The Testimonies and the Reader
CCh 30.4
Perhaps the most crucial test of the true prophet is found in his life, his work, and the influence of his teachings. Christ enunciated this test in Matthew 7:15, 16: “Ye shall know them by their fruits.”Early Writings
Introduction
EW 138.2
In Isaiah 8:19, 20, is a prophecy of the familiar spirits of the present time, and the law is given as a test: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Why say, “If they speak not,” if there was to be no true spiritual manifestation or prophesying at the same time? Jesus says, “Beware of false prophets.... Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:15, 16. This is a part of the Sermon on the Mount, and all can see that this discourse has a general application to the church through the gospel age. False prophets are to be known by their fruits; in other words, by their moral character. The only standard by which to determine whether their fruits are good or bad, is the law of God. Thus we are brought to the law and to the testimony. True prophets will not only speak according to this word, but they will live according to it. One who speaks and lives thus, I dare not condemn.Manuscript Releases, vol. 16 [Nos. 1186-1235]

3SM 341.2
Jesus has raised his voice in warning: “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:15, 16). “Thus saith the Lord of hosts, hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord” (Jeremiah 23:16). “If any man shall say to you, Lo here is Christ, or lo, he is there, believe him not; for false Christs and false prophets shall arise, and shall shew signs and wonders to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. But take ye heed; behold, I have foretold you all things” (Mark 13:21-23).—Letter 6a, 1894.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

These ideas in relation to prophesying, I do not hesitate to say, might better never have been expressed. Such statements prepare the way for a state of things that Satan will surely take advantage of to bring in spurious exercises. There is danger, not only that unbalanced minds will be led into fanaticism, but that designing persons will take advantage of this excitement to further their own selfish purposes. Jesus has raised His voice in warning: “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits.” [Matthew 7:15, 16.] “Thus saith the Lord of hosts, hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you; they make you vain; they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.” [Jeremiah 23:16.] “If any man shall say to you, Lo here is Christ, or lo, he is there, believe him not; for false christs and false prophets shall arise, and shall show signs and wonders to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. From this statement it is evident that it becomes us to be diligent Bible students, that we may know what is according to the law and the testimony. We are safe in no other course of action. Jesus says, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. I arose at half-past two o’clock; I could not sleep; the burden was upon me. The history of the children of Israel urged itself upon my mind, and many points were so clearly pressed upon me that I dared not keep silent. I wrote twenty-three pages between three o’clock and half past twelve o’clock. My spirit was stirred within me. I felt a burden for the people of God, not only on account of this one production, but because of many such matters which are coming to the people, claiming to be messages from God. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20).1MR 363.3
You complain of being treated coldly in Battle Creek. Did you go with a humble spirit to those who are spiritual and say, “Will you examine the Scriptures with me? Shall we pray over this matter? I have not the light, I want it; for error will never sanctify the soul.” Can you be surprised that they would not give you all that confidence you might think they should, after the experience they have passed through? Should not the words of Christ have any weight? “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Matthew 7:15). “Lo here and lo there is Christ,” will be multiplied. Let the believers heed the voice of the angel who has said to the church, “Press together.” In unity is your strength. Love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous. God hath a church, and Christ hath declared, “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). The messengers the Lord sends bear the divine credentials. Bourdeau confessed that after this experience*The first physical phenomena associated with Ellen White’s open visions during the forty years of her ministry constituted convincing evidence to many of her contemporaries that her visions were genuine and not a hoax or a trick of the devil. But neither Mrs. White nor her contemporaries who believed she was a true messenger of God held that these extraordinary manifestations were fundamental tests of her validity as a prophet. They were evidences among other evidences. Since Satan could presumably counterfeit the physical phenomena, there would have to be more basic tests. These tests are defined in the following scriptures: Matthew 7:15-20; Isaiah 8:20; Jeremiah 28:9; 1 John 4:1, 2. Careful students agree that Mrs. White’s life and work measured up to these Biblical standards. he was never again inclined to doubt the divine origin of Mrs. White’s visions. During the European Council soon to follow, Bourdeau’s confidence would be put to a severe test, but it would not be shaken. And it never was.Testimony Treasures, vol. 2

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God, our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever, Amen.” [Jude 20, 21, 24, 25.]Matthew 7:16

In many of the revivals which have occurred during the last half century, the same influences have been at work, to a greater or less degree, that will be manifest in the more extensive movements of the future. There is an emotional excitement, a mingling of the true with the false, that is well adapted to mislead. Yet none need be deceived. In the light of God’s word it is not difficult to determine the nature of these movements. Wherever men neglect the testimony of the Bible, turning away from those plain, soul-testing truths which require self-denial and renunciation of the world, there we may be sure that God’s blessing is not bestowed. We do not hear the noise of His steps, and yet He is walking about us, laboring for our good. Jesus did not seek for notoriety; His life-giving virtue was going out to the needy and the afflicted through silent actions, whose influence extended far into all countries and was felt and expressed in the life of millions of human beings. Those who desire to labor with God have need of His Spirit every day; they need to walk and labor in meekness and humility of spirit, without seeking to accomplish extraordinary things, satisfied to do the work before them and doing it faithfully. Chapter 6—A Warning Against Counterfeit Sanctification
FW 51.2
The Bible is the standard by which to test the claims of all who profess sanctification. Jesus prayed that His disciples might be sanctified through the truth, and He says, “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17); while the psalmist declares, “Thy law is the truth” (Psalm 119:142). All whom God is leading will manifest a high regard for the Scriptures in which His voice is heard. The Bible will be to them “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16). “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16).Maranatha

And by the rule which Christ Himself has given, “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16), it is evident that these movements are not the work of the Spirit of God.39The Great Controversy, 464, 465.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8

All who join themselves to the church but not to the Lord will in time develop their true character. “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:16. The precious fruit of godliness, temperance, patience, kindness, love, and charity, does not appear in their lives. They bear only thorns and briers. God is dishonored before the world by all such professors.... They are, Satan knows, his best working agents while they are unchanged in heart and life, and their works are in such marked contrast to their profession that they are a stumbling block to unbelievers and a great trial to believers....The Great Controversy

What better course to please the enemy and grieve the Spirit of God could be pursued than that which has been pursued by you, my brother, a teacher in Israel. You have had quite a number fully engaged with you in the work, men in responsible positions, presidents of conferences, ministers and workers, that have formed a confederacy to question, to criticize, to say, “Report and we will report it.” [Jeremiah 20:10.] The position these men have occupied, and the influence this position has given them, has caused many to doubt who will never be settled again. The deceptions and delusions of these last days will overcome them, because heaven’s divine illumination is powerless to set them in order for they have decided from the example given them. It makes no difference whether they believe or disbelieve, so if any reproof comes to them which they wish not to believe, they will say, “O, Sr. White is influenced. Some one has told her these things. If Elder Smith, who knows all about the testimonies, says this is only her own opinion and her own judgment, and he does not accept the teachings of the testimonies, and he such a good man, I will follow his example and I will risk it.” This is a very unwise thing to do, yet many are doing this and have done it. I know that the Spirit of the Lord was holding me here in Battle Creek that all might have my evidence whether it was of God or of the devil. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] As in the days of Christ, some have overlooked the very <kind of> evidence God has given them and have said, Show us a sign, work some miracle, if you are right.6LtMs, Lt 40, 1890, par. 14
I have thought these things must make them see and believe, and now I am inclined to think that my earnest effort to have them see and understand has worked in a different way from what I had hoped. I think they have not regarded my words or understood my motives and the more I have done in this line the less influence has my testimony had upon them, and now I feel no inclination to converse with the men who occupy responsible positions. I feel like one who knows that they have been watched, their words misconstrued, their advice and counsel treated as a common affair and unworthy of special notice. I have again had repeated to me, “Spiritual things are spiritually discerned.” I hang my helpless soul on Jesus Christ. I have no desire now to produce one particle of evidence to any one. Those who want to see can open their eyes and see. “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” [Matthew 7:16.] The judgment, now, that any one will pass upon me or my words or my works will not surprise me. I expect anything and lean on no one, depend on no one. My work will not be henceforth to make anyone believe, but go forward, out of the atmosphere of unbelief and caviling and criticism. I have more freedom speaking to unbelievers than to those who hold responsible positions and who have had so great light and great opportunities and have not responded to the light. I have placed my case, as I have never before, in the hands of my Advocate, Jesus Christ, the Righteous. I am sure that I cannot feel at liberty to converse, as I have done, with those to whom I have talked so freely.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

Mr. York is numbered with the church but he is no benefit to the church. His influence has only been an injury to the cause of God. In his business he moves from place to place and everywhere he is known he is a miserable representative of Sabbathkeepers. Those who know him are led to say, “If Sabbathkeepers are like Mr. York and Mr. Davis, I don’t want to be a Sabbathkeeper.” These men talk much in a very boasting, exalted manner in regard to themselves. They can pray and talk in the most important meetings long and earnestly, but it is all a sounding brass and tinkling cymbal. There is no humility there. They are full of self-righteousness and are of that class who will say in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name cast out devils? and in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:22, 23.1LtMs, Ms 3, 1861, par. 25
Mr. York is everywhere introducing the Sabbath, getting into a discussion with unbelievers upon disputed, doctrinal points. His talk sets those with whom he talks farther from the truth. He makes those with whom he talks despise him. He is so boastful, so exalted in his own eyes, and all Sabbathkeepers are judged, by some who are prejudiced, to be like him. He increases prejudice against the truth, for his works and his daily walk are not according to his talk or his profession. He is not an imitator of the holy Pattern. His general course and the course of Mr. Davis are a reproach to the cause of present truth. They talk or say and do not. There are several of this same class in Mill Grove and in surrounding towns. Ye shall know them by their fruits. “Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. In this lesson Christ sought to bring before His disciples the false union with Himself in contrast with the true. Those who have not a living connection with Christ may to outward appearance be in fellowship with Him. Their house may appear to be swept and garnished. Their names may be enrolled on the church books, but they are not members of His body. They do not bear fruit to the glory of God. “By their fruits ye shall know them,” Christ said. [Matthew 7:20.] “Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.14LtMs, Ms 73, 1899, par. 17

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” [Verses 16-23.] We need to study the symbol closely. A profession of piety may connect men and women with the church, but if there is not a vital connection with Christ, they cannot bear good fruit; and this unfruitfulness will in time make their separation as complete as that of the dead branch, which is cast into the fire, and burned.Matthew 7:16-27

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven,”—the will made known in the Ten Commandments, given in Eden when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy, and spoken with an audible voice from Sinai—“Many will say unto me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name, and in thy name have cast out devils, and in thy name done many wonderful works? You may have a theory of truth, and yet have no special fellowship with Christ. It is essential that we be sanctified through the truth. Christ prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] Men may give sermons in special order, and yet not be sanctified through the truth. Those who are sanctified through the truth speak under the inspiration of the Spirit. Thus Christ taught, and the people said of Him, “Never man spake like this man.” [John 7:46.] They were astonished at His doctrine, “for he taught as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” [Matthew 7:29.] When men are baptized by the Holy Spirit, they put on the robes of Christ’s righteousness. They take their place at His feet, to learn of Him.14LtMs, Ms 94, 1899, par. 18

He plainly declares that all who would be His disciples must bring forth fruit; and then He shows how they may become fruitful branches. “Abide in me, and I in you. They nominally accepted the truth, but the sanctifying leaven was not hidden in the heart, and old practices and customs soon bore sway. It never will work. Satan will work. He is working upon human minds by his crooked principles. These will be adopted and acted upon by those who claim to be loyal and true to God’s government. How shall we know that they are untrue, disloyal? “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.]11LtMs, Ms 57, 1896, par. 15
God sees that the same course of action is being pursued the world over. Men and women come to the place where the road diverges: it is either right or wrong. Thousands upon thousands clothe themselves in what they suppose to be an impenetrable disguise, and choose the wrong. To make their course plain to others by abrupt disclosures would only cause a larger number to choose the side of wrong. Thus the wrong doers would be sustained and many souls would be ruined. God does not force any one. He leaves all free to choose. But He says, “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Verse 20.] The Lord will not write as wise those who cannot distinguish between a tree that bears thorn berries, and a tree that bears olives.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

The two great powers in controversy are working, one from beneath, the other from above. Every man is under the secret influence of the one or the other, and his acts will reveal the character of the inspiration from which they proceed. Those who are united with Christ will work always in Christ’s lines. Those who are in union with Satan will work under the inspiration of their leader, opposed to the Holy Spirit’s power and action. The will of men is left free to act, and by action is revealed what spirit is moving upon the heart. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

How the Adelaide church could listen to such wicked things is a mystery, a complete mystery to me. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] I am willing to be judged by the fruits of my labor. But every one of these statements, professing to be so wonderfully wise, in regard to my work—which is not mine, but the work the Lord has given me—he must confront again. I ask, Who hath bewitched them, to make such terrible, lying statements? Did they have any grounds for doing this? Not any. Why did they do this? Because I have told them that which was the truth. And this is called the work of the inspiration of the Spirit of God. Ezekiel 33:6-16 and 20.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

The doctrines must be plainly understood. The men accepted to teach the truth must be anchored; then their vessel will hold against storm and tempest, because the anchor holds them firmly. The deceptions will increase, and we are to call rebellion by its right name. We are to stand with the whole armor on. My brethren, you are not meeting men only, but principalities and powers. We wrestle not against flesh and blood, (Let Ephesians 6:10-18 be read carefully and impressively before the church). These men are voicing the words of the dragon. We have to meet the satanic agencies who went to make war with the saints. “The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” [Revelation 12:17.] These men who have apostatized leave the true and faithful people of God, and fraternize with those who represent Barabbas. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

Each day the character of the man for that day is being imprinted upon the books of heaven. Those in responsible positions are called upon to be faithful sentinels, to stand on guard in our families, in our churches and in our schools. There will be erring ones to be dealt with, and while they must be dealt with in love, yet they must be instructed and corrected with firmness and earnestness. It will be necessary for every soul and who loves God to stand firmly, in union with these who are on the side of God, instead of taking their place on the side of the wrong-doer. In the great work that is going forward in these last days, we would ask, who is on the Lord’s side, working the works of God? The Word of God presents the fact to the human family, that life is a conflict, a warfare. In the great controversy there is a right side and a wrong side, and we individually stand under the banner that represents the opposing forces. Whose side are we on? There is a vast army standing under the black banner of the prince of darkness, and there is another army standing under the blood-stained banner of the Prince of life. How shall we discern between the soldiers of Christ and the soldiers of the enemy? “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] The words, the actions, make manifest what are the principles which control the life. These who are on the Lord’s side are continually exerting their influence to build up the interest of Christ’s kingdom. They represent Christ in words and character, and make manifest the fact that they are under the Captain of the Lord’s host. Their names stand registered on the books of life as being on the Lord’s side.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

There is a practical test prescribed for us by One who knows. “By their fruits,” He says, “ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] The whole course of the providence of God is traced in the Book of books for our study. “The eyes of all wait upon Thee: thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest their hand, and satisfieth the desire of every living thing.” [Psalm 145:15, 16.] The Lord has entrusted His talents in the hands of His church, that through its multiplied blessings, the grace of God may be communicated to those who know Him not. God’s people are to work in winning souls to Christ. A belief of the truth is not enough. There must be no burying of even the one talent. That talent is to be used in winning souls to Christ. One soul labored for and converted will bring the talents he possesses to be used to advance the work of God in our world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The only evidence of true conversion that we can give to the world is a well-ordered life, and a godly conversation. “By their fruit,” said Christ, “ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] We are required to give ourselves to the Lord first, then we are to work earnestly according to His will. What service, I ask, will be most acceptable to God? What enterprise dearest to the heart of Infinite Love? What will meet with the approbation of heaven? Christ has made an infinite sacrifice that the world might be sanctified through the truth. In co-operating with Christ, speaking the truth in love, we may win souls to Him. Stand in your Saviour. Be gentle, be kind, be tender and compassionate. An abundance of the opposite attributes, which originate with Satan, have been manifested. This has made a record in heaven that none of those who are guilty will care to meet. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] How selfish has been the spirit of some who have served in the office of publication. Sharp, criticizing, unjust dealing has marked their course. The hearts of some connected with the work became so imbued with the attributes of Satan that they had no vital interest in the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world. Their souls were palsied by self-sufficiency and superiority. They were so disabled by the sting of the serpent that they were incapable of appropriating the bread which comes down from heaven. They did not put into every line of the work a divine life that has been provided for them at infinite cost.Manuscript Releases, vol. 12 [Nos. 921-999]

All this passed through my mind like a flash of lightning and I was sensible how little trust or dependence could be put in the friendship of men when human thoughts and human passions bear sway. Just as sure as the enemy is permitted to bear sway then we may expect anything. Human friendship, bonds, and ties of relationship are severed, and why? Because there is a difference of opinion in interpretation of the Scriptures. It is the same spirit which condemned the Lord of life and glory. The truth that sanctifies the soul produces no briers and thorns. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20). Then the words were spoken, “Only lay hold of the strength of the Mighty One. He is a friend that will never leave thee, never betray thee. He is thy refuge. No storm or tempest can move thee. In God is thy strength. Faith in God is thy shield and buckler. It is God’s plan to work through His instrumentalities, His chosen earthen vessels, and men are honored when He places them as His appointed messengers. The work of preaching the Word, presenting Christ crucified as the world’s Redeemer, bears the divine credentials, and proof of its sacred character is given in the conversion of souls. It is not the large buildings erected for show that give character to the work, but the winning of souls to Christ. This seals the teacher as a living oracle, as Christ’s apostle. It is a sad fact that not all the men who have come from America as workers have been a help and blessing in South Africa. They were not living in connection with God. This has cost South Africa much. There are those who have not exercised wisdom in dealing with human minds, who have been too indifferent to reach out a hand warm with sympathy and earnest, intelligent love to help the ones Satan has tried to secure for his service. Circumstances consign every man, whatever his position, to a practical test; and the actual results of this test are offered to the world for inspection. “By their fruits,” Christ said, “ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Ever since then I have labored with pen and voice. Increased light has come to me as I have imparted the light given me. I have very much more light on the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which I shall present to our people if my way is not blocked by such influences as the influence exerted by Fannie Bolton. Such a work as hers calls for my pen and voice to contradict her statements, in order to save poor souls from being entirely swamped by her assertion that she has received the Holy Ghost. Victory is assured through faith and obedience. Let us make an application of the words of Christ to our own individual cases. Are we poor, and blind, and wretched, and miserable? Then let us seek the gold and white raiment that He offers. The work of overcoming is not restricted to the age of the martyrs. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20), the Saviour declared. All the true followers of Christ bear fruit to His glory. Their lives testify that a good work has been wrought in them by the Spirit of God, and their fruit is unto holiness. Their lives are elevated and pure. Right actions are the unmistakable fruit of true godliness, and those who bear no fruit of this kind reveal that they have no experience in the things of God. They are not in the Vine. Said Jesus, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing.” John 15:4, 5.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

We can estimate the influence that advanced truth and increased light have on us by the work that we do. “By their fruits,” Christ declares, “ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] Our words, our works, are the fruit we bear. There is too much selfish love among us. If there is a brother who encourages all we do and suggest as right, then we esteem that brother above others. If there is another whom we imagine does not look with favor on our way of doing things, we withdraw from that one and seek to demerit his work. The Holy Spirit is grieved with such a selfish religion as this; and unless it is realized and put away, a spirit of prejudice and alienation will mar the work of God. God is dishonored when His people do not “love as brethren” [1 Peter 3:8], when the pattern is not correctly represented. We are not all required to do exactly alike in the work. Each has his individual work to do. Spiritual life will lead to unity. We are in the world for work—earnest, spiritual work. But one man is not given the same work that is given to another. If a worker does not follow the plan of work that another thinks is right, this should not cause difference and alienation. The manner of accomplishing the work may not be precisely the way in which another would do it, but if the labor is conscientiously performed, God accepts the effort. God asks for the performance of good works, and the results of the efforts made will testify to the virtue of the worker. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

It would be surprising if there were not some, who, not being well-balanced in mind, have spoken and acted indiscreetly; for whenever and wherever the Lord works in giving a genuine blessing, a counterfeit is also revealed, in order to make of none effect the true work of God. Therefore we need to be exceedingly careful, and walk humbly before God, that we may have spiritual eyesalve that we may distinguish the working of the Holy Spirit of God from the working of that spirit that would bring in wild license and fanaticism. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20). We have to meet the satanic agencies who went to make war with the saints. “The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 12:17). Those who apostatize leave the true and faithful people of God, and fraternize with those who represent Barabbas. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20).Selected Messages Book 3

No Self-vindication—My heart feels very sad that Brethren J and K have taken the position which they have.... You may inquire, “What effect does this have upon you?” Sorrow only, sorrow of soul, but peace and perfect rest and trust in Jesus. To vindicate myself, my position, or my mission, I would not utter ten words. I would not seek to give evidence of my work. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20).—Letter 14, 1897.Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students

I am the Vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing.” John 15:4, 5.The Acts of the Apostles

The lesson applies to believers in every age. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:20. The inward adorning of a meek and quiet spirit is priceless. In the life of the true Christian the outward adorning is always in harmony with the inward peace and holiness. “If any man will come after Me,” Christ said, “let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24. Self-denial and sacrifice will mark the Christian’s life. Evidence that the taste is converted will be seen in the dress of all who walk in the path cast up for the ransomed of the Lord. The Upward Look

Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? Never let the world say that worldlings and Christ’s followers are alike in their tastes and pursuits; for God has drawn a line between His people and the world. This line of demarcation is broad and deep and clear; it is not so blended with the world that it is not discernible. “The Lord knoweth them that are his” (2 Timothy 2:19). “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20).The Ellen G. His grace is sufficient for thee.”True Revival

It would be surprising if there were not some, who, not being well-balanced in mind, have spoken and acted indiscreetly; for whenever and wherever the Lord works in giving a genuine blessing, a counterfeit is also revealed, in order to make of none effect the true work of God. Therefore we need to be exceedingly careful, and walk humbly before God, that we may have spiritual eye-salve that we may distinguish the working of the Holy Spirit of God from the working of that spirit that would bring in wild license and fanaticism. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20). Those who are really beholding Christ will be changed into His image, even by the Spirit of the Lord, and will grow up to the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus. The Holy Spirit of God will inspire men with love and purity; and refinement will be manifest in their characters. From the Heart

Here in Marquette there was a great mistake made upon this point. Some, I was shown, could receive the published testimony readily, judging of the tree by its fruits. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] Others are like doubting Thomas, they cannot believe the published testimonies or receive evidence through the testimonies of others, but must see and have the evidence for themselves. Such must not be thrust aside, but long patience, kindly forbearance, and brotherly love should be exercised toward them until they find their position and become established for or against. If they fight against the visions of which they have no knowledge, and souls are endangered through their influence, then it is soon enough to take up labor against such, that the weak be not led astray or corrupted through their influence.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 1 (1844 - 1868)

And if we fail to take the work He gives us, we neglect the very opportunities which we need to give us a valuable experience and bring us in close sympathy with Jesus Christ. Selfishness will not dwell in the heart of a Christian. Wherever self-love and selfishness reign, Christ is not. Let none continue to transgress, flattering themselves that their way is as good as God’s way. This was what Satan suggested to Eve in Eden. By this means he caused the fall of man, and he is still urging the same deception. There are very many in the churches who are deceiving their own souls. They reach a standard of their own creating. They think that religion consists in going to church to hear sermons and to have a good, happy feeling. If their emotions are stirred, and a few tears are shed, this is positive evidence to them that they are Christians. Upon these feelings, and a general belief that Jesus is the Saviour of the world, they base their hope of salvation. They do not comprehend that if they ever reach heaven it must be by daily self-denial and conflict. Many whose names are on the church books know no more about practical godliness than the veriest sinner. This fair-weather Christianity will not do in the time towards which we are rushing. Under the sun of scorching trial, all such will be found withered away. A new life is taking possession of Satan’s agencies. The test of temptation will reveal whether we are truly the sons and daughters of God. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] And the trials here will not be so severe as that of the final judgment. It is not best to meet the Lord unprepared and to find that all our superficial goodness weighs nothing with Him.Gospel Workers (1892/1893 ed.)

The Lord has opened before you your wrong toward His children; your want of mercy and love, your determination to control minds and make them see things just as you see them. And when light came to you, what course did you take? Did you merely admit that you were wrong, or did you heartily confess your error, and humble your proud hearts before God? Did you cast aside your ways, and accept God’s teachings? Did you go to the very ones you had bruised and wounded, and say, “I have been wrong; I have sinned against you. Forgive me. I have failed; I have worked in my own spirit. I had a zeal but not according to knowledge. It was the spirit of Jehu, rather than the meekness and lowliness of Christ. I cast no slur upon genuine sanctification, but as Christ has given us the responsibility, in a degree, of distinguishing the true sanctification from the false, saying, “By their fruits ye shall know them” [Matthew 7:20], we will not be unjust in calling your attention to the fruits borne. Although I may be followed from place to place by this man with his malicious falsehoods, his malice, I shall do my part of the work as God opens the way. If he turns away the people by his deceptions and falsehoods and perverting of the Scriptures, that is not my sin. Every day the record is passing up to heaven of the bold, blasphemous words this man has presumed to utter against the law of God, the foundation of His government in all heaven and earth. Every utterance is registered in the books of heaven, and the result of these words he will meet again just as surely as the chief priests, scribes, and Pharisees will meet all the words uttered against Jesus Christ. We are leaving impressions upon those around us either for good or for evil; we are directing the current of their thoughts into a heavenly channel, or in an earthly direction. Indeed, you had an opportunity to test the work God had given me. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] You were convicted. Your doubts and unbelief were disappearing. Faith was taking the place of doubts. The enemy, an ever-vigilant foe, was watching his agents who were also ready to do his bidding—were at work. We are near the close of probation when every case is to pass in review before God. Now, in probation, is the time God has given us for the formation of pure and holy characters. If this time is not improved, if the thoughts are impure, if the heart is not sanctified, if unholy practices are indulged, be sure that the portion of all will be with the unholy, the debased, the abominable. It is now in probationary time that every soul must make his choice. This choice will be seen in the family, will be seen in the association with the church. Virtue and true unselfish principle will bring its own reward, for it will be reproduced in others. If I should say these words of myself, how many would say, “Sister White has a hard spirit; she does not understand me.” But God understands you, and He plainly says that if you have envying and strife, you need not glory, calling it a Christian boldness, for it is not of God, but of the devil. Although you profess to believe the truth, your judgment may assent to the truth, but if you have not the truth as it is in Jesus, you cannot present it, only in your way, with your manner; and your very words and appearance show that you have not brought the truth into your life and woven it into your character, but tied the truth unto the tree that bears thorn berries. “This wisdom descendeth not from above. ... But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable.” I want you all to mark the fruits here stated, “easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” [Verses 15, 17.] Are there any of the church who are not easy to be entreated? who will argue for their own way? who will, in self-confidence, hold to their own ideas, and will not give them up, but will talk as though they were the only ones whose ways were perfect and unquestionable? These are not easily entreated because they are not converted. They are not divested of self. They are full of self-esteem and are sure to disgust unbelievers with their words and ways, in talking the objectionable features of our faith, in all proud boasting and self-confidence. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] “And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.” [James 3:18.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

Do you work the works of God? Are you Christlike? Blessed is the man who draweth not back but believeth every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Let there be no standing still, <no> drawing back unto perdition. The Lord commands His people to go forward from light to a greater light. Some have had great light, they have been blessed, they have believed that God, for Christ’s sake, forgave their sins, but there they have stopped and have made no further advancement. They have not attained unto a greater faith or broader experience, because they have not received the light of the truth which is constantly unfolding to those who follow the Light of the world. The blood of Christ cleanseth from all unrighteousness, but just as soon as a soul ceases to walk by faith, he becomes enshrouded in darkness. The only safety for anyone is to advance, to increase in the knowledge of the truth, to be sanctified by it. Those who are content with preaching old discourses and praying stereotyped prayers fail to improve the talents that God has given them, and these talents will be taken from them. Just as sure as the enemy is permitted to bear sway, then we may expect anything. Human friendship, bonds, and ties of relationship are severed, and why? Because there is a difference of opinion in interpretation of the Scriptures. It is the same spirit which condemned the Lord of life and glory. The truth that sanctifies the souls produces no briers and thorns. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] Then the words were spoken, “Only lay hold of the strength of the Mighty One. He is a friend that will never leave thee, never betray thee, and He is thy refuge. No storm or tempest can move thee. In God is thy strength. Faith in God is thy shield and buckler. His grace is sufficient for thee.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

What reserve power has the Lord with which to reach those who have cast aside His warnings and reproofs and have accredited the testimonies of the Spirit of God to no higher source than human wisdom? In the judgment, what can you who have done this offer to God as an excuse for turning from the evidences He has given you that God was in the work? “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] I would not rehearse before you the evidences given in the past two years of the dealings of God by His chosen servants; but the present evidence of His working is revealed to you, and you are now under obligation to believe. You cannot neglect God’s messages of warning, you cannot reject them or treat them lightly, but at the peril of infinite loss. Caviling, ridicule, and misrepresentation can be indulged in only at the expense of the debasement of your own souls. The use of such weapons does not gain precious victories for you, but rather cheapens the mind, and separates the soul from God. Sacred things are brought down to the level of the common, and a condition of things is created that pleases the prince of darkness, and grieves away the Spirit of God. Caviling and criticism leaves the soul as devoid of the dew of grace as the hills of Gilboa were destitute of rain. Confidence cannot be placed in the judgment of those who indulge in ridicule and misrepresentation. No weight can be attached to their advice or resolutions. You must bear the divine credentials before you make decided movements to shape the working of God’s cause.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

Can it be possible that men of sensible, critical minds will be so credulous as to receive the sayings of men and their suppositions, gather up reports and place so great confidence in imaginings, and withstand all the evidence that God has been pleased to give them, at and ever since the Minneapolis meeting, to confirm their faith in the testimonies on Bible grounds, applying the test Christ has given them—‘By their fruits ye shall know them;’ a corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit, neither can a good tree bring forth corrupt fruit [Matthew 7:20]—and yet know not in regard to the testimonies, whether they are of heaven or hell?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

Let them review this chapter in their experience. For more than half a century God has been giving His people light through the testimonies of His Spirit. After all this time is it left for two men and their wives to undeceive the whole church of believers, declaring Mrs. White a fraud and a deceiver? “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20).9MR 362.2
The doctrines must be plainly understood. The men accepted to teach the truth must be anchored; then their vessel will hold against storm and tempest, because the anchor holds them firmly. The deceptions will increase and we are to call rebellion by its right name. We are to stand with the whole armor on. My brethren, you are not meeting men only, but principalities and powers. We wrestle not against flesh and blood. (Let Ephesians 6:10-18 be read carefully and impressively before the church.) These men are voicing the words of the dragon. We have to meet the satanic agencies who went to make war with the saints. “The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 12:17). These men who have apostatized leave the true and faithful people of God, and fraternize with those who represent Barabbas. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

The fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] Solomon testifies: “The tongue of the just is as choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth.” Proverbs 10:20. Those who are one with Christ cannot enjoy listening to trifling conversation; much less will they engage in it themselves. If the heart is spiritual, there will be spiritual conversation; for “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.” Matthew 12:34. In our words and actions our thoughts will be revealed, just as they are. The life is a true unfurling of the banner, testifying what is in the heart.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

In Satan’s masterly working with the human mind, his true character is scarcely discerned, for he clothes himself as an angel of light. But his suggestions, if followed, result in bearing fruit of a very dangerous quality. Its appearance, to the finite judgment, is flattering as a higher form of good; but it is the deceiving power of the enemy, the working of the mystery of iniquity. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.]7LtMs, Ms 25a, 1891, par. 30
The Lord wants men at the head of His work who will not be bribed or forced. When the army of Gideon was <divided,> it was those only who were intent on the one great object before them, that could go to the battle and triumph with Gideon. Those who do not feel that they can do this, should not be held to their positions. It is no cause for wonder that there will be connected with our institutions and work those who are unworthy. But these are to be tested and proved. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] I have seen that there has been, and will continue to be, those among our workers who do not feel their need of Jesus at every step. They think they cannot take time to pray and attend meetings. They have so much to do they cannot find time to keep their souls in the love of God. When this is the case, Satan is on the ground to supply the vacuum and create <vain> imaginations. Thus the soul is led to plan and devise without the Master Worker.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

When a new view is presented, the question is often asked, “Who are its advocates? What is the position or influence of the one who would teach us, who have been students of the Bible for many years?” God will send His words of warning by whom He will send. And the question to be settled is not what person is it who brings the message; this does not in any way affect the word spoken. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

The branch has a living union with the living vine, and as such the words of Paul are appropriate, “Who shall separate us from the love of God, in Christ Jesus?” [Romans 8:35, 39.] Shall affliction, storm, tempest, persecution, life, or death? Paul says, No, nothing shall be able to do this. The branch derives all its fruit-bearing qualities from the parent stock. The branches do not sustain the vine, but the vine sustains the branches. “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit.” [John 15:8.] Here is the test, the criterion before the world that we are branches of the True Vine. Our profession alone is no proof. The only real proof that we bear to the world that we are Christians is the quality of fruit which we bear. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] Heavenly intelligences never make a mistake.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

By a godly example, those who occupy responsible positions can maintain the elevated character of the office. Not to do this is to incur guilt, to be unfaithful stewards, blameworthy before the heavenly intelligences who are waiting to co-operate with the human agencies in order to save souls. Christians are to shine as lights amid the moral darkness of the world. They are to be representatives of Christ, patterns for all who come within the sphere of their influence. They are exhorted to fidelity, and to the highest attainments of piety. The Word of God is plain upon this point. “Do all things without murmurings and disputings, that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; holding forth the word of life.” [Philippians 2:14-16.] In our own lives we should present to the world an illustration of the holy character of the truth which we profess to believe. This has not been done by many who are connected with the office. An indolent man occupying a position of trust in our institutions will make upon many minds an impression unfavorable to the truth; “by their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] The lights of the world are so to shine that men, by seeing their good works, may be led to glorify our Father who is in heaven. How terrible it is for any who hear His name to give to the world, through a defective character, a distorted image of Christ. If not, it is of another spirit. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] I know that the Lord is in this work, and no one can silence the messenger whom God sends, or repress the message. The Lord will be heard through His human agencies. And if any man refuses to accept the light and walk in it, that light will not continue to shine upon him. “I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. In associating with the careless and reckless, it is an easy matter to come to view things as they do, and to lose all sense of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Why justify yourself? “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] But we do hope most sincerely that you will not succeed in deceiving others by your smooth words and false pretenses. The words we utter decide the character of the treasure in our heart. New fields are to be entered, and if the work advances into these new fields, then every one who loves Jesus will have to act a part in personal self-denial. The work cannot be done by a few bearing the burden, and others have no experience in burden-bearing, and yet all partaker of the favor of God. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] If everyone had a Christian experience after the self-denying order that Christ has enjoined, we should see far less selfish indulgence, we should see men and women giving themselves to the Lord and working in their positions of trust as the Lord would have them, practicing the self-denial and self-sacrifice which we see in our Redeemer. “Lo here and lo there is Christ” will be multiplied. I have tender feelings toward you, but come to the light, I beseech of you.—Letter 16, 1893.
