your calling esteemed as> a wise, successful physician and an active Christian, serving the Lord in sincerity. Godliness is the foundation of true dignity and completeness of character.

The Scriptures to you must be your supreme standard. You must have a life of continual dependency upon God. Personal holiness must be cultivated, and to this deep religious experience will surely be added ability of a superior order. In your profession you are expected to bring sagacity, soundness of faith, unbending integrity which Joseph had, which Daniel preserved in the courts of Babylon. You will have a well-balanced character, because Christ has formed within the heart the hope of glory. You will not be changeable, but will be raised up above the influence that would discourage, discompose, and disturb the mind. “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the Creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or not. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” [Revelation 3:14-16.] Here is represented a class of people who have not purified their soul by obedience to the truth. To these Christ says, “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve that thou mayest see.” [Verses 17, 18.]

In fleeing unto Jesus we shall be fully satisfied. “Or nakedness?”—hear the voice of Jesus saying, “Buy of me gold tired in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear.” [Revelation 3:18.] Although the children of God may suffer for food and clothing, shall this separate them from God? Let us be comforted with the promise, “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before His angels.” [Verses 4, 5.] “And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen white and clean; for the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints.” [Revelation 19:8.]

There are precious experiences for the youth to gain, if they will die to self, but if they cherish and exalt self, Christ will not work with or for them. Behold I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which they say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come, and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” [Verses 6-11.]

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Lt 21, 1886

4LtMs, Lt 21, 1886, par. 18

We are to meet our Lord in a short time, and what account will we give to Him of the use we have made of our time, our talents, and our money? I solemnly inquire of the Healdsburg church, Is God among you? Of a truth, “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments.” [Revelation 3:4.] Are you of this number? Have you held fast your integrity? As drowning men, have you clung to Jesus? Has your refuge been in Christ? Are you living for Him, obeying Him, loving Him who is pure and holy and undefiled, in whose mouth there is nothing savoring of guile? If so, you are most happy, for you are more precious in the sight of God than the golden wedge of Ophir.

4LtMs, Lt 21, 1886, par. 26

I have been shown several times that the Lord has rich blessings for the church in Healdsburg, if they will only come into a position where God can safely bless them, and where they are so humble, meek, and lowly, that they will not turn the rich grace of God to exalt and ruin themselves. The work of humility is greatly needed in this church. Many are devoid of vital faith and moral strength. They talk boastfully and independently as being rich in spiritual blessings when the facts in the case are they are “wretched and miserable, and poor and blind, and naked.” [Revelation 3:17.] Words of solemn warning are addressed to the church by the True Witness, against the sins of pride, worldliness, formalism, and self-sufficiency. “Be zealous, therefore, and repent” lest “I come unto thee quickly and remove thy candle-stick out of his place.” [Revelation 3:19; 2:5.]

4LtMs, Lt 21, 1886, par. 27

Words of gracious encouragement are presented to the lowly, the suffering, the patient, the faithful, who are alive to their true weakness and inefficiency. “Behold I stand at the door and knock, if any man will hear My voice and open the door, I will come in to him and sup with him and he with Me.” [Revelation 3:20.] The True Witness says to all, “I know thy works.” [Verse 15.] The same searching, scrutinizing eye is in the midst of all the churches in California; nothing passes that eye of flaming fire. The sinful departure from truth, the declensions and shortcomings need not be; for every provision has been made for them that they may perfect a Christian character and honor the cause of truth. The promise of God is given to the weak that they may take hold of His strength and make peace with Him, and He will make peace with them. His sympathy and love follow the trembling, conscientious soul. I hope and pray that you will walk in all lowliness of mind, that you will learn the precious lessons in the school of Christ, for whoever learns in Christ’s school will always be a blessing to those around them.

I had been, and still was, bowed down with distress of body and of mind. It seemed to me that I must bear a message to our people at Battle Creek. The words were to be in earnest. “Speak the words that I shall give thee, to prevent their doing things which would separate God from the publishing house and sacrifice pure and holy principles which must be maintained. The eyes of God were bent upon them in sorrow mingled with severe displeasure, and the words were spoken, “I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works, or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” Revelation 3:4, 5. There is no time to lose. God speaks. Men are serving the enemy and betraying sacred principles.

The Lord Jesus Christ says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: If any man will hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and sup with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20.

But there were a few faithful souls who were determined to be partakers of the divine nature. Daily they were tested and tried. Continually temptation came to them. But they watched and prayed, laying hold by faith on the One who is ever ready to hear the petition of the humblest suppliant. Another question upon which we had some conversation was in regard to the elect of God—that the Lord would have a certain number, and when that number was made up, then probation would cease. These are questions you or I have no right to talk about. The Lord Jesus will receive all who come unto Him. He died for the ungodly, and every man who will come may come. Certain conditions are to be complied with on the part of man, and if he refuses to comply with the conditions he cannot become the elect of God. If he will comply, he is a child of God; and Christ says if he will continue in faithfulness, steadfast and immovable in his obedience, He will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but will confess his name before His Father and before His angels. [Revelation 3:5.] God would have us think and talk and present to others those truths which are plainly revealed; and all have naught to do with these subjects of speculation, for they have no special reference to the salvation of our souls.

The Lord would have the wife of Manoah adhere to strict habits of temperance. “And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman, and said to her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive and bear a son. Now therefore beware I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing.” [Judges 13:3, 4.] The angel who appeared to Zacharias and Elisabeth said, “Thy prayer is heard and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost.” [Luke 1:13-15.] Here we have the child taken before his birth and after. You mothers should place value on these things. The appetites of the mother are transmitted to the children. Many who indulge in things to satisfy appetite are taking the underpinning right out of your house. There are men that might have had as clear a record as Daniel. Satan is playing his cards for your soul. We want to stand free and pure from the degradations of this world. “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.” [Revelation 3:5.] Christ overcame in our behalf. To John were opened the great events of the future, that were to shake the thrones of kings and cause all earthly powers to tremble. He beheld the close of all earthly scenes, the ushering in of His reign, who is to be King of kings, and whose kingdom shall endure forever. “Behold,” he said, “he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him.” [Revelation 1:7.] He saw Christ receiving the adoration of all the hosts of heaven and heard the promise that whatever tribulation might come upon God’s people, if they would but patiently endure, they should be more than conquerors through Him that loved them. This is a strange affair. The mother feels they have gone too far and is troubled in regard to the matter. But here we have to leave her. She was an excellent young woman—kind, loving, affectionate—but she was not satisfied with her religious experience. One week has passed and nothing has been heard from her, but the Lord can reach her wherever she is. We have lost all track of her, but the Lord can and will help her if she has not cast off her Lord through the great pressure brought to bear upon her. The Lord may work this matter out to His own name’s glory. The Lord Jesus is a compassionate Saviour. The Lord Jesus can speak to this dear soul: “The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil; He shall preserve thy soul.” [Psalm 121:7.] “The just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.” [Hebrews 10:38.] “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.” [John 8:31.] “He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” [Matthew 24:13.] “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” [1 Corinthians 16:13.] “Hold that fast which thou hast that no man take thy crown.” “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life.” [Revelation 3:11, 5.]

The Lord makes a covenant with His people. After being tested and tried, those who are loyal to His commandments are pronounced trustworthy members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King. God declares, “He that overcometh shall inherit all things,” “and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.” “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out, and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is New Jerusalem.” [Revelation 21:7; 3:5, 12.]

“These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth and shutteth and no man openeth: I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. Behold I will make them of the synagogue of Satan which say they are Jews and are not, but do lie: behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee; because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.” [Verses 7-10.]

14LtMs, Ms 42, 1899, par. 22

“Because thou hast kept the word of my patience.” Does this apply to the men who persecute those who conscientiously keep the commandments of God, who refuse to bow down to an idol sabbath and worship an institution of the Papacy. Who is keeping the word of God’s patience? This is a subject of intense interest, which none of us can afford to ignore, because God says of those who do keep the word of His patience, “I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation which shall come upon all.” The hour of test and trial will surely come, and is even now approaching. Christ declares, “Behold, I come quickly; hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” [Verses 10, 11.]

The Christian soldier will be trained through daily test to prove his fidelity. If in compliance with the conditions efforts are constantly made to “cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” [2 Corinthians 7:1], then God will do all He has promised; we shall have our names registered in the Lamb’s book of life, and in the investigative judgment the True Witness says, “I will not blot out his name out of the book of life.” [Revelation 3:5.] The names of the faithful will stand as sons and daughters of God, members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King.

Let the Christian physician remember that he has pledged himself to represent Christ to others in practice, in character. If he does not strictly guard himself, if he allows the barriers to be broken down, Satan will overcome him with his specious temptations. There will be a blemish in his character which will tell in its evil workings upon other minds and leave a molding influence upon other characters. God says, “I know thy works.” [Revelation 3:15.] The moral palsy of evil and sin will not only destroy the soul of the one who departs from strict principles, but will have the power to reproduce the same in others. It is not safe to be occasional Christians. We must be Christlike in all our actions always. Then, through grace, we are safe for time and for eternity. The experimental knowledge of the grace received in times of trial is of more value than gold or silver. It confirms the trusting, believing one in faith, in confidence that he has an everpresent helper in Jesus Christ, and gives him a firmness, a boldness in God, that will take Him at His word and trust Him with unwavering faith when brought into most trying positions. The Wonderful Counselor will be his strength. Prevarication for the sake of policy only makes matters worse. Never, never should the physician feel that he may prevaricate. It is not always safe and best to lay before the invalid the full extent of his danger. The truth may not all be spoken on all occasions, but never speak a lie. If it is important for the good of the invalid not to alarm him, lest such a course might prove fatal; do not lie to him, and never say that an honest, truthful physician cannot live. He can live, for he has God and Heaven on his side, and the practice of fraud and deception separates him from the God of truth.

There’s a time coming when names are to be blotted out of the book of life, names once written there; but He says unto them also, if you overcome, I will not blot out your names out of the book of life. [Revelation 3:5.] Here men and women play the game of life. Satan is wrestling for the soul, and the temptations are to assimilate to the world, to be like it, to be just as near like it as possible. Christ says, Come out from among them and be ye separate. [2 Corinthians 6:17.] It is the passions of the world that lead the world to think: “I have just as good a character as they have, and just as good a religion as they have. I don’t see that the religion that they profess does any more for them than mine does for me, and I think I stand just as good a chance as they do.” But suppose you place yourself on the elevated platform of eternal truth. The lawyer came to Christ and said, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” The Master says to him, “What says the law?” “Well,” says [one,] “thou shalt love the Lord thy God with just one quarter of your heart, and the rest you may give to your own inclinations. Just one quarter, one half, two thirds”—did He say that? Why, “thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind and with all thy strength, and thy neighbor as thyself. ... This do and thou shalt live.” [Luke 10:25-28.]

4LtMs, Ms 2, 1885, par. 24

It is our work to devote our God-given powers, to have them in living union with God, that we may have loveliness of character, and that we may know Jesus Christ. We shall find that we shall be the light of the world, that we shall attract not to ourselves, but to God; not to glorify us, but to glorify our Father which art in heaven. Every one of us has that work to do, but I am afraid the Master could not say “well done” to many of you today. Why? Because you are not doing one thing. Because you are not improving the talents of the mind; because the mind which God has given you, you are not trying to study how you can exalt the Master, glorify His name by the power He has given you. I will say again, I am afraid of nominal morality. I am afraid of religion without Jesus, where ye are neither cold nor hot. I would rather you were cold or hot. Because you are lukewarm you carry no loads, feel no distress for sinners, no agonies for souls as you see them dying around you. “Because thou art lukewarm I will spew thee out of My mouth.” [Revelation 3:16.] We are to wash our robes of character and make them white in the blood of the Lamb. What next? You don’t want to be blind to the world, to their wickedness and sin, that you should call sin righteousness and righteousness sin. You want to be wide-awake. You want to have the eyesalve applied to your eyes, that you may observe righteousness which you must have in order to be Christ’s. You want this discernment, that you may not be ignorant of Satan’s devices, that you may know how to defend yourself against him. After you have done what you can, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up the standard against the enemy. It is the power of the Almighty which is given to those who seek for it. All heaven is open to our demand. All heaven was poured out in one grand gift to man. What have we? We have Christ on our side, and then we are to walk with God. We are to feel that God and angels are willing to help us in the work, and then by and by when those trying scenes of the day of God hang upon us, then it will be seen who have been laying up treasure in heaven, who have been working out their own salvation with fear and trembling.

4LtMs, Ms 2, 1885, par. 25

Look at that little company of Christians. They are very small. They do not appear attractive. “It doth not yet appear what we shall be: but when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is. And every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.” [1 John 3:2, 3.] That is the work. They have a pure character. This is what we are working for, a pure heart, a loveliness of character, that our lives may not be blotted out of the book of life. He says: I will not blot out their names out of the book of life. [Revelation 3:5.] I will set before you an open door. No man can shut it. “I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.” [Verse 8.] How can you come on to these things and say that you cannot overcome? Why, yes, you can. I have set before thee an open door. No man can shut it. It has the strength of the Infinite One. It is the One who is our mediator. He is making atonement, and the light of the glory of God reflected upon the face of Jesus shineth upon us children here upon the earth which is strength for every one of us. Are you conquering day by day? It is those who have conquered whose names will not be blotted out of the book of life, but they shall enter in through the gates and have right to the tree of life. Blessed are they who do His commandments, for they shall enter in through the city, and they shall have right to the tree of life. I know that Satan is blinding the eye; I know he is shutting our very sight. Iniquity is interposing between us, but we want to get these things out, we want to get the soul temple cleansed, we want to open the door; for Jesus is knocking at the door of the heart, and we want to welcome Him in, and then we shall come nigh to God and lay hold of His mighty power, a present help in every time of need; and at last the city gates will be thrown wide, and the nations who have kept the faith shall enter in and have right to the tree of life.

Let Jesus Into Your Heart.—The fact is that Satan has been playing the game of life for the soul, but pride has come in and the grace of Christ is not abiding there. We want now to listen to the knocking and let Him in. He will come into congregations like this, but He wants to be invited into the soul. He says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20). Remove the rubbish, take away your love of self, and Jesus will surely come in if you open the door. Will you let Him in? There are some who never will; they keep piling up the rubbish. But who will open the door and let Jesus in? ...

We have a great deal more to do to care for the inward training that we may have the spirit of Christ. We do not want to find any with the spirit of murmuring and complaining. If you have Christ’s spirit you will find that when you are wounded you will not rise up in rebellion. What we want is the inward training. I want the spirit of Christ abiding in me, and Christ says, “If any man will hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20). We have been piling up the rubbish before the door of our hearts and this must all be cleared away. Christ cannot enter there until we do. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock,” He says. Clear away the barriers that have been piled up around the door of the heart. He wants you to clear them away and He will come in....

Here we have reason to rejoice. Here is One presented before us who has all power in heaven and in earth. And He says, “I have set before thee an open door and no man can shut it.” [Verse 7.] Could an angel have done this? Is there any greater being upon our earth that could have done this? Is there any power that could have opened this door for the human race? No man could close it. There is only One, He who is equal to Divinity, the Prince of life. He is the One in whom our hopes of eternal life are centered, the Majesty of heaven, the King of glory. It is He who left the royal throne, who left His high command, clothed His divinity with humanity, came down to this earth and was a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, tempted in all points like as we are, that He might know how to help those who are tempted.

Now when Christ has made the sacrifice He has for us, would it not be most ungrateful in us if we do not accept it? He came to save us from our sins, not in our sins, but from our sins. He came to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Will we allow the final mold to be placed upon us? A great plan has been devised, and now the question is, Will you serve God or Baal? We know what corruption is around us, and the inquiry comes up, What more could I do for My vineyard than I have done? What more could the Lord have done for His people than He has done? We need not wait for any special exercise of feeling before we surrender to God. We want Him at the very commencement of the work, and therefore, just as soon as we see that we have been rejecting God, we must come to Him and acknowledge that we have rejected Him and we now want to redeem the time. A great and infinite sacrifice has been made in our behalf, and now we want to show what we will do for ourselves. There is not one of us who will be placed in heaven with the mold of our own will.
