The facts should be borne in mind by all who claim to be children of God that there is a Watcher in every business transaction who records every act and deed of the transactor and [that] this record will stand just as it is written until the great day when every man shall receive according as His works have been, unless their wrongs shall have been repented of and blotted out. Any injustice done to saint or sinner will then be rewarded according to their works. <Christ identifies His interest in all the afflictions of His people.> But God will avenge those who shall treat the widow or the fatherless with oppression, or who shall rob them in any way. (Malachi 3:5) [says:] “And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.” The reason is now given why the Lord has not executed His judgment against the evil worker, “for I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” [Verse 6.] John was the forerunner of Christ; he was raised up of God to prepare the way of the Lord. There are messengers in this age sent forth of God to do a similar work, to prepare the way of the Lord’s second coming. While the work and message of these men shall be straightforward and earnest, they are not to encourage them to do nothing <in the line of business> in this work-day world. The message God sends is for the object of keeping him to his <legitimate> work, inspiring him to do this work in accordance with the Lord’s great moral standard of righteousness. Lawful business and religion <will not be in collision.>Malachi 3:5-9

Men are guilty of robbery toward God. Their selfish use of means robs the Lord of the glory that should be reflected back to Him in the relief of suffering humanity and the salvation of souls. They are embezzling His entrusted goods. The Lord declares, “I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against ... those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right.” “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation.” Malachi 3:5, 8, 9. “Go to now, ye rich men, ... your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered, and the rust of them shall be a witness against you.... Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.” “Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton.” “Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.” James 5:1-3, 5, 4.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6

The Lord is long-suffering and gracious, and to those who have done this wickedness He gives another opportunity. “Return unto Me,” He says, “and I will return unto you.” But they say: “Wherein shall we return?” Verse 7. Their means have been made to flow in channels of self-service and self-glorification as if their goods were their own and not lent treasures. Their perverted consciences have become so hard and unimpressible that they do not see the great wickedness they have done in so hedging up the way that the cause of truth could not advance.6T 388.1
Man, finite man, though using for himself the talents which God has reserved to publish salvation, to send the glad news of a Saviour’s love to perishing souls, though hedging up the way by his selfishness, inquires: “Wherein have we robbed Thee?” God answers: “In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation.” Verses 8, 9. The whole world is engaged in robbing God. With the money He has lent them, men indulge in dissipation, in amusements, revelings, feasting, and disgraceful indulgences. But God says: “I will come near to you to judgment.” Verse 5. The whole world will have an account to settle in that great day when everyone shall receive sentence according to his deeds.Testimony Treasures, vol. 3

In the Holiest I saw an ark; on the top and sides of it was purest gold. On each end of the ark was a lovely Cherub, with their wings spread out over it. Their faces were turned towards each other, and they looked downwards. [Exodus 25:18-22.] Between the angels was a golden censor. Above the ark, where the angels stood, was an exceeding bright glory, that appeared like a throne where God dwelt. [Exodus 25:20-22.] Jesus stood by the ark. And as the saints’ prayers came up to Jesus, the incense in the censor would smoke, and He offered up the prayers of the saints with the smoke of the incense to His Father. [Revelation 8:3, 4.] In the ark, was the golden pot of manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of stone which folded together like a book. [Hebrews 9:4.] Jesus opened them, and I saw the ten commandments written on them with the finger of God. [Exodus 31:18.] On one table was four, and on the other six. The four on the first table shone brighter than the other six. But the fourth (the Sabbath commandment,) shone above them all; for the Sabbath was set apart to be kept in honor of God’s holy name. [Isaiah 58:13, 14.] The holy Sabbath looked glorious—a halo of glory was all around it. I saw that the Sabbath was not nailed to the cross. If it was, the other nine commandments were; and we are at liberty to go forth and break them all, as well as to break the fourth. I saw that God had not changed the Sabbath, for He never changes. [Malachi 3:6.] But the Pope had changed it from the seventh to the first day of the week; for he was to change times and laws. [Daniel 7:25.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

What condescension to the fallen men of earth! What wondrous love! And yet this heavenly Messenger is repulsed. Hear, O heavens, and be astonished, O earth! This royal Messenger, showing such interest, such sympathy, such amazing condescension, is unwelcome. He is repulsed by indifference, repulsed by unkindness, by neglect. His patience might long ago have been exhausted, His pleadings silenced, and His warnings and entreaties stilled; but listen to His words: “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of His understanding.” Isaiah 40:28. “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” Malachi 3:6.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

It is impossible for man to change the institution of the Sabbath. It may be looked upon as trifling to keep the [Sabbath, but] when God laid the foundations of the earth He laid the foundations of the Sabbath. He rested on the Sabbath and sanctified it and pronounced it holy, to be kept through a thousand generations. They were to keep it for a sign to a thousand generations, and by that time we shall be in the city of God. This is worth your thinking about. We cannot be sanctified through error. We have an open Bible. Where is your foundation for Sunday? God says, “I change not” “nor alter the thing that has gone out of my lips.” [Malachi 3:6; Psalm 89:34.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

I say in the name of the Lord, Give your attention to this Word. The Lord has ever existed in perfection from all eternity. He has been ever what He now is, “I am that I am;” “The high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity.” [Exodus 3:14; Isaiah 57:15.] This is His title. “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” Psalm 90:2. “I am the Lord, I change not.” Malachi 3:6. When will Christians know and have a better understanding of God? God says, “I AM THAT I AM,” the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity. “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there stood over against him, with his sword drawn in his hand; and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto His servant? And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoes from off thy feet; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.” [Joshua 5:13-15.] God always has been. He is the great I AM. The psalmist declares, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting Thou art God.” [Psalm 90:2.] He is the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity. “I am the Lord, I change not,” He declares. [Isaiah 57:15; Malachi 3:6.] With Him there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. He is “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” [James 1:17; Hebrews 13:8.] He is infinite and omnipresent. Many presidents of state conferences do not attend to that which is their work—to see that the elders and deacons of the churches do their work in the churches by seeing that a faithful tithe is brought into the treasury. Malachi has specified that the condition of prosperity is in bringing to God’s treasury that which is His own. This principle needs to be often brought before the men who are lax in their duty to God, who are neglectful and careless in bringing in their tithes, gifts, and offerings to God. “Will a man rob God?” “Wherein have we robbed thee?” Is the question asked by the unfaithful stewards. The answer comes plain and positive, “In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the store house, that there may be meat in my house, and prove me herewith, saith the Lord of Hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” [Malachi 3:8-10.] Please read this whole chapter and see if words could be spoken that would be more plain and positive than these are. They are that positive that no one who desires to understand his whole duty to God needs to make any mistake in the matter. If men offer any excuse as to why they do not perform this duty, It is because they are selfish, and have not the love and fear of God in their heart.11LtMs, Lt 82, 1896, par. 7
The Lord has always required this response to His arrangements in carrying forward His work in our world. He has never changed His own devised plan. He lays claim to all as His own, but a portion of His entrusted talents He claims as His. “For I am the Lord. I change not. Therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 6, 7.]11LtMs, Lt 82, 1896, par. 11
The Lord will not hold those guiltless who are deficient in doing the work that He requires at their hands—in seeing that the church is kept wholesome and healthy spiritually, and doing all their duty; in allowing no neglect which will bring the threatened curse upon His people. A curse is pronounced upon all who withhold their tithe from God. He says, “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house.” [Verses 8-10.]11LtMs, Lt 82, 1896, par. 12
This is not a request of man; it is one of God’s ordinances, whereby His work may be sustained and carried on in the world. God help us to repent. “Return unto me,” He says, “and I will return unto you.” [Verse 7.] Men who have a desire to do their duty have it laid down in clear lines in this chapter. No one can excuse themselves from paying their tithes and offerings to the Lord.11LtMs, Lt 82, 1896, par. 14
God has said, “Prove me now herewith, if I will not open the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” What a wonderful presentation in promised blessings is He giving us. Who can venture to rob God in tithes and offerings with such a promise as this? “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruit of your grounds, neither shall your vines cast her fruit, before her time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Malachi 3:10-12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

God has a controversy with the people of this generation, because they have been unfaithful in service. They have robbed Him by appropriating to selfish uses that which He has reserved for the proclamation of the gospel. They declare that God has deserted them. But He says, “I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from Mine ordinances, and have not kept them. “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse.” Do not bring upon yourselves the curse of robbing God of the means He has lent you in trust. “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in Mine house, and prove Me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” [Verses 8-10.]20LtMs, Lt 107, 1905, par. 13
The Lord has made us His stewards. He has placed His means in our hands for faithful distribution. He asks us to render to Him His own. He has reserved the tithe as His sacred portion, to be used in sending the gospel to all parts of the world. My brethren and sisters, confess and forsake your selfishness, and bring to the Lord your gifts and offerings. Bring Him also the tithe that you have withheld. Come confessing your neglect. Prove the Lord, as He has invited you to. “I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. Said the True Witness to the church at Ephesus: “I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” Revelation 2:4, 5. The Saviour watches for a response to His offers of love and forgiveness, with a more tender compassion than that which moves the heart of an earthly parent to forgive a wayward, suffering son. He cries after the wanderer, “Return unto Me, and I will return unto you.” Malachi 3:7. But if the erring one persistently refuses to heed the voice that calls him with pitying, tender love, he will at last be left in darkness. The heart that has long slighted God’s mercy, becomes hardened in sin, and is no longer susceptible to the influence of the grace of God. Fearful will be the doom of that soul of whom the pleading Saviour shall finally declare, he “is joined to idols: let him alone.” Hosea 4:17. The last days are upon us, and Satan is working with all his hellish arts to deceive and destroy souls. Reproofs by testimony are met, almost universally, by the ones corrected and reproved, with, “I believe the testimonies, but I do not understand them.” The Lord has corrected their wrong ways in order to save them from unhappiness, deception, and ruin; but they pass on the same as if light and warnings had never come to them. If they were in harmony with God, they would not be departing from Him. It is because they are so far separated from God that they do not hear His voice as He calls to them, “Return unto me, and I will return unto you,” “and heal all thy backslidings.” [Malachi 3:7; Jeremiah 3:22.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

My heart yearns after every member of the Wessels family. If Philip had been the faithful steward God designed him to be, the now wayward members of the family would not be on the enemy’s side. If their brother Philip, to whom they looked for counsel, had continued to be a true servant of the Lord Jesus, co-operating with Him, these precious ones would have been helped, their feet would now have been treading the narrow path of self-denial which their Saviour trod. The Lord is still saying, “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.] Thank God, the truth never changes, whatever course poor, tempted souls may pursue. Christ is still calling, “Return unto me, and I will return unto thee, and heal all thy backsliding.” [Malachi 3:7; Jeremiah 3:22.] “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and I will have mercy upon him, and to our God; for he will abundantly pardon.” [Isaiah 55:7.]To Be Like Jesus

You sent Brother Ertzenberger to us as a child of God, to be qualified to enter the missionary field in Europe. We took him in, a stranger, and spared no means to educate him in the English language. We all tried to be his instructors. We took no advantage of his ignorance of our language and our customs. But we labored in our work for God to qualify him for his work. He was humble, hopeful, and God was with him. He returned to you, and there were those who felt jealous that he was bringing too much of American knowledge with him; you thought him lifted up. His testimony was not accepted, and he became very much discouraged. Satan finally succeeded in overcoming him with temptations, and he was lost to the cause of God for years. But the eye of infinite compassion was upon him; and God in mercy let him see the fearful position he was in, and said, “Return unto Me, and I will return unto thee, and heal all thy backslidings.” [Malachi 3:7; Jeremiah 3:22.] And yet this dear brother should walk carefully and tremblingly before God. Will a man rob God?” The question is put as if such a thing could not be possible. “Ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” Will you consider this and meditate upon it? He did not, after a time, “rebuke the devourer” [Malachi 3:11], but let him do his will with those who have thus placed themselves on his ground, and they were cut off by disease or instant death, without any time for repentance.5LtMs, Lt 46, 1888, par. 23

[Malachi 3:10.] God bless you is my prayer.Malachi 3:7-12

How many, through selfish plans, rob God of the praise and the thanksgiving due to His holy name, because they would hold the goods lent them in trust and fail to relieve the necessities of their brethren who are in poverty and distress. They do not break the yoke of oppression. Many rob God in tithes and in offerings, so that there is no meat in the house of God. The Lord says of them, They have “gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them.” [Malachi 3:7.]9LtMs, Ms 62, 1894, par. 26
Listen to the voice of God, speaking to every church, to every family, to every individual: “Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” [Verses 7-9.]9LtMs, Ms 62, 1894, par. 28
Open your hearts that you may be impressed with the words of the Lord: “Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 8-12.]9LtMs, Ms 62, 1894, par. 31
The Lord says, “Return unto me, and I will return unto you.” [Verse 7.] Do not, like the slothful servant, ask, Wherein have I return? Wherein have I robbed thee? God has laid out the truth plain and clear before every one who has embezzled his Lord’s goods. God is in earnest with us. We make desperate efforts to accumulate money, and there may be flattering appearances of our success, but God says, “I will blow upon it, I will scatter their substance as the wind scattereth the chaff.” [See Haggai 1:9.]Christ’s Object Lessons

You need the changes which will mold the life after the divine Pattern. Christ has said of you, “Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not.” [Luke 22:31, 32.] Brother Philip Wessels, the Lord is inviting you to come unto Him. He says, “Return unto me, and I will return unto you.” [Malachi 3:7.] He will heal all your backslidings; He will love you freely. [Hosea 14:4.] Now is our day of test and trial. The precious hours are passing away. There is no place of safety or repose or justification in the transgression of the law of God. He demands nothing short of absolute surrender to Him.12LtMs, Lt 123, 1897, par. 30
Wicked men and the church harmonize in this hatred of the law of God, and then the crisis comes. Then we see the class specified in (Malachi 3:13-15): “Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” Here are a company of disaffected professed Christians, whose chief business is to murmur and complain and accuse God by accusing the children of God. They see nothing defective in themselves, but very much to displease in others.12LtMs, Lt 123, 1897, par. 31
But while they are murmuring and complaining and falsely accusing, and doing Satan’s work most zealously, another class is brought to our notice: “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another; and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.” [Verses 16-18.]Malachi 3:8

You who have been withholding your means from the cause of God, read the book of Malachi, and see what is spoken there in regard to tithes and offerings. Cannot you see that it is not best under any circumstances to withhold your tithes and offerings because you are not in harmony with everything that your brethren do? The tithes and offerings are not the property of any man, but are to be used in doing a certain work for God; unworthy ministers may receive some of the means thus raised; but dare any one, because of this, withhold from the treasury and brave the curse of God? I dare not. I pay my tithe gladly and freely, saying, as did David, “Of thine own have we given thee.” [1 Chronicles 29:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

All who were concerned in the payment of the large wages have been guilty of robbery toward God. “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me, saith the Lord.” [Malachi 3:8.] And the result has been that God’s messengers and workers who are poor in earthly treasure are pressed into hard places. Some have large families, some have a father and mother to support, and it is a difficult matter to make ends meet. Did these men in the Office think of this? They will seek to pacify their conscience by some substitute of their own contrivance, but the books of heaven tell the story. The large wages they accepted for themselves and vindicated the acceptance of for others, they no more earned or needed than did some of those whom by their decisions they were limiting to a certain sum without a word of inquiry as to whether this would cause suffering or not. Is this doing as they would be done by? Is it loving their neighbor as they love themselves?Education

The question is asked, “Will a man rob God?” [Malachi 3:8.] In more ways than one it is possible to rob Him. Those who claim to be Christians have covenanted with Him to make an unreserved consecration of themselves—heart, soul, mind, and strength—to His service. But many have not kept their solemn vow. Their names are on the church book, showing that they have pledged themselves to do the whole will of God; yet in their business life they are making a record before the world just like the record of avowed sinners. They behave as do the children of the wicked one. All such persons are crucifying Christ afresh, putting Him to open shame.Manuscript Releases, vol. 9 [Nos. 664-770]

How common even here to find selfishness, avarice, overreaching, neglect of charities, and robbery of God “in tithes and offerings.” Among church members “in good and regular standing” there are, alas! many Achans. Many a man comes statedly to church, and sits at the table of the Lord, while among his possessions are hidden unlawful gains, the things that God has cursed. For a goodly Babylonish garment, multitudes sacrifice the approval of conscience and their hope of heaven. Multitudes barter their integrity, and their capabilities for usefulness, for a bag of silver shekels. The cries of the suffering poor are unheeded; the gospel light is hindered in its course; the scorn of worldlings is kindled by practices that give the lie to the Christian profession; and yet the covetous professor continues to heap up treasures. “Will a man rob God? When the Lord’s messenger bears a message to the church, God is speaking to the people, awakening the conscience to see that they have not been rendering an honest tithe to the Lord, and that when it was not convenient to give, they have failed to present their offerings to Him. They have used the Lord’s own money for themselves, in building houses, in purchasing horses, carriages, or lands. They do this in the hope of large returns, and every year they have the same excuse. “Will a man rob God?” (Malachi 3:8). If, in order to save, we break over the express commands of Jehovah, where is the stopping place? Where set the bounds? Transgress in a small matter, and look upon it as a matter of no particular sin on our part, and the conscience becomes hardened, the sensibilities blunted, and we can go still further until labor to quite an extent may be performed and we still flatter ourselves that we are Sabbathkeepers, when, according to Christ’s standard, we are breaking every one of God’s holy precepts. There is a fault with many Sabbathkeepers in this respect, but God is very particular, and all who think that they are saving a little time or advantaging themselves by infringing a little on the Lord’s time, will meet with loss sooner or later. God cannot bless them as it would be His pleasure to do, for His name is dishonored by them, His precepts lightly esteemed, and instead of obtaining gain, God’s curse will visit them and they will lose ten or twenty fold more than they gain. “Will a man rob God? The lands that have never heard the truth are yet to hear it. They are to become vocal with the praise of God, and to lift their voices in proclaiming the last note of warning. If the church of Christ will now use all her talents of means and of influence, according to God’s order, the great work may be carried forward gloriously. We need men who are adapted to the work. Money is also needed to carry it forward. Let the church show that she is in earnest. A steady flow of means from each member will keep the treasury supplied with funds. “Bring ye,” says God, “all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house.” [Malachi 3:10.] If all the sin-offerings and peace-offerings and thank-offerings are brought into the treasury we shall see that souls will not be so dark and backslidden from God. They will show by their works that they have a lively interest in the success of the truth and the advancement of the glory of God in the earth. Among the American brethren we see that which pains our hearts. Self-indulgence abounds in the church, and the world finds large patronage from its members, because self-denial is not practiced. Money is expended for unnecessary things, and we know that this means the limiting of donations which should be applied to the great enterprise of building up the kingdom of Christ in our world. As the world advances and converts the church to its customs, and to its fashions, and leads the professed follower of Christ to indulge in it gratifications, the treasury of God is robbed in the withholding of tithes and offerings that should be given, that there may be “meat in Mine house.” [Malachi 3:8-10.] The indolence that is seen in the churches and among those who claim to believe the truth brings its curse of results, which are represented in the parable of the slothful servant who buried his talent in the earth and misrepresented his Lord who had loaned him the talent for wise improvement. Oh, that all who have an intelligent knowledge of the truth would realize that their talents are loaned them of God to be improved by trading upon the Lord’s goods! Shall we now respond to the claims of God? He has given to us regularly and without stint, and His favors have not been withheld.15LtMs, Ms 47, 1900, par. 10
“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house.” This means a surplus in the treasury to amply advance the work of God in its various branches. “And prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” [Verse 10.] There is to be a continual flowing out, in deeds of mercy and benevolence, from those whom God is blessing. As we continually are receiving, we are to be continually giving. The Acts of the Apostles
Chapter 32—A Liberal Church
AA 338.1
As God’s work extends, calls for help will come more and more frequently. That these calls may be answered, Christians should heed the command, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in Mine house.” Malachi 3:10. If professing Christians would faithfully bring to God their tithes and offerings, His treasury would be full. There would then be no occasion to resort to fairs, lotteries, or parties of pleasure to secure funds for the support of the gospel.AA 339.1
It is the spirit of covetousness which leads men to keep for gratification of self means that rightfully belong to God, and this spirit is as abhorrent to Him now as when through His prophet He sternly rebuked His people, saying, “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation.” Malachi 3:8, 9.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

My brother, cling to the cross of Calvary. Do not be found committing robbery toward God in tithes and offerings, lest “ye be cursed with a curse.” [Malachi 3:8, 9.] If the Lord has honored you by entrusting you with large talents of means, do not allow your integrity to flinch in the slightest degree. Make it manifest before God that you acknowledge it all as His, and return to the bountiful Giver the portions which He claims in tithes and offerings. By wise appropriation of the Lord’s capital, build up your Redeemer’s kingdom in the world.8LtMs, Lt 63, 1893, par. 56
We are nearing the great day of God. Now, the present time, is the time to work, for the night cometh wherein no man can work. The heavenly intelligences are waiting for the co-operation of human agents. Oh, work with God. Be faithful to render to God His own in tithes and offerings. He says, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of Hosts, if I will not open you the windows of Heaven and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” [Malachi 3:10.]Malachi 3:8-11

The Address
1BIO 389.6
With the citing of New Testament support, a scriptural framework was assembled for the projected procedures, and it was suggested that “we gather from these facts some instruction relative to our own duty.” The pioneers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church could have gone more easily to the Old Testament and brought in the obligation of the tithe, but at this juncture, regardless of the attractiveness of the tithe, they were not sure that it was not one of those ceremonial obligations that ceased at the cross. In the occasional mention of organization they were looking to the New Testament with its seven deacons, not to the Old Testament with the appointment by Moses of the seventy. In finance they were looking to the New Testament and Paul’s counsel in 1 Corinthians 16:2 that “upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, “rather than to Malachi’s direction to “bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house” (Malachi 3:10). They conceded that the tithing system was a good plan, and it did have a strong bearing on the conclusions reached and set before the church. Here is the argument set forth in the address:1BIO 393.4
Systematic Benevolence was early endorsed by Ellen White, and she linked it with the tithe. First she assured the church in June, 1859, “The plan of systematic benevolence is pleasing to God” (Testimonies for the Church, 1:190), and then in January, 1861, in a Testimony article entitled “Systematic Benevolence,” she wrote: “Rob not God by withholding from Him your tithes and offerings.” The article closed with Malachi 3:8-11 quoted in full (Testimonies for the Church, 1:221, 222). At the outset there was no separation of tithes from offerings. The demand for funds was mainly for the support of the ministers and the evangelistic outreach.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

But on one point especially I was speaking to you with clearness and power. It was in next to the last chapter in Malachi. Please read verses 8-11. I said to the church, You are not right with God. You made your pledges before God of what you would do in gifts and offerings, but you have not considered that this was a solemn pledge given to your Creator, witnessed by the universe of heaven, and registered in the heavenly records above. Nothing can be an excuse for you to violate your pledges to your Lord. You would not, could not, do this if your hearts were in the sacred work. Nothing could be of sufficient consideration to cause you to go back on your pledges. It is not man that you are dealing with, but the Lord God of heaven.6LtMs, Lt 31, 1889, par. 17
Then the question is asked in Malachi, “Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, and prove me now herewith if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing such as there will not be room enough to receive it.” [Malachi 3:8-10.] Will we make the trial? God grant that we may do the work which the Lord has left for us to do. He is proving us to see what characters we will develop, whether eternal riches are prized above earthly things, whether self and the world are surrendered or crucified to Christ. Will we commune with Him and be in harmony with Christ here in this life? If we will not do this here, our eternal destiny is settled. We would be unfit subjects for the kingdom of heaven. Christ must be all in all to us in this life if He is our all in all in the future life.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

The sin of covetousness is fearfully denounced in the Scriptures. My brother, please read (Malachi 3:8) and onward. The Word of God is plainly expressed: “Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,” etc. [Verses 8-11.] Read the whole chapter carefully and prayerfully, with an understanding heart, and consider from whom all your blessings come.8LtMs, Lt 30, 1893, par. 36
Similar words are used in regard to the Sabbath. The deep spiritual import is explained, and the validity of God’s claim cannot be ignored without the sure result; a curse will follow the disregard of the Lord’s requirements. And the Lord makes a decided promise: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of Hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” [Malachi 3:10.]Malachi 3:8-12

There are those in the office who have withheld their tithes from the treasury, claiming that they could not see the requirement in the Word of God. But why could they not see it?—It was because selfishness was firmly rooted in the heart. They did not deny self, and make their offering to God. For years they have practised robbery toward God; but does not the Lord keep a record of all their doings? Most assuredly, for it is written that every man shall be rewarded according as his works have been, judged according to the deeds done in the body, whether they are good or whether they are evil. The Lord will not pass over the embezzlement of his goods. He is testing men to see who will be fit subjects for his kingdom above; for if they disregard his claims here, they will disregard them in the kingdom of heaven. We should heed the words of the apostle Paul when he said, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” [Romans 12:1.] Those who receive the mercies of God should have a disposition to respond to them. All things belong to God; all the good things which we enjoy are the results of divine love. God is the bountiful Giver. In His large love He has given Jesus Christ, heaven’s best gift, and how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? In His tender mercy and unspeakable love, He has not only provided for the wants of the soul, but has also not been forgetful to provide for the necessities of our bodies. He has made us His almoners, and has bestowed upon us His gifts, reserving tithes and offerings for the advancement of His work. He does not ask us to give these things because He could not get along without them, for He owns all things; but He reserves them for Himself in order to give us, as His stewards, an opportunity to follow His example. He has given us the greatest gift He could possibly make, a gift of infinite value, so that it could not be said He could give a greater gift. In return He asks that those who have been recipients of such great love should render back to Him a portion of that which He has given them, in order that “there may be meat in mine house.” [Malachi 3:10.] He pronounces the withholding of that which He has reserved as robbery toward Himself.9LtMs, Ms 25, 1894, par. 10

Those who do not return to the Lord a portion of His entrusted goods will be written in the heavenly records as embezzlers of the Lord’s property. The almost empty treasury of the Lord’s house testifies against those who have been remiss in their duty in paying to the Lord His own. They are not in a happy spiritual condition, and never can be, no matter what their assertions may profess. “Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinances and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? I am encouraged in regard to the work in Maitland. When the enemy of all righteousness takes his position in as marked a way as he did at the baptism, when the line of demarcation is so distinct that the two parties are plainly seen, I am hopeful of good results. “Then shall ye return and discern between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” [Malachi 3:18.]15LtMs, Lt 30, 1900, par. 3
“They that feared the Lord spake often one to another.” Did they speak in notes of complaint and distress, of murmuring and doleful lamentation? No, O no. “And the Lord hearkened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. And ye shall return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not. For, behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. Reformation that is not genuine is of no avail in the saving of the soul. Men must obey a “Thus saith the Lord,” by doing His commandments. The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord, and man has no moral right to dishonor it by failing to do upon it the work which he should do. God has set this day apart for His honor and glory. No manner of worldly business should be done on it. This is God’s time. For man to steal the Lord’s day, and use it for self-serving, is exceedingly offensive to God. “Will a man rob God?” “But ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” [Malachi 3:8, 9.] Yes, the whole world is guilty before God of appropriating His holy day for self-pleasing. Men have insulted God by accepting as holy a common working day. Nothing can put the stamp of the man of sin so definitely upon the world as the acceptance of the spurious sabbath, while the day God has set apart is trampled under foot.Malachi 3:9

It is more pleasant to preach, but it will not be pleasant to find that there is nothing in the treasury to draw from. Earnest labor in this line will do the churches more good than the most elaborate, pleasing discourses, for if there are in the churches those who are robbing God, the curse pronounced in Malachi rests upon them. Do you manifest impatience, and utter hasty words? Are you full of self-esteem? Have you lustful thoughts and practices? Are you doing things directly contrary to the purposes of God? Are you robbing your heavenly Father by withholding your talents and your heart from Him? Why not cease doing this way? Why not make a full surrender to God? He will impart to you His light and peace, and you will taste of His salvation. Do not any longer bring to God a lame, diseased offering. Your powers, mental and physical, are enfeebled by your own course of transgression; but such an offering is not acceptable to heaven. Why not come and be healed of your infirmities, and offer a living sacrifice, holy, and without blemish? Have you been robbing God in tithes and offerings? Here is instruction for you. Says the Lord, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (Malachi 3:10). Should Followers of Christ Give Less?
TT 178.4
The liberality required of the Hebrews was largely to benefit their own nation; today Christ has laid upon His followers the responsibility of giving the glad tidings of salvation to the world. Our obligations are much greater than were those of ancient Israel. As God’s work extends, calls for help will come more frequently. Christians should heed the command, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in Mine house.” Malachi 3:10. If professing Christians would faithfully bring to God their tithes and offerings, there would be no occasion to resort to fairs, lotteries, or parties of pleasure to secure funds.Counsels on Health

I understand that you are also proclaiming that we should not pay tithe. My brother, take “off thy shoes from off thy feet” for the place whereon you are standing is holy ground. [Exodus 3:5.] The Lord has spoken in regard to paying tithes. He has said, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” [Malachi 3:10.] But while He pronounces a blessing upon those who bring in their tithes, He pronounces a curse upon those who withhold them. Very recently I have had direct light from the Lord upon this question, that many Seventh-day Adventists were robbing God in tithes and in offerings, and it was plainly revealed to me that Malachi has stated the case as it really is. Then how dare any man even think in his heart that a suggestion to withhold tithes and offerings is from the Lord? Where, my brother, have you stepped out of the path? God has made provisions of such a character that suffering and want need not exist in our world. God instituted the tithing system by which tithes and offerings are to flow into the treasury of the Lord’s house, so that there may be means in the treasury to sustain and carry forward the work of the gospel in the earth. He has provided that there may be “meat in mine house” [Malachi 3:10], that is, means whereby warnings and entreaties may be sent to the world. If men become selfish, if they misplace the means that God has entrusted to them, and fail to act the part that God has designed they should act to sustain his work, then they will have to render an account to God for the souls that are lost through their neglect to co-operate with divine agencies. They will have to render an account for the retarding of the advancement of the work of God in the earth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

Those who are so zealous to gather everything possible into the treasury, let them draw upon those who are able, and not press men into service into the canvassing field or in any branch of the work where more is required of them than they are able to give. Money has a great value because it can do great good. Absolute necessities are met, and the faithful steward to God can bring relief at a time when help is needed. Money may be withheld from the treasury “that there may be meat in mine house.” [Malachi 3:10.] The Lord’s money is misused in extravagance, in indulgence of appetite. This entrusted capital should be used to relieve human suffering, to clothe the naked, to feed the hungry, to advance the truth, to build up the kingdom of God in our world. There are constant tests, constant temptations, constant trials; but if the agent will bring himself under control of God, and to wise men, every one who acquired a competence more than is sufficient to sustain frugal living and supply his personal wants is thrown upon his own responsibility to acknowledge God as the beneficent giver, and to keep his heart with all diligence to do righteousness.God’s Amazing Grace

The contributions required of the Hebrews for religious and charitable purposes amounted to fully one fourth of their income. So heavy a tax upon the resources of the people might be expected to reduce them to poverty; but, on the contrary, the faithful observance of these regulations was one of the conditions of their prosperity. On condition of their obedience God made them this promise: “I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field.... And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 3:11.PP 529.2

The Lord continues, “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruit of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. The Lord has made us His stewards. He has placed His means in our hands for faithful distribution. He asks us to render to Him His own. He has reserved the tithe as His sacred portion to be used in sending the gospel to all parts of the world. My brethren and sisters, confess and forsake your selfishness, and bring to the Lord your gifts and offerings. Bring Him also the tithe that you have withheld. Come confessing your neglect. Prove the Lord, as He has invited you to do. “I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 3:11.The Second Tithe

The contributions required of the Hebrews for religious and charitable purposes amounted to fully one-fourth of their income. So heavy a tax upon the resources of the people might be expected to reduce them to poverty; but, on the contrary, the faithful observance of these regulations was one of the conditions of their prosperity. Malachi 3:11. Shall we, who enjoy the full light and privileges of the gospel, be content to give less to God than was given by those who lived in the former, less favored dispensation? In the book of Malachi God specifies the reward to be given to those who are faithful. All nations will see the power of God exercised in behalf of those whom He can safely bless as His chosen ones. “I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,” He declares, and “he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground, neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field. ... And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delightsome land.” [Malachi 3:11, 12.]14LtMs, Ms 87, 1899, par. 21
There is another class, who complain of God. “Your words have been stout against me,” He says. “Ye have said, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Verses 13-15.] These weigh God’s actions in human scales. Their words are stout against Him, as they strive to vindicate themselves. By their words and actions they dishonor God and create an atmosphere of evil about their souls.14LtMs, Ms 87, 1899, par. 24
In strong contrast to the murmurers are the ones of whom God says, “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another, and the Lord hearkened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my jewels, and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” [Malachi 3:16-18.] The Lord has a people on the earth, and His working with them reveals the supernatural results which are seen when the human will is under the control of the will of God. Of them He says, “Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” [1 Peter 2:9.]Malachi 3:12

[Petaluma, Calif.] Sabbath, January 4, 1873—We arose and walked in the orchard before breakfast.... We attended meeting at 10:00 a.m. At Sabbath School I spoke a few words to the children in reference to their lesson, “And what went ye out for to see?” etc. I then spoke to the people from Malachi 3:13 and 4:1-3. Tuesday we again called on Sister Healey and spent a portion of the day with her. We went into the city to trade. Purchased some things essential for wearing apparel. We returned to Sister Rowland’s. My lungs pained me considerably. I decided it was best to remain at home, but did not feel at rest and went to the meeting. We found quite a number present; some strangers. My husband spoke freely upon the immutability of the third angel’s message. I spoke upon the last verses of the next to the last and the first verses of the last chapter of Malachi. It seemed to meet the cases of several present. Brother Gardner had been in great trial. He bore testimony that he was glad he was at the meeting; the testimony of Brother and Sister White had been blessed to him. He spoke with feeling. All who gave their testimonies spoke with freedom. The meeting was an excellent one and we felt glad that we went.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 2 (1869 - 1875)

There are some excellent lessons in the book of Malachi for those who profess to be the followers of Christ. Two classes of witnesses are presented in the prophet’s words. Of the first class it is written, “Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinances and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?” [Malachi 3:13, 14.] These words describe those who ought to have better represented the precious truth, who ought to have been an example to those newly come to the faith. For all who follow Him the Lord has prepared a rich feast of heavenly things. He has ordained that those who follow Him shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life, and walk in the light as He is in the light, for in Him is no darkness at all. The Lord does not call upon His believing, obedient followers to cover the altar with tears, but to walk cheerfully and happily along. But what complainings are represented by Malachi! These witnesses say, “It is vain to serve God.” What kind of a testimony do they give to the world? They continue, “And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Verse 15.] When anyone who loves and fears God hears men making a similar complaint, let him not respond in giving a testimony against our good and gracious heavenly Father. Malachi turns away from the dark picture which Satan presents to these professed followers of Jesus Christ, for it is a libel on the paternal character of God. Satan has framed this picture for the contemplation of poor, unbelieving, mourning souls, and they have hung it up in memory’s hall where they can gaze upon it. But the Lord has presented another picture for the contemplation of every believer. “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another; and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and thought upon his name.” [Verse 16.]9LtMs, Ms 32, 1894, par. 10
The words to which God and the angels listen with delight are words of appreciation for the great Gift that has been made to the world in the only begotten Son of God. Every word of praise for the blessing of the light of truth which has come in messages of warning, and which has dispelled the darkness of error, is written in the heavenly records. Every word that acknowledges the merciful kindness of our heavenly Father in giving Jesus to take away our sins, and to impute to us His righteousness, is recorded in the book of His remembrance. Testimonies of this kind “show forth the praises of him who hath called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.” [1 Peter 2:9.] Of such witnesses the Lord says, “And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” [Malachi 3:17.]9LtMs, Ms 32, 1894, par. 16
Let all remember that the Lord is hearkening, and that angels are recording in the book of remembrance every word that vindicates the character and mission of Christ. Of those who testify of the love of God, the Lord says, “They shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” [Malachi 3:17.]Malachi 3:13-18

Wicked men and the church harmonize in this hatred of the law of God, and then the crisis comes. Then we see the class specified in (Malachi 3:13-15): “Your words have been stout against me. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of Hosts? And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” Here are a company of disaffected, professed Christians, whose chief business is to murmur and complain and accuse God by accusing the children of God. But while they are murmuring and complaining, and falsely accusing, and doing Satan’s work most zealously, another class is brought to our notice: “Then they that feared the Lord, spake often one to another; and the Lord harkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. To those who have thought and talked of the great advantages to be gained by worldly association, the Lord declares through the prophet Malachi: “Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinances, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of Hosts? And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Malachi 3:13-15.] These are the thoughts of many, if the words are not spoken.9LtMs, Ms 53, 1894, par. 51
“Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Malachi 3:13-15.] Those are the words of the unconsecrated who are departed from God, blinded by the enemy. They cannot discern the ways and works of God. Now is represented the opposite class, “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another.” [Verse 16.] These words were not speaking evil of brethren, or making complaints of God, but were words spoken from sincere hearts, words in which were no deceit, no underhanded working, no guile. “And the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him, for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. The Story of Redemption
Enoch Translated
SR 60.1
After Adam’s fall from a state of perfect happiness to a state of misery and sin, there was danger of man’s becoming discouraged and inquiring, “What profit is it that we have kept His ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord” (Malachi 3:14), since a heavy curse is resting upon the human race, and death is the portion of us all? But the instructions which God gave to Adam, and which were repeated by Seth and fully exemplified by Enoch, cleared away the darkness and gloom, and gave hope to man, that as through Adam came death, through Jesus, the promised Redeemer, would come life and immortality.Malachi 3:16

In Malachi 3:16 an opposite class is brought to view, a class that meet together, not to find fault with God, but to speak of his glory, and tell of his mercies. These have been faithful in their duty. They have given to the Lord his own. Testimonies are borne by them, that make the heavenly angels sing and rejoice. These have no complaints to make against God. Those who walk in the light, who are faithful and true in doing their duty, are not always complaining and finding fault. They speak words of courage, hope, and faith. It is those who serve themselves, who do not give God his own, that complain. From Here to Forever

Much money has been expended for large presses that would not have been needed had all the objectionable matter been refused. God has been greatly dishonored. I am bidden to say to those in charge of our publishing houses: “Examine yourselves; have pity on your souls; for you are on losing ground. The Lord cannot bless you while you refuse to humble your proud spirits in obedience to His will.” God says, “Say to them that unless they repent, I will come near to them in judgment.” [See Malachi 3:5.] Will you not see where you have erred, and repent?
