Here in Malachi we read, “Then they that feared the Lord spoke often one to another, and the Lord hearkened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the Lord and that thought upon His name.” [Chapter 3:16.] It is represented as God’s hearkening to their testimonies; and although you have no minister standing in the desk talking to you, yet you have angels of God that will minister unto you. And as you talk of the blessed hope and of the home in heaven, angels are right by your side. Why, we have enough in this hope to give us life and courage if we will only draw nearer to God.4LtMs, Ms 10, 1886, par. 19
The eye of God is upon these scattered ones; and if there are only two or three of you together, the promise is: Where two or three are met together in My name, there am I in the midst of them. [Matthew 18:20.] And what does the Lord say in regard to these little companies? Why, He says, “They shall be Mine in that day when I make up My jewels, and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” [Malachi 3:17.] Now every one of us who will try to bring a healthful, reviving influence into the church by their works will be remembered in heaven, and He will give them a reward just as much as to the minister who stands in the desk. They are doing their work with fidelity, and they have a sense of the responsibility that rests upon them that they must labor for one another. Our High Calling

Let all remember that ... angels are recording in the book of remembrance every word that vindicates the character and mission of Christ. I tried to present before them that to be a Christian means service, earnest work for the Master. There must be no idlers in His vineyard. The church must be co-laborers with Jesus Christ. Then the church will be a living church. Their light will be well borne and will shine. Everyone must bear his share of responsibility. They have heard much preaching, and when there shall be no minister they need not feel that they must have someone preach. They may select one of their number to preach. Let everyone have something to say for Jesus Christ and have in mind the words in (Malachi 3:16, 17), “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. Those that were assembled have love for God in their hearts, but the work of faith must go deeper. You are inclined to indulge in lightness and frivolity, and this is not in harmony with the holy character of truth. God has entrusted His people with the last message of mercy that is to be given to the world. You should seek most earnestly for a deeper experience and piety, and learn to walk circumspectly. “They that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. God has given us reason to be used for a noble purpose. We are here as probationers for the next life. It is too solemn a period for any of us to be careless or to move in uncertainty. Our intercourse with others should be characterized by sobriety and heavenly-mindedness. Our conversation should be upon heavenly things. “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon His name. I tried to lead these dear souls to have sense of their responsibility as light bearers to the world. We encouraged all to feel that individually they had a part to act in every meeting when assembled to worship God. The Lord has given us rich promises. “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord harkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” [Malachi 3:16, 17.] All but one of the company testified for the Lord, giving evidence of the power of truth on the human heart. We felt that the meeting was a success because of the presence of Jesus. All seemed cheered and comforted and blest. We then rode eight miles to our home in Granville, and as the horse climbed the hilly road, we ate our lunch with cheerfulness and gladness of heart.Malachi 3:16-18

In Malachi 3:16 an opposite class is brought to view, a class that meet together, not to find fault with God, but to speak of His glory and tell of His mercies. These have been faithful in their duty. They have given to the Lord His own. Testimonies are borne by them that make the heavenly angels sing and rejoice. These have no complaints to make against God. Those who walk in the light, who are faithful and true in doing their duty, are not heard complaining and finding fault. They speak words of courage, hope, and faith. It is those who serve themselves, who do not give God His own, that complain.6T 390.2

By special invitation we left Basel February 4, accompanied by Bro. and Sr. Ings and our interpreter, Bro. John Vuilleumier. Friday night we had a meeting with the church in the new chapel. Sabbath, in the forenoon, Bro. Ings spoke to the people with much freedom, and all seemed to be deeply interested and profited. I spoke in the afternoon, from Malachi 3:16-18. The Spirit of the Lord moved upon hearts. After the discourse we had a social meeting, and many excellent testimonies were borne. One young man had not taken any part in the meetings for more than a year. He had been overcome through temptations, and fallen under discouragement. He made humble confessions, with weeping, and there made a decided stand to be wholly for the Lord, and expressed his determination to do all in his power to help others. His mother had never before taken part in social meeting, but she bore her testimony, and several others confessed and wept before the Lord. We all felt the deep movings of the Spirit of the Lord in our midst. The Lord was at work softening and subduing hearts. Bro. G. made very interesting remarks, which Bro. John Vuilleumier interpreted to me. He said he had for years been praying for his brother, who lived some miles away, that the Lord would draw him by the cords of his love, and that he might take hold of the truth. During the week of prayer Bro. G. made this case of his brother’s a special subject of prayer. He went to visit him, to see if he could not say or do something to help him to walk in the light. He found that his brother had been deeply convicted. He stated that while engaged in work upon the Sabbath his tools seemed so heavy that he could scarcely hold them in his hands. It seemed that he must drop them, and keep the Sabbath. He read the tract, “Sufferings of Christ,” which had been translated into French, and that decided him to obey his convictions of conscience and keep the Sabbath. Expecting to receive his discharge, he told his employers that he could not work another Sabbath; but he was told to continue his work. Bro. G. was filled with joy and gratitude to God that his prayers were answered. He stated there were others, also, who were convicted, one a man of influence.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 2 (1869 - 1875)

I spoke again to the people assembled in conference from (Malachi 3:16)—“Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another,” etc. I dwelt upon the importance of making our social meetings interesting; that one man wasn’t to do all the talking, but every one should bear his testimony. It has been the habit of one man to get up and talk from one-half hour to an hour. This is called meditation. Then the interest of the meeting is gone, and no one feels that he has any testimony to bear. One or two make a few remarks, and the meetings close, and there has not been the habit of having social meetings in Europe. But we are seeking to educate them on this point, that it is the duty of every one who loves God and the truth to speak to one another words of experience and of comfort, and to tell of God’s goodness, His love, and His great mercy in giving His Son Jesus Christ to die for us while we were enemies to God.Malachi 3:17

If the blood of Christ’s faithful witnesses were shed at this time, it would not, like the blood of the martyrs, be as seed sown to yield a harvest for God. Their fidelity would not be a testimony to convince others of the truth; for the obdurate heart has beaten back the waves of mercy until they return no more. If the righteous were now left to fall a prey to their enemies, it would be a triumph for the prince of darkness. Says the psalmist: “In the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me.” Psalm 27:5. Christ has spoken: “Come, My people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For, behold, the Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.” Isaiah 26:20, 21. Chapter 9—The Pearl
COL 118.2
The parable of the merchantman seeking goodly pearls has a double significance: it applies not only to men as seeking the kingdom of heaven, but to Christ as seeking His lost inheritance. Christ, the heavenly merchantman seeking goodly pearls, saw in lost humanity the pearl of price. In man, defiled and ruined by sin, He saw the possibilities of redemption. Hearts that have been the battleground of the conflict with Satan, and that have been rescued by the power of love, are more precious to the Redeemer than are those who have never fallen. God looked upon humanity, not as vile and worthless; He looked upon it in Christ, saw it as it might become through redeeming love. He collected all the riches of the universe, and laid them down in order to buy the pearl. And Jesus, having found it, resets it in His own diadem. “For they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon His land.” Zechariah 9:16. “They shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels.” Malachi 3:17.The Upward Look

We received your letter last Thursday, which was yesterday. We thank you for writing so fully as you have done in regard to Byron Belden. We were shocked to hear of his death. We had no intimation that his lungs were any affected. I had strong hope that Byron would make a man of usefulness. His perceptives were large, his organs of order and system were large. He was not forward and obtrusive. He understood his place, and kept it. His benevolence was largely developed. He had kindness, sympathy, and pity in a large degree. He would divide his clothing and his food even if he knew not where his next supply would come from. Whatever he set his hand to was done with diligence and whole-heartedness. Faithful in that which was least made him faithful in larger responsibilities. He was beloved by all who were acquainted with him, and we shall all miss him. [He was] always willing to do anything that needed to be done. We look upon him as among the precious ones who sleep in Jesus. “And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels. The looker-on may discern no difference, but there is One who said that the tares were not to be plucked up by human hands, lest the wheat be rooted up also. Let both grow together until the harvest. Then the Lord sends forth His reapers to gather out the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn, while the wheat is gathered into the heavenly garner. The time of the judgment is a most solemn period, when the Lord gathers His own from among the tares. Those who have been members of the same family are separated. Thus we are to serve God. He only serves who acts up to the highest standard of obedience. All who would be sons and daughters of God must prove themselves co-workers with God and Christ and the heavenly angels. This is the test for every soul. Of those who faithfully serve Him the Lord says, “They shall be Mine... in that day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” Malachi 3:17.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Of Christ it is said, “Though he were a son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.” [Hebrews 5:8.] All who would be sons and daughters of God must prove themselves workers in the great firm with God and Christ and the heavenly intelligences. This is the test for every soul. Will we prove our submission and obedience? Only those who bear the test will be given work in the garden of God. In every respect you are to honor God by being partakers of His divine nature, that you may have the assurance of sins pardoned, which would testify of the love of God. But there is not in our experience that pleasantness and joyousness that there should be. Christ says that if He is in us, our joy will be full. Let us then be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Let us not, by living inconsistent, earthly, sensual lives, heap reproach upon Christ. Let us rise above the malarious atmosphere that pervades the world and breathe the breath of God. Let us feed upon the bread of life. Christ declares that if we eat His flesh and drink His blood, we shall have eternal life. His Word will be to us as the leaves of the tree of life if we will believe in Christ as our personal Saviour. If we eat the bread that came down from heaven, we shall have a life connection with God. We shall bring eternity into our reckoning. We shall live as in the presence of the whole heavenly host. The angels are watching and guarding us. God loves us, but we fail to cherish that love. We are losing in spirituality. God wants us to recognize His ownership in every human being. He has His claims. “They are mine,” [See Malachi 3:17.] He says. I have bought them with a price. “Ye are not your own. ... therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Will you do this? Will you pray in faith? Will you honor Christ by taking Him at His word?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Every act of justice, mercy, and benevolence makes melody in heaven. The Father from His throne beholds those who do these acts of mercy and numbers them with His most precious treasures. “And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels” (Malachi 3:17). Every merciful act to the needy, the suffering, is regarded as though done to Jesus. Our only safety is in refusing to follow any one in a questionable course. Stand firmly for the right. When the Lord makes up His jewels the contrast between the righteous and the wicked will be decidedly marked. “Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.” [Malachi 3:18.] Then murmurers and accusers, those who are envious and jealous, will be found standing on their own side, with Satan and his angels.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

What, shall any Seventh-day Adventist relax his devotedness when all his capabilities and powers should be placed on the Lord’s side, when an unflinching testimony, noble, and uplifting, should come from his lips, “Therefore, I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold”? [Verse 127.] When the law of God is most derided, and brought into the most contempt, then it is time for every true follower of Christ, for those whose hearts have been given to God, and who are fixed to obey Him, to stand unflinchingly for the faith once delivered to the saints. “Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.” [Malachi 3:18.] It is time to fight when champions are most needed.Darkness Before Dawn

The longstanding Millerite pre-1844-disappointment belief on the shut door originated with William Miller. He first published his view in the seventh lecture of his 1836 Evidence From Scripture. He referenced the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25 and the close of probation language in Revelation 22:11.2William Miller, Evidence From Scripture and History of the Second Coming of Christ About the Year 1843 (Troy, N.Y.: Kemble & Hooper, 1836), pp. 97, 98. In October, soon after Miller accepted the autumn 1844 date for the fulfillment of the 2300 days, he concluded that probation had already closed.3William Miller, “Brother Miller’s Letter, on the Seventh Month,” Midnight Cry, Oct. 12, 1844, p. 122; idem, “Letter From William Miller,” Advent Herald, Nov. 27, 1844, p. 127. Until early in 1845 he continued to believe that “God in His providence has shut the door; we can only stir one another up to be patient. … We are living in the time specified by Malachi 3:18, also Daniel 12:10, and Revelation 22:10-13.”4William Miller, “Letter From Bro. Miller,” Advent Herald, Dec. 11, 1844, p. 142; see also idem, “Letter From Mr. Miller,” Advent Herald, Feb. 12, 1845, pp. 2, 3. The last text, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still” (verse 11), is a clear reference to the close of probation. Miller held to this view much longer than his closest associate and publicist, Joshua V. Himes. Miller’s position undoubtedly gave strength to the shut-door movement and contributed to the schism that developed among Millerites.Homeward Bound
God’s Law and Sabbath Vindicated, June 30
HB 203.3
It is impossible to describe the horror and despair of those who have trampled upon God’s holy requirements. The Lord gave them His law; they might have compared their characters with it and learned their defects while there was yet opportunity for repentance and reform; but in order to secure the favor of the world, they set aside its precepts and taught others to transgress. They have endeavored to compel God’s people to profane His Sabbath. Now they are condemned by that law which they have despised. With awful distinctness they see that they are without excuse. They chose whom they would serve and worship. “Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not.” (Malachi 3:18.)EGW Writings — Ellen G. I saw that there was a great necessity of more energy being manifested by the commandment keepers in their meetings, and out of their meetings. I saw that all should have something to say for God, and by so doing they would be blest, for a book of remembrance is kept of those who do not forsake the assembling of themselves together.2
Cf. Mal. 3:16: “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.”

Let those who claim to be the sons and daughters of God meet together to bring hope to one another’s hearts. We keep apart from God and from one another, but the scripture declares that “they that feared the Lord spake often one to another.” [Malachi 3:16.] Coldness, formality, and indifference are quenching the vital spark of piety. Wherever we go we should carry an atmosphere of Christian hopefulness and cheer; then those who are out of Christ will see some attractiveness in the religion we profess. We need to get more distinct glimpses of heaven, the land where all is brightness and joy. We need to know more of the fullness of the blessed hope.Homeward Bound
The Books of Record in Heaven, October 18
HB 319.5
“A book of remembrance” is written before God, in which are recorded the good deeds of “them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon His name.” (Malachi 3:16.) Their words of faith, their acts of love, are registered in heaven. Nehemiah refers to this when he says: “Remember me, O my God, . . . and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God.” (Nehemiah 13:14.) In the book of God’s remembrance every deed of righteousness is immortalized. There every temptation resisted, every evil overcome, every word of tender pity expressed, is faithfully chronicled. And every act of sacrifice, every suffering and sorrow endured for Christ’s sake, is recorded.—The Great Controversy, 480, 481.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

We came here [Tramelan] last Friday, and the Lord has given me some precious tokens for good. I spoke with much freedom to our brothers and sisters from Malachi 3:16. The Lord spoke to hearts. Abel Guenin who has been discouraged for a long time, had taken no part in the meetings, broke down and confessed his wrong, his indifference, and his discouragements. Said he would no longer remain in the place he was then in. He would come into harmony with the church and do his duty in the fear of God. The tears ran down his face while he talked. His mother has taken no part with the church and has been much prejudiced against any one from America; spoke for the first time. She bore a good testimony.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

When poor, wounded, bruised souls come to you for words of hope, you are to speak to them the words of Christ. Do you refuse to give them pleasant, courteous, kind words? Those who speak as Christ spoke will never plant bitter words like barbed arrows in the wounded soul. “The Lord hearkened and heard.” [Malachi 3:16.] Will you bear in mind that the Lord hears the words we speak, and is acquainted with the spirit that prompts your actions? Christ is the defense of all that are hidden in Him.In Heavenly Places

One Man Should Not Do All the Talking—I spoke again to the people assembled in conference from Malachi 3:16, “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another,” etc. I dwelt upon the importance of making our social meetings interesting; that one man wasn’t to do all the talking, but everyone should bear his testimony. It has been the habit of one man to get up and talk from one half hour to an hour. This is called meditation. Then the interest of the meeting is gone and no one feels that he has any testimony to bear. One or two make a few remarks and the meetings close; and there had not been the habit of having social meetings in Europe. But we are seeking to educate them on this point, that it is the duty of everyone who loves God and the truth to speak to one another words of experience and of comfort, and to tell of God’s goodness, His love, and His great mercy in giving His Son Jesus Christ to die for us while we were enemies to God.—Manuscript 29, 1887, p. 8.
