Is not this a great reward? But those who will take the burdens upon themselves, who will devote their God-given abilities to the doing of the words of Christ, those who will be partakers of His sufferings in this world, will be partakers with Him of His glory. “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame and am sat down with My Father on His throne.” Then the inspired Word follows: “He that hath ears to hear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” [Revelation 3:21, 22.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

“To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” [Revelation 3:21.] We are God’s denominated people, and by solemn covenant we have taken upon ourselves certain obligations. The charge comes that we are in no wise to be inattentive. “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith unto the churches.” [Verse 22.] We have placed ourselves under obligation to keep every precept of the law of God. Shall we not be loyal to the law of Jehovah? Only thus can we be subjects of His kingdom.Revelation 3:22

And John was instructed to write in a book what he saw, and to send it to all the churches. Brethren and sisters, we want to catch the divine inspiration, as we read and study the Word of God, that the light of the world shall so impress us that when error shall arise it may have no place in our hearts. Why? Because we have a view of things that are invisible. Every laborer should feel at perfect liberty to come right to God with the greatest confidence, and hear what He has to say to the churches. “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith unto the churches.” [Revelation 3:22.]EGW Writings — Ellen G. Grace abounds with Christ, and those who take their position on the side of the Redeemer become new creatures. In character they become one with God. Herein is love! God places the virtues of His character upon those who receive Him. Through His infinite sacrifice, He lifts the human race from its position of slavery to the will of Satan and makes men and women sons and daughters of the heavenly King. Only when we understand this great truth can we understand the words of Christ, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” [Revelation 3:21.]Our High Calling

But many say that Jesus was not like us, that He was not as we are in the world, that He was divine, and that we cannot overcome as He overcame. But Paul writes, “Verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted” (Hebrews 2:16-18). “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (chap. 4:15, 16). Jesus says, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my father in his throne” (Revelation 3:21).Sons and Daughters of God

I have been shown the high and responsible position which God’s people should occupy. They are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, and they must walk even as Christ walked. They will come up through great tribulation. The present is a time of warfare and trial. Our Saviour says in Revelation 3:21: “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” The reward is not given to all who profess to be followers of Christ, but to those who overcome even as He overcame. We must study the life of Christ and learn what it is to confess Him before the world.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6

The unfaithful steward did not enrich himself with his master’s goods; he merely wasted them. He let idleness take the place of sincere, wholehearted labor. He was unfaithful in the appropriation of his lord’s goods. Unfaithful steward, do you not see that you will lose your soul if you do not co-operate with God and make the most of your talents for the Master? Your mind was given that you might understand how to work. Your eyes were given that you might be keen to discern your God-given opportunities. Your ears are to listen for the commands of God. Your knees are to bow three times a day in heartfelt prayer. Your feet are to run in the way of God’s commandments. Thought, effort, talent, should be put into exercise, that you may be prepared to graduate into the school above and hear from the lips of One who has overcome all temptations in our behalf the words: “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” “Thus saith the Lord of hosts; If thou wilt walk in My ways, and if thou wilt keep My charge, then thou shalt also judge My house, and shalt also keep My courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.” Revelation 3:21; Zechariah 3:7. Said Christ, “Strive”—agonize—“to enter in....” We must feel our continual dependence upon God and the great weakness of our own wisdom and our own judgment and strength, and then depend wholly upon Him who has conquered the foe in our behalf, because He pitied our weakness and knew we should be overcome and perish if He did not come to our help.... Think not that by any easy or common effort you can win the eternal reward. You have a wily foe upon your track. “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne” (Revelation 3:21). Here is the battle to overcome as Christ has overcome. His life of temptation, of trial, of toil and conflict, is before us for us to imitate. We may make efforts in our own strength, but not succeed. But when we fall all helpless and suffering and needy upon the Rock of Christ, feeling in our inmost soul that our victory depends upon His merits, that all our efforts of themselves without the special help of the great Conqueror will be without avail, then Christ would send every angel out of glory to rescue us from the power of the enemy rather than that we should fall.33Letter 1b, 1873.The Acts of the Apostles

Long afterward, when John had been brought into sympathy with Christ through the fellowship of His sufferings, the Lord Jesus revealed to him what is the condition of nearness to His kingdom. “To him that overcometh,” Christ said, “will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” Revelation 3:21. The one who stands nearest to Christ will be he who has drunk most deeply of His spirit of self-sacrificing love,—love that “vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, ... seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil” (1 Corinthians 13:4, 5),—love that moves the disciple, as it moved our Lord, to give all, to live and labor and sacrifice even unto death, for the saving of humanity.Christ Triumphant

He “shall sit and rule upon His throne; and He shall be a priest upon His throne.” Not now “upon the throne of His glory;” the kingdom of glory has not yet been ushered in. Not until His work as a mediator shall be ended will God “give unto Him the throne of His father David,” a kingdom of which “there shall be no end.” Luke 1:32, 33. As a priest, Christ is now set down with the Father in His throne. Revelation 3:21. Upon the throne with the eternal, self-existent One is He who “hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows,” who “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin,” that He might be “able to succor them that are tempted.” “If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father.” Isaiah 53:4; Hebrews 4:15; 2:18; 1 John 2:1. His intercession is that of a pierced and broken body, of a spotless life. The Value of the Soul
SL 93.3
We must come nearer to the cross of Christ. Penitence at the foot of the cross is the first lesson of peace we have to learn. The love of Jesus—who can comprehend it? Infinitely more tender and self-denying than a mother’s love! If we would know the value of a human soul, we must look in living faith upon the cross, and thus begin the study which shall be the science and the song of the redeemed through all eternity. The value of our time and our talents can be estimated only by the greatness of the ransom paid for our redemption. What ingratitude do we manifest toward God when we rob Him of His own by withholding from Him our affections and our service! Is it too much to give ourselves to Him who has sacrificed all for us? Can we choose the friendship of the world before the immortal honors which Christ proffers—“to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne” (Revelation 3:21)?The Upward Look

Christ says, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne” (Revelation 3:21). There are temptations that we must meet. If we yield to them, we are on the losing side, and by meeting with defeat again and again, it becomes a habit to do wrong in the place of doing right. We thus reveal that we choose to work out the principles and attributes of Satan, rather than the principles and attributes of Jesus Christ....The Upward Look

We must never grow fainthearted, for it will be far worse for ourselves and for others within the reach of our influence. God requires us to behave with dignity under trials and temptations. “Blessed are the meek.”—Matthew 5:5.
MB 17.2
The meek “shall inherit the earth.” It was through the desire for self-exaltation that sin entered into the world, and our first parents lost the dominion over this fair earth, their kingdom. It is through self-abnegation that Christ redeems what was lost. And He says we are to overcome as He did. Revelation 3:21. Through humility and self-surrender we may become heirs with Him when “the meek shall inherit the earth.” Psalm 37:11.Ye Shall Receive Power

You may feel that you cannot meet the approval of heaven. You may say, “I was born with a natural tendency toward this evil, and I cannot overcome.” But every provision has been made by our heavenly Father whereby you may be able to overcome every unholy tendency. You are to overcome even as Christ overcame in your behalf. He says, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne” (Revelation 3:21). It was sin that imperiled the human family; and before man was created the provision was made that if man failed to bear the test, Jesus would become his sacrifice and surety, that through faith in Him, man might be reconciled to God, for Christ was the Lamb “slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). Christ died on Calvary that man might have power to overcome his natural tendencies to sin.Ye Shall Receive Power

There is hope for man. Christ says, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne” (Revelation 3:21). But let us never forget that the efforts we make in our own strength are utterly worthless. Our strength is weakness; our judgment foolishness. Only in the name and strength of our Conqueror can we conquer. When we are pressed with temptation, when un-christlike desires clamor for the mastery, let us offer fervent, importunate prayer to the heavenly Father, in the name of Christ. This will bring divine aid. In the Redeemer’s name we may gain the victory.Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene
Chapter 3—Effects of Stimulants
CTBH 40.2
It is not an easy matter to overcome the appetite for narcotics and stimulants. But in the name of Christ this great victory can be gained. His love for the fallen race was so great that he made an infinite sacrifice to reach them in their degradation, and through his divine power finally elevate them to his throne. But it rests with man whether Christ shall accomplish for him that which he is fully able to do. God cannot work against man’s will to save him from Satan’s artifices. Man must put forth his human power to resist and conquer at any cost; he must be a co-worker with Christ. Then, through the victory that it is his privilege to gain by the all-powerful name of Jesus, he may become an heir of God, and a partaker with Christ of his glory. No drunkard can inherit the kingdom of God; but “to him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” [Revelation 3:21.]Ye Shall Receive Power

My lungs and throat pained me very much, yet I believed God would help me upon that important occasion. My text was, “To him that overcometh,” etc. Revelation 3:21. The Lord gave me great freedom in addressing that immense crowd upon the subject of Christian Temperance. I labored to show that temperance must be lived out in our homes; that our children must be trained to temperate habits from the cradle, in order for them to be firm of principle, correct in their morals, and able, not only to withstand all temptations to intemperance themselves, but to wield a powerful influence over others in favor of the right. In their ignorance or carelessness, parents give their children the first lessons in intemperance. At the table, loaded with injurious condiments, rich food, and spiced knickknacks, the child acquires a taste for that which is hurtful to him, which tends to irritate the tender coats of the stomach, inflame the blood, and strengthen the animal passions. The appetite soon craves something stronger, and tobacco is used to gratify that craving. This indulgence only increasing the unnatural longing for stimulants, liquor-drinking is soon resorted to, and drunkenness follows. This is the course of the great highway to intemperance.Testimony Treasures, vol. 1

I have just spoken one hour to the patients at the Health Institute. They were very attentive and many of the patients were affected to tears. I took this text: “To him that overcometh” [Revelation 2:7, 17; 3:21], and I had perfect freedom. I spoke at the commencement of the Sabbath in the college building and not a few tears were shed. I prayed with them and the Lord indited prayer. I seemed to fasten upon the promises of God with faith. I never pitied the youth as I do now. There seems to be so little moral power in our world to withstand and resist temptation. My heart is drawn out in yearning tenderness for youth and children. If Jesus was, in His life, clothed with gorgeous apparel, if this example is given us, then we may imitate Him. If His life was meek and lowly, pure and full of good works, then the very best thing we can do is to imitate Jesus. We tried to encourage the exercise of faith. We could not teach the unconverted or the backslider or those who were seeking for a deeper experience in the things of God, that they had nothing to do but to believe. This doctrine is pleasant to a very large class, that Jesus has done it all, and they have nothing to do but believe. [This doctrine] is a deception of Satan. There is something for every one of us to do, if we ever enter the golden gates of the city of God. Said Jesus, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne.” Revelation 3:21. [1 Corinthians 9:27.] Those who in ancient time ran for a prize realized the importance of temperate habits, and how much more should we, who are running a race for a heavenly crown. We should put forth every effort to overcome evil. Christ came to set us an example of how to overcome. He endured a fast of forty days, and He has made it possible for man to overcome on the point of appetite. The battle is before us. We must fight valiantly. If we are successful, we shall one day realize the fulfilment of the promise, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” [Revelation 3:21.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

God is not pleased to have his representatives worry and wear themselves out so that they cannot diffuse the sweet fragrance of heaven in their lives. We have but one life to live in this world. Jesus came to teach us how to live that life, that we may represent the character of heaven. We must never grow fainthearted; for it would be far worse for ourselves and others within the sphere of our influence than if we bore our trials with courage and fortitude. God requires us to behave with dignity under trials and temptations. The man of sorrows who was acquainted with grief is before us as our example. “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” [Revelation 3:21.] Let us ever preserve the love of Jesus, presenting the truth as it is in Him.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

Christ was so interested in us that He fasted forty days that He might bring light to the world on overcoming appetite. Who appreciates it? It is, “What shall I eat?” and “What shall I drink?” [Matthew 6:25.] When Sunday comes, where is our life? The mind is beclouded by an overburdened stomach, and we have no freedom in prayer. In this meeting are two parties. Here are Christ and His angels. They are here to help the truth find our hearts. Here are Satan and his angels to rob us of the blessings we might receive. In the morning evil angels will try to cause you to lose all these things. How important it is that we be under Christ’s banner, that we may have more than human strength to overcome. “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame and am set down with My Father in His throne.” Revelation 3:21. What does this little life amount to? This earth will soon pass away. If we build on hay and stubble, the fires of the last days will consume our work. I have too much regard for your soul than to tell you as some surely will do, that it shall be well with you when you are taking such a course dishonoring your manhood, defacing the moral image of God in your soul, deceiving your own heart, dishonoring the God who has bought you with the price of His own blood. Man’s nature is enmity against God. Christ came clothed with humanity and then humanity touched humanity, and by living faith men grasp Christ and repent that they have transgressed the law of God. As they repent He forgives their transgressions. So it is Christ from first to last. Now we want our brethren to see this. What is man to do? Have faith. What kind of faith? To believe that Christ is the propitiation for our sins, and that He brought immortality to light. But what are we to do? Why, this faith is a working faith. Will a farmer fail to sow seed yet expect a harvest? No more will you unless you are active workers in the cause of God and put to the stretch every muscle, every energy. “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” [Revelation 3:21.] What does that mean? We will never gain strength in considering what we might do if we were angels. We are to turn in faith to Jesus Christ, and show our love to God through obedience to His commands. Jesus “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” [Hebrews 4:15.] Jesus says, “Follow Me.” “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” [Matthew 16:24.] Jesus leads the way. Do not wait and continue in disobedience, hoping circumstances may change, making it easier for you to obey. What is meant by the term Christian can only be understood by a daily, prayerful study of the Scriptures. The struggle which the Christian must wage is a lifelong one, for Satan is ever watching for an opportunity to take advantage of every one who claims to follow Christ, that he may ensnare the soul. When a soul is captured from the ranks of Christ the synagogue of Satan sing in hellish triumph. Jesus says, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame and am set down with my Father in his throne.” [Revelation 3:21.] There are many things to be overcome. Every day the Christian must battle with the foe. There is no time to be careless, light, trifling, cheap, and easygoing. There is no time to be foolish [and] pleasure-loving, to be enjoying what is called a good time with young men or young women. He fasted forty days and suffered the keenest pangs of hunger. Christ suffered on our account beyond our comprehension, and we should welcome trial and suffering on our own account for Christ’s sake, that we may overcome as Christ also overcame and be exalted to the throne of our Redeemer. Let us consider the life and suffering of our precious Saviour in our behalf, and remember that if we are not willing to endure trial, toil, and conflict, if we are not willing to be partakers with Christ of His sufferings, we shall be found unworthy of a seat upon His throne.Manuscript Releases, vol. 8 [Nos. 526-663]

Everything that pertains to godliness, everything that pertains to the salvation of the human soul is to be placed within the reach of every human being upon the face of the earth. There is no excuse for one of us why we should falter and fail in any respect in the work of overcoming, for Christ has said, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I overcame, and am set down with my father in his throne.” [Revelation 3:21.] Now He places Himself right upon the scale with humanity. Humanity is to overcome as He overcame. And here is the promise that humanity may become partakers of the divine nature, and that is what Christ came to our earth to do, to open a way that man shall be so united with God, that he shall be partaker of the nature of God, that he shall have the power and the strength which come from God in the work of overcoming.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The worldly-wise man, who meditates and plans and devises, and whose business is ever in his mind, should seek to become wise in matters of eternal interest. If this were the only world we were to have, this intense desire for worldly gain on the part of the professed Christian would not be so inconsistent. If men would put forth a tenth part of their capabilities and energies to secure the heavenly treasure, and that life that measures with the life of God, what good they could do in working in Christ’s lines! Thoughts, efforts, talents, would be put into exercise to prepare their souls to graduate to the school above and hear from the lips of the One who, having overcome all temptations in our behalf, understands the perils of the way. “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame and am set down with my Father in his throne.” [Revelation 3:21.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Christ passed over the ground where Adam fell, overcoming in our behalf. He endured every test that man will ever be called upon to endure. He says, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. As I endured the test and trial, so you may endure it.” [See Luke 9:23.] He who is at last crowned conqueror, must depend, as Christ did, upon Deity. Every step Christ took was taken in full, entire dependence upon God. Had Christ transgressed the law of God in one particular, He would have been a sinner, and His offering would have been a failure, but not upon a single point did the enemy overcome Him. He declares, “Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.] “He that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father on his throne.” [Revelation 3:21.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Parents must talk with them, and teach them from the Word that God has said that children must be brought up in the admonition and the fear of the Lord. Then here is the Word that they are to give to them. They have children to go right into the church with them to be helpers together with them. Then that church that is thus conducted will have members that are reliable. It would be so, but they have forgotten God, that they are amenable to Him. There is to be a reformation all through every household, if you are ready for judgment, if your name is in that book that is sealed, if it is such that will commend your course of action, then Christ will say, “Have a seat on My throne.” He has promised, “To him”—that falls under every temptation that comes?—no—“to him that overcometh,” He says, “They shall sit down with Me upon My throne, even as I also overcame, and am sat down with my Father on His throne.” [Revelation 3:21.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

In order that man might be placed on vantage ground with God, Christ, the only begotten Son of God, made in His express image, came to this world and in the likeness of humanity lived a perfect life. “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] The power that enabled Him to overcome, He has placed at our disposal. In His strength we may be victors in the conquest against evil. He said, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” [Revelation 3:21.]
