From the beginning of the prophetic era the coming of a distinguished Teacher had been predicted—a Teacher whose words would demand universal attention, whose power would be sufficient to overcome the power of Satan. Prophecy declared that He would “preach the gospel to the poor,” and “proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” [Luke 4:18; Isaiah 61:2.] He was to “set judgment in the earth.” The isles were to “wait for His law.” [Isaiah 42:4.] The Gentiles were to come to His light, and kings to the brightness of His rising. [Isaiah 60:3.] The “Messenger of the covenant” was expected. The Sun of righteousness was to arise “with healing in His wings.” [Malachi 3:1; 4:2.]

Chapter 24—What Is Christ Doing Now?

HF 262.4

This coming was foretold also by Malachi: “The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 3:1. The coming of the Lord to His temple was “sudden,” unexpected, to His people. They were not looking for Him there.

“Behold, the Bridegroom Cometh”

HF 263.3

The coming of Christ as High Priest to the most holy place for the cleansing of the sanctuary (Daniel 8:14), the coming of the Son of man to the Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:13), and the coming of the Lord to His temple (Malachi 3:1) are the same event. This is also represented by the coming of the bridegroom to the marriage in the parable of the ten virgins of Matthew 25.

When Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple, he was only an infant of a few weeks. But he was also the Ancient of days, whose goings forth have been from of old, even from everlasting. He was indeed the long-expected Messiah, of whom the Jews had read, “The Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to his temple.” [Malachi 3:1.] To the Pharisees Christ afterward declared, “Before Abraham was, I am.” [John 8:58.] He is the head of an unchangeable priesthood, the only true high priest over the house of God.

Chapter 16—In His Temple

DA 161.1

In the cleansing of the temple, Jesus was announcing His mission as the Messiah, and entering upon His work. That temple, erected for the abode of the divine Presence, was designed to be an object lesson for Israel and for the world. From eternal ages it was God’s purpose that every created being, from the bright and holy seraph to man, should be a temple for the indwelling of the Creator. Because of sin, humanity ceased to be a temple for God. Darkened and defiled by evil, the heart of man no longer revealed the glory of the Divine One. But by the incarnation of the Son of God, the purpose of Heaven is fulfilled. God dwells in humanity, and through saving grace the heart of man becomes again His temple. God designed that the temple at Jerusalem should be a continual witness to the high destiny open to every soul. But the Jews had not understood the significance of the building they regarded with so much pride. They did not yield themselves as holy temples for the Divine Spirit. The courts of the temple at Jerusalem, filled with the tumult of unholy traffic, represented all too truly the temple of the heart, defiled by the presence of sensual passion and unholy thoughts. In cleansing the temple from the world’s buyers and sellers, Jesus announced His mission to cleanse the heart from the defilement of sin,—from the earthly desires, the selfish lusts, the evil habits, that corrupt the soul. “The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, He shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. But who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth? for He is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: and He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver.” Malachi 3:1-3.

Chapter 24—In the Holy of Holies

GC 424.3

This coming is foretold also by the prophet Malachi: “The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, He shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 3:1. The coming of the Lord to His temple was sudden, unexpected, to His people. They were not looking for Him there. They expected Him to come to earth, “in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel.” 2 Thessalonians 1:8.

GC 425.1

Says the prophet: “Who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth? for He is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: and He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.” Malachi 3:2, 3. Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy God without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters must be purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and their own diligent effort they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the investigative judgment is going forward in heaven, while the sins of penitent believers are being removed from the sanctuary, there is to be a special work of purification, of putting away of sin, among God’s people upon earth. This work is more clearly presented in the messages of Revelation 14.

GC 425.2

When this work shall have been accomplished, the followers of Christ will be ready for His appearing. “Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.” Malachi 3:4. Then the church which our Lord at His coming is to receive to Himself will be a “glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.” Ephesians 5:27. Then she will look “forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.” Song of Solomon 6:10.

GC 425.3

Besides the coming of the Lord to His temple, Malachi also foretells His second advent, His coming for the execution of the judgment, in these words: “And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not Me, saith the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 3:5. Jude refers to the same scene when he says, “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds.” Jude 14, 15. This coming, and the coming of the Lord to His temple, are distinct and separate events.

The words of the Lord in Malachi 3:1-3 lay down the work essential to be done in the church of God: “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of Hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.” A message which is as a two-edged sword must be given to the people, to clear away the evils that are seen among them. A living testimony that will awaken the paralyzed conscience is to be borne.

RH December 1, 1896, par. 21

The reproof and warning and promise of the Lord are given in definite language in Malachi 3:8; “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee?” The Lord answers, “In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” The Lord of heaven challenges those whom he has supplied with his bounties to prove him. “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of Hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

Solemnly evildoers were warned of the day of judgment to come and of Jehovah’s purpose to visit with swift destruction every transgressor. Yet none were left without hope; Malachi’s prophecies of judgment were accompanied by invitations to the impenitent to make their peace with God. “Return unto Me,” the Lord urged; “and I will return unto you.” Malachi 3:7.

Definite indeed is the Lord’s answer: “In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the store-house, that there may be meat in Mine house, and prove Me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 7LtMs, Lt 31, 1891, par. 39

The Lord will not pass over the embezzlement of His goods. He is testing men to see who will be fit subjects for His kingdom above, for if they disregard His claims here, they will disregard them in the kingdom of heaven. Suppose that all who profess to be followers of Christ should withhold from the Lord His entrusted goods, appropriate His talents to their own use, and for the advancement of their own glory, how would the work of God move forward in the world? How would those in other nations ever receive the message of truth? The Lord does not rain down money from heaven, but He honors men by entrusting to them His treasures, and He tells them what they must do. Read carefully and prayerfully the instruction the Lord has given to you in Malachi 3:8-12.

7LtMs, Lt 31, 1891, par. 40

The question is asked, “Will a man rob God?” And the answer might be given, “Yes, Lord. Some whom Thou hast honored and given a place in Thy work have been engaged in robbing Thee for years. They have indulged themselves, and have centered the good things of life upon themselves, and have refused to act their part in fulfilling the requirements of God.” “Yet ye have robbed me.” But ye say, “Wherein have we robbed thee?” Now, listen, for God is speaking to you out of His Word. “In tithes and offerings.” [Verse 8.]

7LtMs, Lt 31, 1891, par. 41

Now, how does God regard the robbery of His treasury? Listen, “Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” [Verse 9.] Hear the words of the Most High God, you who have been robbing God. “Bring ye all the tithes into the store house, that there may be meat in mine house,” not a meager portion, not one-half, or one-quarter, but all the tithes, “that there may be meat in mine house.” [Verse 10.] The reason is so plain that it commends itself to the reason of every one who has been cherishing the hateful plant of selfishness. “That there may be meat in mine house.”

7LtMs, Lt 31, 1891, par. 47

Jesus wants you now to realize your deficiencies while mercy lingers, that you may turn unto Him with your whole heart, and be supplied out of His abundant fullness, so that you may be perfect, wanting in nothing. “And prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts.” Mark it, this is not man that is addressing you, but the Lord of hosts. Will you hear Him? Will you obey Him? “If I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it, and I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the fields, saith the Lord of hosts. “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in; behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. And who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fuller’s soap. And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in the former years.” [Malachi 3:1-4.]

13LtMs, Ms 93, 1898, par. 13

Through His servant Malachi God declares: “And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and turn aside the stranger from his rights, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts. For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” [Malachi 3:5, 6.]

13LtMs, Ms 93, 1898, par. 16

There is another subject that is of consequence to every soul who would seek the Lord in prayer. Have you been honest with your God? Search carefully; for the Lord said to His church and to every individual, “I know thy works.” [Revelation 3:15.] Everything is known to God. All is open to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. The Lord says: “Even from the days of your fathers ye have gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?” [Malachi 3:7.]

13LtMs, Ms 93, 1898, par. 18

God’s appointed servants are to speak the words that God has given them. The message is to be borne to the people: “Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. ... Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the store house, that there may be meat in mine house: and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 7-11.]

21LtMs, Ms 103, 1906, par. 6

The Lord reveals to His people their special sin. “Will a man rob God?” He asks. “Yet ye have robbed Me.” Still unconvicted of sin, the disobedient inquire, “Wherein have we robbed Thee?” Definite indeed is the Lord’s answer: “In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in Mine house, and prove Me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. The words in (Malachi 3:1-4) lay down the work essential to be done in the church of God. “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold he shall come, saith the Lord of host. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fuller’s soap: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.” A message which is as a two-edged sword is to be given to the people, to clear away the evils that are seen among them. A living testimony that will awaken the paralyzed conscience, is to be borne. A work is to be done to cleanse our institutions from every evil.

11LtMs, Ms 26, 1896, par. 12

“And I will come near you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his rights, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verse 5.] All the sins here specified have been coming in among the people who claim to be the people of God; and it is high time that there was a reformation, a transformation of character. Who among us, who are called commandment-keepers, have been “partial in the law,” neglecting the living principles which are a transcript of the character of God? Has not the imperfect example of those who have departed from the law of God caused many to stumble at the law? “Therefore have I made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.” [Malachi 2:9.]

11LtMs, Ms 26, 1896, par. 13

There can be no offering made to the Lord in righteousness until practical right doing is brought into the daily life. When does God say that the offering of Judah and Jerusalem shall be pleasant unto Him as in the former years? When “he shall be a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.” [Malachi 3:3.]

11LtMs, Ms 26, 1896, par. 15

“And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy. Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the Lord your God. And if ye offer a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the Lord, ye shall offer it at your own will. It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow; and if ought remain until the third day, it shall be burnt in the fire. And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is abominable; it shall not be accepted. Therefore every one that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the hallowed thing of the Lord: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.” [Leviticus 19:1-8.] “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” [Malachi 3:6.]

11LtMs, Ms 26, 1896, par. 19

“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassion fail not. They are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.” [Lamentations 3:22, 23.] “Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.” This is the message which must be proclaimed. “Return unto me, and I will return unto you.” “But ye said, Wherein shall I return?” [Malachi 3:7.] God gives his people reproofs, warnings, and instruction. But there seems to be a manifest neglect of righteous principles. The Lord sends messengers to bear to the churches His reproofs and warnings, that their wrong may be corrected, and to give the invitation, “Return unto me, and I will return unto you,” and yet self-vindication is shown in the words, “Wherein shall we return?”

11LtMs, Ms 26, 1896, par. 20

The reproof and warning and promise of the Lord is given in definite language in Malachi 3:8. “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me.” But the question of the disobedient is, “Wherein have we robbed thee?” The Lord answers, “In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” [Verses 8, 9.] The Lord of heaven challenges those whom He has supplied with His bounties to prove Him. “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” [Verse 10.]

11LtMs, Ms 26, 1896, par. 22

“Your words have been stout against me saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully (margin, in black) before the Lord of hosts?” [Verses 13, 14.] God does not require His people to do this. Christ is the light of the world, and He says, “He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” [John 8:12.] But the mournful complaint continues, “And now we call the proud happy; yes, they that work wickedness are set up; yes, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Malachi 3:15.] This is the language of a soul in darkness. It is the sure result on the character of everyone who cannot see and understand his obligations to give to God that portion which He has specified as His own. The Lord lays His hand upon that portion which He has specified that you shall return to Him, and says, I allow you to use my bounties, after you have laid aside the tenth, and come before me with gifts and offerings.

And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Verses 13-15.] Worldly policy and worldly dealing have been brought into the church. There has been an unholy trafficking in sacred things. This the Lord hates. Selfishness and covetousness have led men to make merchandise of souls bought with the precious blood of Christ. By the adoption of worldly principles, the church has sold herself to the world. Ungodliness has triumphed.

The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials

Chapter 208—To Brn-Srs. of the Iowa Conference (cf. Lt 134, 1902)

1888 1767.1

It is righteousness that exalts a nation; and it is sin that brings ruin. With humble, contrite hearts let all study the Bible. That which is revealed in the Scriptures is for you and for your children. Eat the word, and digest it; for it is the bread of life. But do not be eager and troubled to know something in regard to things that are not revealed. Some do not seem to comprehend that which is plainly opened before them in the Scriptures concerning their eternal salvation, and as a result, their practical life is greatly deficient. If they studied the word of God and obeyed it, their minds would not be so full of conjectures in regard to things they need not understand or comprehend. <Some seem unwilling to understand the last two chapters of Malachi.>

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

God has given to man abundantly. He says, “I will lend you these goods of mine to trade upon: but I require you to return to me the tenth of all your increase.” Through Moses, directions had been given how the Lord’s talents of means should be appropriated; and again in Malachi this instruction is repeated. With all the blessings that the Lord bestows upon man, He tells him how they are to be used; and in obedience to His will there is safety and security. But when men set up their own ideas and plans, and do as God has forbidden with the talents He has entrusted to them, He counts them as “disobedient, unthankful, unholy.” [2 Timothy 3:2.]

11LtMs, Ms 37, 1896, par. 8

It is the selfishness, the unsanctified thoughts and works, that have grieved the Lord, and have turned away His blessing from His people. The third chapter of Malachi is one of weighty importance to all who live upon the earth; for here is plainly revealed the will and purpose of God, and the turning away of those who claim to be the people of the Lord into false and forbidden paths. Will you take your Bible, and read this carefully, and solemnly, under the influence of the Holy Spirit of God? Make an application to yourself of these decisive words.

11LtMs, Ms 37, 1896, par. 9

Verse five is applicable to many, “I will come near to you to judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.” There is a work of restoration to be done before God will accept the repentance, or heal the wounds, that sin has made. “For I am the Lord, I change not: therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed (in your evil doings). Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?” [Verses 6, 7.]

11LtMs, Ms 37, 1896, par. 10

How many are asking this question at this point in their experience, as if they were altogether innocent of any wrongdoing? The answer comes, “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.” [Verse 8.] You have withheld from Me the portion that I had reserved that I might advance My work, that the gospel of My kingdom might be sent to all parts of the world, as a witness to all nations. You have lived to please yourselves; you have manifested selfishness; you have taken My reserved talents to use for your own advantage. You would not deny self, take up your cross, and follow me, your Lord. It is not because you could not do this, but because you would not. You have not chosen the humble, self-denying life of which your Redeemer has given you an example. You preferred to run the risk, to venture the salvation of your souls, in practicing a system of robbery toward God, robbing Me of treasure that I had reserved to carry forward My work in the world, that it might be a praise in all parts of the earth. At the center of the work you have put your hands into My treasury, and the funds which should have been to you a sacred trust, you have consumed in incidental expenses, which self-denial and self-sacrifice, a limiting of some of your selfish indulgences, would have provided for. But self, self, self, has been indulged, and My treasury has been robbed of the funds brought to it in order that there might be meat in my house to sustain My servants in opening the Scriptures to those who are nigh and afar off.

11LtMs, Ms 37, 1896, par. 17

This matter should open the eyes of all our people to see how easy it is to depart from justice, truth, and the keeping of the way of the Lord, when there is a desire to follow a certain course, and God does not lead the way. What do these infringements mean to those who give their consent to this robbery of God’s treasure? Let the prophet speak: “Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” [Malachi 3:9.] Read now the words of the prophet to the close of the chapter, and then let there be a short time of silence, five or ten minutes of close examination of the hearts of all who read. There has been altogether too little heed given to the warnings, reproofs, and counsels from the Lord. It is a solemn record that many will have to meet in that great day when every man shall be judged according to his works.

11LtMs, Ms 37, 1896, par. 20

I asked, “How do you regard our obligations to God, who give us life and breath, and all the blessings we enjoy? Would you have our indebtedness to God continually increasing? Would you rob Him of the portion which He has never given us to use for any other purpose than to advance His work, to sustain His servants in the ministry? For the answer to your question the prophet Malachi asks, ‘Will a man rob God? But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee?’ as though there was a willingness to misunderstand this subject. The answer comes ‘In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.’ [Malachi 3:8, 9.] After such a statement, would I dare say to you, You need not pay tithes as long as you are in debt? Shall I tell you to be sure to pay all you owe any man, although you rob God to do so?”

Friday, October 2, W. C. White and Sara McEnterfer, my secretary, accompanied me to Sydney. We were met at Ashfield by Brother Semmens, and during our stay in Sydney were entertained at his house. Sabbath, W. C. White met with the church at Parramatta. Brother Schowe conducted the morning meeting at Ashfield, and Brother Semmens conducted the service at Newtown. Sabbath afternoon I met with the church at Ashfield. The Lord gave me a message for the people assembled. I presented before them the third chapter of Malachi. I cannot see how the Lord could present His requirements in a clearer and more forcible manner than He has done in this chapter.

11LtMs, Ms 60, 1896, par. 11

God lays His hand upon all man’s possessions, saying, “I am the owner of the universe, and these goods are mine. The tithe you have withheld I reserved for the support of my servants in their work of opening the Scriptures to those who are in the regions of darkness, who do not understand my law. In using My reserve fund to gratify your own desires, you have robbed souls of the light which I made provision they should receive. You have had opportunity to show loyalty to Me, but you have not done so. You have robbed Me, for you have stolen my reserved fund. ‘Ye are cursed with a curse.’” [Malachi 3:9.]

11LtMs, Ms 60, 1896, par. 12

The Lord is longsuffering and gracious, and He gives those who have done this wickedness another chance. “Return unto me,” He says, “and I will return unto you.” But they say, “Wherein shall we return?” [Verse 7.] Their means have been made to flow in channels of self-service and self-glorification, as if their goods were their own, and not lent treasures. Their perverted consciences have become so hard and unimpressible that they do not realize the great wickedness they have done in so hedging up the way that the cause of truth could not advance.

11LtMs, Ms 60, 1896, par. 13

Man, finite man, though using for himself the talents which God has reserved to publish salvation, to sent the glad news of a Saviour’s love to perishing souls, and hedging up the way by his selfishness, inquires, “Wherein have we robbed thee?” God answers, “In tithes and in offerings. Ye are cursed with a cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” [Verses 8, 9.] The whole world is engaged in robbing God. With the money He has lent them they indulge in dissipation, in amusements, revellings, feasting, and disgraceful indulgences. But God says, “I will come near you to judgment.” [Verse 5.] The whole world will have an account to settle in that great day when every one shall receive sentence according to his deeds.

11LtMs, Ms 60, 1896, par. 14

God pledges Himself to bless those who will obey His commandments. “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground, neither shall you vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 10-12.]

11LtMs, Ms 60, 1896, par. 16

“Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God, and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are delivered.” [Verses 13-15.] Those who withhold from God His own make these complaints. The Lord asks them to prove Him by bringing their tithe into His storehouse, and to see whether He will not pour them out a blessing. But they cherish rebellion in their hearts, and complain of God, and at the same time they rob Him, and embezzle His goods. When their sin is presented to them, they say, “I have had adversity; my crops have been poor; but the wicked are prospered. It does not pay to keep the ordinance of the Lord.”

11LtMs, Ms 60, 1896, par. 18

In (Malachi 3:16) an opposite class is brought to view, a class that meet together, not to find fault with God, but to speak of His glory, and tell of His mercies. These have been faithful in their duty. They have given to the Lord His own. Testimonies are borne by them that make the heavenly angels sing and rejoice. These have no complaints to make against God. Those who walk in the light, who are faithful and true in doing their duty, are not always complaining and finding fault. They speak words of courage, hope, and faith. It is those who serve themselves, who do not give God His own, that complain.

11LtMs, Ms 60, 1896, par. 19

“They that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” [Verses 16-18.]

I had a most solemn message for the people on the subject of tithe and offerings. Some present had claimed to be unable to see the tithe question. Were they incapable of perception to discern this question, as old and far back as the days of Abraham? After he made the conquest over kings and recovered [the] goods stolen from the inhabitants of Sodom, and the captives, and returned them to the king of Sodom, “Melchizedek king of Salem”—the representative of Jesus Christ—“brought forth bread and wine:”—not fermented—“and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: and blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.” [Genesis 14:18-20.] I read verse by verse Malachi, chapters three and four. I never gave a more close and searching message than that day, Sabbath, October 3, 1896.

The whole value of the life-work is measured by the employment of the entrusted talents. They are the instrumentalities with which we are to work, and our final reward will depend upon the piety and the earnestness and unselfishness which characterizes our work. Day by day we are making our work for eternity. Read Malachi 3. The subject is here presented in a striking, plain, sharp, decided manner. It is not traced by human pen, but is the voice of God speaking for the benefit of all living upon the earth.

Our churches are in no wise to be neglected. Whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, they are to be instructed in regard to their duty, which is plainly specified in the third chapter of Malachi. The entire chapter should be brought before those who do not realize their duty, for their souls cannot be free, they cannot receive the blessing of God, unless they take up their neglected duties and no longer rob God in tithes and offerings. Shall church members then be left to pass along, robbing God of His own? “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” [Verses 8, 9.]

“Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts. And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Verses 13-15.] These are the sentiments of those who venture to refuse to hear Him that speaks from heaven, and who choose to walk after their own devices. “Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.” [Isaiah 50:10, 11.]

Those in our churches who have accepted a theory of truth, who have not been truly converted, who have refused to co-operate with God by giving Him their tithes and offerings, should read the third chapter of Malachi. The members of the churches have had great advantages. Yet some refuse to obey God’s plainest requirement. They refuse to help to support the ministers in their labor for the churches. The spiritual life of these corresponds with their failure to fulfill their obligations. They think that the ministers should devote their time to keeping the breath of life in them. They think that God’s servants should look upon themselves as highly favored if those for whom they thus labor continue in the faith at all. They think that they should be allowed to disregard the provisions God has made whereby His blessing may rest upon the church. They do nothing to bring the peace and approval of God to their souls. They do nothing to gain the ministration of the heavenly angels. They are under the cloud of God’s disapproval, for the Lord cannot work with and bless those who walk directly contrary to His special arrangements.

I believe our brethren arrived in Adelaide on Friday evening, but these men refused to converse with them. They gave out an appointment for a meeting Sunday evening, and asked Brother Daniells to preach in the tent that same evening. This he refused to do, going to hear them instead. They had said repeatedly that they would have nothing to say against Adventists. On Sabbath Brother Daniells preached from the third chapter of Malachi. But you will learn all in the copies of letters sent.

Then shall he return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.” [Verses 16-18.] These words tell us what the companies who have been gathered out are to do. They are to build each other up in the most holy faith. The energies of the ministers are not to be consumed in preaching to the churches. Strong, vital energy is to be exercised to save the souls that are perishing outside of the church in the regions beyond.

The Lord requests His church to have a higher grade of piety, a more just sense of duty, a clear realization of their obligation to their Creator. All who will read the third chapter of Malachi will see that God calls for systematic contributions from His people. The funds so given will be abundantly blessed. If all whose names are on the church books would give to the Lord a tenth of their increase, as He has prospered them, abundant resources would swell the revenues of the church. God desires even the poorest to give their gifts, small though they may be. By giving as we have been prospered, we acknowledge God’s mercy and liberality in supplying our necessities.

I will write a few lines more. When I see those who assemble at our camp meetings drawn upon so strongly as were those from Rockhampton and Brisbane, men who are able to earn for a family of nine or ten children only a mere pittance—five shillings per day—can we be surprised that at times these souls are tempted, when they live upon the coarsest fare, while those who are in altogether more favorable circumstances scarcely know what it means to deny self and take up the cross and follow our Lord whithersoever He goeth? Calls need to be made far and near to get everything before the people, [so] that the curse of God shall not come upon them for withholding. When I read (Malachi 3) I greatly fear we have not done all our duty to impress upon the people the work essential to be done to meet the approval of God.

Monday morning I spoke to the brethren from the third chapter of Malachi. We then called for those to come forward who wanted to be Christians and who had not the evidence of their acceptance with God. About thirty responded. Some were seeking the Lord for the first time, and some who were members of other churches were taking their position upon the Sabbath. We gave all an opportunity to speak. The free Spirit of the Lord was in our midst. After prayer had been offered for those who had come forward, candidates for baptism were examined. Six were baptized.

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it. Any region that is left in darkness testifies to our unfaithfulness. Those who know the truth are not to call for constant labor from the ministers. You are not to do this work by proxy. You are to give evidence to the world that you are Christlike. You are to practice self-denial and self-sacrifice. In the third chapter of Malachi two parties are brought to view. Here the Lord denounces against His professed people who are not faithful sentinels. The charge and challenge of God against this people is marked and decided. “I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerer and against the adulterer, and against the false swearer, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts. For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them.

“And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delightsome land saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 5-12.] Man’s duty to be faithful in giving the Lord the portion which He claims in tithes and offerings, that there may be a supply to carry forward the work without embarrassment or hindrance is plainly specified.

14LtMs, Ms 15, 1899, par. 4

A people is brought to view who are not filled with the Holy Spirit, because they have not walked humbly with God and been faithful and clean and pure and holy in His sight. God says, “Your words have been stout against me. ... Yet ye say, what have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God, and what profit is it that we accept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? And now we call the proud happy; ... yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Verses 13-15.]

14LtMs, Ms 15, 1899, par. 6

While these poor, deceived, unconsecrated, jealous, envious souls are allowing Satan to take possession of their minds, while they voice his spirit and please and glorify him and dishonor God, a more pleasant picture is brought before us of another party. “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the lord hearkened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written for them that feared the Lord and that spake upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels.” [Verses 16, 17.]

14LtMs, Ms 15, 1899, par. 7

Here a different note is introduced. Testimonies of thankfulness, helpful testimonies, are borne. The believers encourage one another and glorify God by their patience, hope, and charity. The Holy Spirit is imparted to them, and as they receive they impart. “And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” [Verses 17, 18.]

The Word of the living God is an assurance, so positive and ample that it leaves no room for mistake or limitation. God invites to prayer, and promises to answer. We are taking Him at His word, which is Yea and Amen in Christ Jesus. His resources cannot be exhausted. He challenges all who will to prove the Lord God of hosts, and see, if they will do their part, what He will do in their behalf. See Malachi 3.

Let not the physicians, managers, or nurses in our sanitariums be guilty of incurring a debt in the matter of tithes and offerings. None of them are released from their obligations to God in this matter, any more than am I. The promise of prosperity is given to us on condition that we cheerfully and gladly return to God the portion He claims as His own. Before those in the sanitarium, you who occupy positions of trust are to set a right example in this matter. In the fear and love of God you are to return to Him His own, as specified in the third chapter of Malachi. Then God’s blessing will rest upon your well-directed efforts, as you perseveringly advance in right lines, discarding every phase of evil. Then the most difficult undertaking may be carried forward to success, for God will co-operate with the humble, faithful worker.

“The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.” [Psalm 24:1.] This world is the Lord’s storehouse, from which we are ever drawing. He has provided fruits and grains and vegetables for our sustenance. For us He makes the sun to shine and the rain to fall. The whole human family, good and evil, are constantly drawing from God’s storehouse. It makes every difference with those so highly privileged how they receive the Lord’s gifts and how they treat the contract the Lord has made with them. He has made them His almoners, directing them to draw from His storehouse, and then make a return to Him in gifts and offerings, “that there may be meat in mine house,” He says. [Malachi 3:10.]

It is righteousness that exalts a nation, and it is sin that brings ruin. With humble, contrite hearts let all study the Bible. That which is revealed in the Scriptures is for you and for your children. Eat the Word and digest it, for it is the bread of life. But do not be eager and troubled to know something in regard to things that are not revealed. Some do not seem to comprehend that which is plainly opened before them in the Scriptures concerning their eternal salvation, and as a result their practical life is greatly deficient. If they studied the Word of God and obeyed it, their minds would not be so full of conjectures in regard to things they need not understand or comprehend. <Some seem unwilling to understand the last two chapters of Malachi.>

I spoke from Malachi, third chapter. After speaking above one hour I called those forward who were unconverted, and also the backsliders and those who felt that they had sins upon them that separated them from God. Before our effort closed, sixty-five came forward. Deep feeling pervaded the meeting. There was much weeping, many confessions made, well wet down with tears. Parents were pleading for their children, and youth were soliciting the youth to give their hearts to God. In speaking and entreating sinners, I stood upon my feet about four hours.

Will my brethren consider these Scriptures? In the fifty-eighth of Isaiah there is light for those who rejoice in the hope of the soon-coming morning. The Lord desires to send us the reviving, healing beams of His sunshine. “The fashion of this world passeth away,” but the fashion of the world to come will endure forever. [1 Corinthians 7:31.] With what infinite bliss will the righteous be rewarded! What boundless joys will be theirs!

We are familiar with the prayer, “Thy will be done in earth, as it is done in heaven.” [Matthew 6:10.] Do we individually try to act so that the Lord’s will may be done in earth as it is done in heaven? How does the third chapter of Malachi present itself to the minds of the members of the Healdsburg church? Do you all pay a faithful tithe, that the work of proclaiming the gospel message may go forward with power? Thus you may do the will of God on earth as it is done in heaven.

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 12

Let the whole of this chapter be read slowly, solemnly, and with proper emphasis, in the Healdsburg church. The terms which God makes with His people are positive and clearly defined. All who disobey will be without excuse. God’s claims are clearly stated. The result of dealing falsely with God and with one another is plainly pointed out. God says, I who know your selfishness and your covetousness, which is idolatry, “will come near you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me. ... For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” [Verses 5, 6.]

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 15

The longsuffering of God, expressed in the words, “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed,” means a great deal to us. [Malachi 3:6.] The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The longsuffering of God is wonderful, because it means that God puts a constraint upon His own attributes. It is Omnipotence exerted over Omnipotence. Do we realize that it is owing to God’s divine forbearance that our lives are prolonged? Had the Lord acted toward us as we have acted toward one another, what would have become of us? God is to be honored and glorified, in that He has not cut us asunder and appointed us our portion with the hypocrites and unbelievers.

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 20

“Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you.” He does not leave them hopeless and discouraged. “Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Malachi 3:7.]

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 21

“But ye said, Wherein shall we return?” [Verse 8.] Blind in regard to spiritual things, they vindicate their course as though there were no need of such language being addressed to them. They are righteous in their own estimation.

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 22

“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee?” Had they read the Scriptures, they would have known where they were robbing God. When they asked, “Wherein have we robbed thee?” God answered, “In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruit of your ground, neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed, for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 8-12.]

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 24

“Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord, yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? Yea, now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Verses 13-15.]

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 26

The Lord looks beneath the surface. He reads every purpose of the mind, and He says to these delinquents, who are robbing Him and neglecting the work of mercy He has given them, “Ye have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied Him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delighteth in them, or, Where is the God of judgment?” “I will come near to you in judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Malachi 2:17; 3:5.]

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 27

At this very time, in contrast to the picture of those whose hearts and minds are blinded by selfishness, a more pleasant picture is presented. “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another; and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” [Verses 16, 17.]

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 28

When this takes place, the difference between the two parties in our world is made manifest. That which many cannot now see or understand is made plain. “Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.” [Verse 18.]

16LtMs, Ms 24, 1901, par. 36

The rubbish of questionable principles and practices is to be swept away. The Lord desires the mind to be renovated, and the heart filled with the treasures of truth. He can and will give His people sanctified memories, that they may work to His honor and glory. But how can He work with those whose spiritual perceptions are so beclouded that they cannot see the duties so plainly stated in the third chapter of Malachi?

If children see their parents practicing the least dishonesty in robbing God of tithes and offerings, if they are not taught to bring their gifts to the One who has given them all things, if in their childhood they do not realize their obligations to God, they will, when grown to years of maturity, steel their hearts against the clearest discourses that they hear from the minister in the church. They will say, “Father and mother have not done thus, and they are good Christians.” By allowing children to grow up careless and indifferent in regard to presenting to God the tithes and offerings which He requires, parents rob Him to the third and fourth generation; for their children and their children’s children will have no inclination to fear and obey God. The third chapter of Malachi condemns every unfaithfulness in withholding tithes and offerings. Let us all bring to God an honest tithe. Unless we do this, how is the gospel ministry to be maintained? We cannot expect God to rain money from heaven into His empty treasury; for He has made us His helping hand. We are entrusted with means, and blessed with food and clothing. In return, He requires faithfulness in rendering to Him, not only the tithe, but liberal gifts.

He who gave His only begotten Son to die for you has made a covenant with you. He gives you His blessings, and in return He requires you to bring Him your tithes and offerings. No one will ever dare to say that there was no way in which he could understand in regard to this matter. God’s plan regarding tithes and offerings is definitely stated in the third chapter of Malachi. God calls upon His human agents to be true to the contract He has made with them. “Bring ye all the tithes into my storehouse,” He says, “that there may be meat in mine house.” [Verse 10.]

16LtMs, Ms 57, 1901, par. 3

Duty is duty and should be performed for its own sake. But the Lord has compassion upon us in our fallen condition and accompanies His commands with promises. He calls upon His people to prove Him, declaring that He will reward obedience with the richest blessings. “Prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes; and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 10, 11.] He encourages us to give to Him, declaring that the returns He makes to us will be proportionate to our gifts to Him. “He that soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.” [2 Corinthians 9:6.] “God is not unrighteous to forget your work and your labor of love.” [Hebrews 6:10.]

16LtMs, Ms 57, 1901, par. 5

The Lord speaks, saying, “Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” “Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them.” [Malachi 3:9, 7.] Souls are perishing in sin because church members are robbing God, lavishing indulgences upon themselves, while the treasury of God is poorly supplied with funds. Thus God is dishonored and His cause is impoverished. There are not means enough in the treasury to supply God’s laborers in the field of service. Christ looks upon a vineyard unworked, a world unwarned, with wickedness increasing on every hand. Men and women are spending the Lord’s goods in selfish gratification, preparing for the fearful punishment which must come upon them unless they repent.

16LtMs, Ms 57, 1901, par. 15

Ask yourself the question, What am I doing with the Lord’s talents? Are you placing yourselves where the words are applicable to you, “Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation?” [Malachi 3:9.] We are living in a time of solemn privilege and sacred trust, a time in which our destiny is being decided for life or for death. Let us come to our senses. You who claim to be children of God, bring your tithes to His treasury. Make your offerings willingly and abundantly, according as God has prospered you. Remember that the Lord has entrusted you with talents, upon which you are to trade diligently for Him. Remember also that the faithful servant takes no credit to himself. All the praise and glory is given to the Lord. “Thou deliveredst unto me thy pound.” [See Luke 19:11-27.] No gain could have been made unless there had first been a deposit. There could have been no interest without the principle. The capital was advanced by the Lord. Success in trading comes from Him, and to Him belongs the glory.

The need and importance of paying tithe is plainly pointed out in the third chapter of Malachi. God says, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” [Verse 10.]

17LtMs, Lt 38, 1902, par. 22

If you lead the church to disregard this requirement of the Lord, will you not be leading them in crooked paths, and will not the Lord hold you accountable for their neglect of duty? If you neglect so plain a “Thus saith the Lord,” I greatly fear that you will make of little account many other of His requirements, choosing to do as you please, and to risk the consequences. Temptations to make of none effect the requirements of God are abundant. Yield not to them. Come up square and true to the very line God has laid down. Satan tempts us to withhold from the Lord His own. Can we doubt what the result of yielding to this temptation will be when we read the words, “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” [Verses 8, 9.]

17LtMs, Lt 38, 1902, par. 24

We are in no case to allow one statement of Scripture to obscure another statement of Scripture. God’s Word in regard to paying tithe is plain and decided. Sad indeed will be the consequences to those who disobey. Blessings are given for obedience and curses for disobedience. To those who disobey, God says, “Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me.” To those who obey, He says, “I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 9, 11, 12.]

17LtMs, Lt 38, 1902, par. 26

In the third chapter of Malachi the danger signal is uplifted. In this chapter the Lord cautions His people against every species of self-indulgence. He who yields to selfishness, withholding from the Lord the portion He claims as His own, is making a record that he will not care to meet. He is leaving undone that which the Lord requires him to do.

Let every member of the churches in Iowa carefully study the instruction given in the fifty-eighth chapter of Isaiah and in the third and fourth chapters of Malachi. Will my brethren consider these Scriptures? In the fifty-eighth of Isaiah there is light for those who rejoice in the hope of the soon-coming morning. The Lord desires to send us the reviving, healing beams of His sunshine. “The fashion of this world passeth away” [1 Corinthians 7:31], but the fashion of the world to come will endure forever. With what infinite bliss will the righteous be rewarded! What boundless joy will be theirs!

Today how many are reading and heeding the message given in the last two chapters of Malachi? Many have robbed God, retaining the tithe money, which belongs to Him. Because they have refused to return to Him that which is His own, His work has been retarded. The money that should have filled His treasury has been sparingly brought in, and consequently the work that ought to have been done has not been done. The gospel has not yet been preached to many of the poor, the needy, and the broken-hearted.

How can the families that withhold from God the tithes and the offerings that should be given to sustain His work in the world offer up their prayers in faith? How can they remain innocent of the blood of souls, when because of unfaithful stewardship they allow many to die in ignorance of the truth? How can they deny that they have robbed God, when He withholds His blessing from them? What can they say, when the curse of God is pronounced upon them, “Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation”? [Verse 9.]

Now, my brother, had you been living and walking in the light which the Lord gave you one year since, in Napier during the camp meeting, you would, as a faithful steward of God, [have] been on the ground the very first of the camp meeting in Wellington. You would have considered your garden of the soul needed to be watered with the dew of heaven and the showers of grace, and you would have advanced spiritually. You have the third chapter of Malachi to study and practice, else the sure visitation of God will come upon you, and all who neglect to follow out through love and fear of God every specification in His Word, lest you be found committing robbery toward God. You cannot afford it.

8LtMs, Lt 70, 1893, par. 27

The tithe has been a vexed question with you, but as God has spoken in Malachi without any if’s or and’s about the matter, you had better come as obedient children dependent upon Him for all you have and give to Him that portion upon which He has laid His hand saying, This part is Mine. Place it in the treasury, with your gifts and offerings, “that there may be meat in mine house.” [Malachi 3:10.] I therefore entreat of you, as brethren whom I highly respect and love in the Lord, not to venture to rob God in tithes or in offerings; but let every soul who claims to believe in God comply with His requirements, “that there may be meat in mine house.” This is God’s way of carrying forward His work of sending the light of truth to all parts of the world, to those who are in darkness, that Christ Jesus may be uplifted to the world, and the saving truth be proclaimed to all nations. Why are the judgments of God in our land? Because He has been insulted, His love and requirements unheeded, and men have taken His entrusted gifts as their own productions, and used them as they pleased, and the work that ought to have been done has not been done in the world.

I am feeling quite well this morning. Yesterday I was strengthened to speak for one hour at the Sanitarium. I spoke from the third chapter of Malachi, and the Lord gave me freedom. The chapel was well filled, and all listened attentively. Dores took down my talk, and it will be written out as soon as he can get time. I spoke of the needs of the work in Washington and of the importance of our now doing our best to advance the work there, that unbelievers may see that having begun the work, we are able to finish it. I also mentioned the calls that are constantly coming in from foreign fields for men and means with which to carry on the work.

The third and fourth chapters of Malachi teach many important lessons. They are full of weighty sentences. We are to consider these chapters carefully. The Lord is weighing character. Every chapter of the work carried on in Battle Creek has been recorded in the books of heaven, from the first action to the last. Our people are not to invest large sums of money in the production of health foods. It has been plainly stated that the light regarding health foods was not given for one man’s benefit alone. I have been given light on this subject. We are not to accept this offer. Our people can use the talent God has given them to prepare foods such as He would be pleased to have them prepare for the use of the common people. The Lord has given the sunshine and the rain, and has caused the fruit to grow, and the earth to produce that which may be prepared for the food of mankind. He requires His family diligently to till the soil, that it may produce those things that may be used as food. They are to plant the seed and care for it as it grows. This is the provision that He has made for man’s food. He has given genius and tact to man, that he may prepare from the fruit of the earth a great variety of foods. Grains, vegetables, and fruits are to be planted and cultivated. The ground is to be dressed and worked, and the earth will produce her treasures.

21LtMs, Lt 354, 1906, par. 8

The angels were the husbandmen who, under God, educated Adam and Eve to cultivate the soil and to care for the fruit trees provided in great variety for the use of mankind. God has given to man the great garden of the earth and knowledge and wisdom by which to produce the best results. The blessings of the field, the blessings of the orchard, and all other fruits of the soil are to be faithfully tithed, “that there may be meat in Mine house.” [Malachi 3:10.] Specified offerings and gifts were also to be made to help the poor and to sustain the work of God in its growth.

The overseer of the flock of God should faithfully discharge his duty. If he takes the position that because this is not pleasant to him he will leave it for some one else to do, he is not a faithful worker. Let him read in Malachi the words of the Lord, charging the people with robbery toward God in withholding the tithes. The mighty God declares, “Ye are cursed with the curse.” [Verse 9.] When the one who ministers in word and doctrine sees the people pursuing a course that will bring this curse upon them, how can he neglect his duty to give them instruction and warning? Every church member should be taught to be faithful in paying an honest tithe.

But who may abide the day of his coming and who shall stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap, and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them [as] gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness ... And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorrows and against the adulterers and against the false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of Hosts ... The money trust is plainly represented in Malachi. The Lord provides gold and silver through His representatives upon the earth, to sustain the work of God in its various branches; therefore every child of God should consider and value money in the sense of the good that he can do with it, inasmuch as he can appropriate it to advance the cause and work of God upon the earth for the salvation of the purchase of Christ’s blood. In the wise disposal of His goods, the Lord does not act capriciously, but with an intelligent knowledge of the known ability of every entrusted agent.

10LtMs, Lt 37, 1895, par. 13

The tithe of all we possess, of all our income, is God’s. And if we withhold that which belongs to God, it is robbery toward God. A tenth the Lord claims as His own, and gifts and offerings beside this as His cause may need. All the Lord requires of anyone is to deal justly. See Malachi chapter three. With some a tenth would represent a sum far below the right proportion of their giving; let it be measured with an eye single to the glory of God, whose we are and whom we serve, whether our expenditures for our own gratifications exceed that which the treasury needs for the advancing of the work of God. There can no definite rule be laid down upon which individuals shall act, further than the Lord has given to us in His Word. The giving must be heartily, essentially acknowledging our responsibility to God for every blessing He has given us.

God’s people are not to be treated as the servants of the conference, to be bound and released at its pleasure. God is dishonored, and it is time you called a halt. The men who live out Christ’s lessons in practical life are His co-workers. The man who acts upon worldly principles is serving another master. The two classes do not blend into one another imperceptibly like the colors of a rainbow; Christ’s likeness and Satanic attributes stand out as distinct as midnight in contrast with midday. The Christian differs from the worldling in nature, in taste, in pursuits. The words of the prophet Malachi need to be read, the warnings heeded, and the instructions practiced. From the first word to the last, this book should be our lesson sheet, in the home life, in the church, and before the world. God calls upon you, “Why halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God serve him, if Baal, then serve him.” [1 Kings 18:21.]

God will not approve or bless the authorities at Battle Creek in turning things upside down, departing from the faith once delivered to the saints. Read Malachi 3:3. The whole chapter should be studied. Please read also 1 Samuel 2:12-17. If the extortion practiced by the sons of Eli was a sin before God, how does the sin of selfish men who have accepted $30 a week for their labor stand in the sight of a holy God. Where is seen the practice of the self-denial and self-sacrifice of Christ? What example has been given at the very heart of the work at Battle Creek? Is it an example of devotion and self-sacrifice that may be safely followed by other institutions just as worthy?

We have had an experience in the work of God. There were times when the enemy came in great power to destroy; from hour to hour the men of faith had to depend on the blessings that came from God. The great topic of interest was how to save the souls of those that were ready to perish. The great plan of salvation drew men close together in unity and love. The social intercourse was profitable. The love of the Redeemer and the ways and means of saving perishing souls was the burden of our hearts. Holiness, and the Author and Finisher of our faith, were the interesting subjects. You have failed in fulfilling God’s requirements, and have practiced robbery toward God all your life. Please turn to the third chapter of Malachi, and read the entire chapter. The Lord says, “Even from the days of your fathers ye have gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them.” But He does not cast off the offender because of his ingratitude, because he has not appreciated the blessings, the light and the generous favors He has bestowed upon him. He holds out to the sinner His forgiving mercy, saying, “Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.” But ye said, “Wherein shall we return?” [Verse 7.]

I am commissioned to bring these things before you, to reprove you for your course of action, and to set before you the fact that your soul is in peril. The question is asked, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul, or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” [Mark 8:36, 37.] The question is asked, “Will a man rob God?” [Malachi 3:8.] Would you make the excuses before heaven that you have made here for neglect of duty, and the excuses that you have put into the mouths of others? If a man dealt dishonestly with you, you would seize him as did the relentless servant in the parable, and cry with passion, “Pay me that thou owest.” [Matthew 18:28.]

But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fuller’s soap.” [Malachi 3:1, 2.] The coming of Christ which is here referred to is not his second advent to this earth, but his coming to the investigative judgment in the most holy place of the sanctuary in heaven. Thus the message is especially to us who are living in the time of the judgment.

8LtMs, Ms 99, 1893, par. 11

“And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.” [Verse 3.] An offering in righteousness is an offering of means that has been acquired justly. It is an offering from one who has exercised mercy and thoughtfulness, and in no case has wronged his neighbor. It is such a gift, prompted by love, that is fragrant before God. “Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.” [Verse 4.]

8LtMs, Ms 99, 1893, par. 12

“And I will come near to you to judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of Hosts.” [Verse 5.] There are those who have obtained means by dishonest practices or by oppression of the poor, and then to ease their conscience they bring an offering to God. In so doing they dishonor the Lord. He cannot accept their gifts.

8LtMs, Ms 99, 1893, par. 15

The prophet Malachi continues: “Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all”—(the full amount required by God). Let there be no withholding part of the price because the selfish heart desires to do this and will even take from the Lord that which He claims as His own.—“the tithes into the store-house, that there may be meat in mine house.” [Malachi 3:7-10.]

8LtMs, Ms 99, 1893, par. 16

God has made men His stewards, and from all to whom He has entrusted His gifts He asks for a return. As he has blessed us, he asks of us a gift to bless others. The revenue thus brought into His treasury, to supply the needs of His cause, He calls “meat in mine house.” [Verse 10.]

8LtMs, Ms 99, 1893, par. 21

The one to whom God has entrusted a large capital will not, if he loves and fears God, find it a burden to meet the demands of an enlightened conscience according to the claims of God. The rich will be tempted to indulge selfishness and avarice and to withhold from the Lord His own. But he who is true to God will, when tempted, answer to Satan, “It is written;” “Will a man rob God?” [Malachi 3:8.] “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” [Mark 8:36, 37.]

8LtMs, Ms 99, 1893, par. 23

In view of all the gifts of God to us, the question is asked, “Will a man rob God?” as though such a sin were not possible. But the Lord declares, “Ye have robbed me.” [Malachi 3:8.] God reads the covetous thought in every heart that purposes to withhold from Him. Those who are selfishly neglectful in paying their tithes and bringing their gifts and offerings to the treasury, God sees. The Lord Jehovah understands it all. As a book of remembrance is written before Him of them that fear the Lord, and that think upon His name, so there is a record kept of all who are appropriating to themselves the gifts which God entrusted to them to use for the salvation of souls.

8LtMs, Ms 99, 1893, par. 24

We should never forget that we are placed on trial in this world, to determine our fitness for the future life. None can enter heaven whose characters are defiled by the foul blot of selfishness. Therefore God tests us here by committing to us temporal possessions, that our use of these may show whether we can be entrusted with eternal riches. And the time is near when the case of every soul will be forever decided. “Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” [Verse 18.]

God declares, “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and the Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in; behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Malachi 3:1.] The Lord comes to His temple to find those who are sincere. He measures the worshipers. He knows those who are truehearted and self-sacrificing. “Who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth?” Who will stand in the day of investigation? This does not mean the time when the books are opened. It is a preparatory work. “For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fuller’s soap.” [Verse 2.]

14LtMs, Ms 100, 1899, par. 18

To those who have felt unconcerned, the Spirit comes as a reprover, and shows them that they need to do something to cleanse the temple. He investigates the temple and the worshipers thereof. “He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto God an offering in righteousness.” [Verse 3.] It will be as it was in the days of old, when the people were bringing their gifts for the building of the tabernacle. Their offerings were accepted, and they brought so much that the word went forth, Bring no more; there is enough. Even though an offering may be small, the Lord will receive it as wholly acceptable; and He can make it go a long way. “Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.” [Verse 4.]

And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vines cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 10-12.]

14LtMs, Ms 100, 1899, par. 22

God speaks to the class who are always complaining. “Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?” [Verses 13, 14.] Who asked them to walk mournfully? God wants us to walk in the light of the Sun of Righteousness. He wants His people to reflect the light of heaven. He wants us to lift up our heads and rejoice, because our redemption draweth nigh.

“And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” Thus the murmurers talk. But a different class is brought to view. “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels. And I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.” [Verses 15-18.]

“Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fuller’s soap.” [Malachi 3:1, 2.]

16LtMs, Ms 147, 1901, par. 4

“And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and they that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts. For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Even from the days of your fathers ye have gone away from mien ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?” [Verses 3-7.] As though they had no knowledge but that they had been doing just the best thing, and were living as well as they could.

16LtMs, Ms 147, 1901, par. 5

Now the explanation comes,—“Will a man rob God?” Would you do it? The Bible speaks of this as though it were an impossibility that any man should venture to do such a thing. “Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.” [Verse 8.]

16LtMs, Ms 147, 1901, par. 7

“Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.” [Verses 9-12.]

16LtMs, Ms 147, 1901, par. 44

This is our life insurance policy. Those who enter the kingdom of God must first co-operate with Him in the saving of their own souls and the souls of others. May God help us to go to work. To you who have been robbing God in tithes and offerings I would say, Do not think that you can come here to His house and receive His blessing. No; you will begin to murmur and complain, wondering why you are not exalted as others are. But of those who serve Him in sincerity, the word says, “They that feared the Lord spake often one to another, and the Lord harkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.” [Malachi 3:16.]

16LtMs, Ms 147, 1901, par. 45

Read the third chapter of Malachi, and think whether you wish to be found robbing God. God is in earnest with us. He expects us to help in planting His standard in places which have never heard the truth. He calls upon you to practice self-denial, that the work in foreign fields may go forward. From all over the world, calls for help are coming. Lay out no money unnecessarily. Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow the Master. You can never give Him as much as He has given you. He gave His life for you. What have you given for Him?

But who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth; for He is like a refiner’s fire, and like the fuller’s soap. Ye have said, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept His ordinances, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts. And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work righteousness are delivered; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.” [Verses 13-15.]

19LtMs, Lt 223, 1904, par. 30

There are those who have cherished these very sentiments. But now another side is presented. “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another; and the Lord harkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon His name. The closing words of this Scripture outline the experience that the people of God are yet to have. We have a wonderful future before us as a people. The promises of the third chapter of Malachi will be verified to the letter. The Lord’s people are to be channels through which His blessings are to flow for the upbuilding of the special work to be done in Washington. We call upon those who love God and fear His name to do zealously and unselfishly the work that He places before them.

Yesterday morning the strength came, and I awoke refreshed, as when I was a young girl. I felt the Spirit of the Lord upon me with healing power, and I am grateful to be able to stand here today and to see so many before me. I will not hold you longer, but I ask you to study carefully the third chapter of Malachi. I have presented it to you, not merely that you yourselves may obey the Word of God, but that you may be teachers, to instruct others how they may receive the blessing of God. That is our calling; we are to be educators. And when we all come into harmonious action, we shall certainly see of the salvation of God. God has promised to bless us financially, and He will bless us spiritually, if we will deal faithfully with Him.

God Tests Those Whom He Values

CCh 54.7

To men whom God designs shall fill responsible positions, He in mercy reveals their hidden defects, that they may look within and examine critically the complicated emotions and exercises of their own hearts, and detect that which is wrong; thus they may modify their dispositions and refine their manners. The Lord in His providence brings men where He can test their moral powers and reveal their motives of action, that they may improve what is right in themselves and put away that which is wrong. God would have His servants become acquainted with the moral machinery of their own hearts. In order to bring this about, He often permits the fire of affliction to assail them that they may become purified. “But who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth? for He is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: and He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.” Malachi 3:2, 3 422Testimonies for the Church 4:84.

We have need to be alarmed because selfishness and covetousness are becoming a ruling power among us, and the Lord is displeased. The consciences of many are like India rubber. Men can be bought and sold by the highest bidder. When such men are weighed in the balances of the sanctuary, they are found wanting, for conscientiousness, honor, integrity, and fidelity are lacking. The sin of bribery is becoming so common, that the moral senses of many are perverted by this unholy practice. The time of testing is upon us, and many hold the truth in unrighteousness. They do not place themselves where they can best glorify God, but best please and glorify themselves. When it serves their purpose they are the most zealous advocates of the truth; but when the test of trial comes upon them, they shrink under the measuring line of God. Malachi describes the process of trial that shall fit the people of God to abide the day of His coming. “But who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth? for He is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness” (Malachi 3:2, 3). This is the work the Lord will do throughout our institutions. The apostle saw in prophetic vision what should exist near the close of time, and if our hearts were not calloused by sin and iniquity, we should discern and sense the prophetic picture held up to our view. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce-breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5. I cry out in remorse of soul, But who shall be able to stand when Christ shall come? “But who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth? for He is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness.” Malachi 3:2, 3. Chapter 29—Satan’s Enmity Against the Law

PP 339.1

The time is not far distant when God will arise to vindicate His insulted authority. “The Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.” Isaiah 26:21. “But who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth?” Malachi 3:2. The people of Israel, because of their sinfulness, were forbidden to approach the mount when God was about to descend upon it to proclaim His law, lest they should be consumed by the burning glory of His presence. If such manifestations of His power marked the place chosen for the proclamation of God’s law, how terrible must be His tribunal when He comes for the execution of these sacred statutes. How will those who have trampled upon His authority endure His glory in the great day of final retribution? The terrors of Sinai were to represent to the people the scenes of the judgment. The sound of a trumpet summoned Israel to meet with God. The voice of the Archangel and the trump of God shall summon, from the whole earth, both the living and the dead to the presence of their Judge. The Father and the Son, attended by a multitude of angels, were present upon the mount. At the great judgment day Christ will come “in the glory of His Father with His angels.” Matthew 16:27. He shall then sit upon the throne of His glory, and before Him shall be gathered all nations.

PP 341.3

“Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not.” Malachi 3:18. “Hearken unto Me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is My law.” “Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, ... thou shalt no more drink it again.” “I, even I, am He that comforteth you.” Isaiah 51:7, 22, 12. “For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.” Isaiah 54:10.

“And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.” Malachi 3:3, 4. This is the process, the refining, purifying process, which is to be carried on by the Lord of hosts. The work is most trying to the soul, but it is only through this process that the rubbish and defiling impurities can be removed. Our trials are all necessary to bring us close to our heavenly Father, in obedience to His will, that we may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness.

In the evening the subject of the school was brought up and a call made for means. Elder Starr led out. W. C. White followed. I spoke about thirty minutes in reference to the establishment of our first school in Battle Creek, Michigan. All seemed deeply interested, but nine o’clock came; and we thought we must close and not leave a bad example for our ministers, to be regardless of the hours. Subscription papers were circulated and seventy-five pounds were pledged. There are quite a number who wanted to think about it before pledging, and as we did not want to force anyone to pledge unless he was perfectly willing, we think it was a wise thing to take time to consider [in order] that all thank offerings and tithes and gifts to our Maker may come from a pure, thankful heart. We think there will be raised all that is called for, but let them [give] their offerings to God as freewill offerings and not by compulsion.

Chapter 166—To O. A. Olsen

1888 1402.1

God’s servants are not to be treated as the servants of the Conference, to be bound and released at their pleasure. From the first word to the last this book should be our lesson sheet, in the home life, in the church, and before the world. God calls upon you, “Why halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord God serve him, if Baal, then serve him.” God will not approve or bless the authorities at Battle Creek in turning things upside down, departing from the faith once delivered to the saints.

There were times when the enemy came in great power to destroy: from hour to hour the men of faith had to depend on the blessings that came from God. The great topic of interest was, how to save the souls of those that were ready to perish. The great plan of salvation drew men close together in unity and love. The social intercourse was profitable. The love of the Redeemer, and the ways and means of saving perishing souls was the burden of our hearts. Holiness, and the author and finisher of our faith were the interesting subjects. Read Malachi 3:16, 17.

I have a word from the Lord to you: “I will approach nigh unto you in judgement.” [Malachi 3:5.] Truth and righteousness are exiled from the home, saying, “I want not Thy ways, O, God. I want to follow my own impulse. I care not to respect the restraint the service of God brings. I want not the yoke Jesus placed upon my neck.”
