I was referred by my Guide to John 6:63, 64, 65. “The words that I speak unto you,” Christ declared, “they are spirit and they are life.” [Verse 63.] The true children of God will not manufacture plans that are directly contrary to the principles Christ has enjoined upon all. “This do,” He said, “and ye shall live.” What was this matter of such great importance? “A certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, What shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering, said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.” [Luke 10:25-28.]John 6:63-69

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.... From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. John 6:63-69.John 6:64

But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. John 6:64.CC 285.2
While Jesus was preparing the disciples for their ordination, one who had not been summoned urged his presence among them. It was Judas Iscariot, a man who professed to be a follower of Christ.... Judas believed Jesus to be the Messiah; and by joining the apostles, he hoped to secure a high position in the new kingdom....CC 285.3
The disciples were anxious that Judas should become one of their number. He was of commanding appearance, a man of keen discernment and executive ability, and they commended him to Jesus as one who would greatly assist Him in His work.... The after history of Judas would show them the danger of allowing any worldly consideration to have weight in deciding the fitness of men for the work of God....CC 285.4
Yet when Judas joined the disciples, he was not insensible to the beauty of the character of Christ. He felt the influence of that divine power which was drawing souls to the Saviour.... The Saviour read the heart of Judas; He knew the depths of iniquity to which, unless delivered by the grace of God, Judas would sink. In connecting this man with Himself, He placed him where he might, day by day, be brought in contact with the outflowing of His own unselfish love. If he would open his heart to Christ, divine grace would banish the demon of selfishness, and even Judas might become a subject of the kingdom of God.CC 285.5
God takes men as they are ... and trains them for His service, if they will be disciplined and learn of Him. They are not chosen because they are perfect, but notwithstanding their imperfections, that through the knowledge and practice of the truth, through the grace of Christ, they may become transformed into His image.CC 285.6
Judas had the same opportunities as had the other disciples. He listened to the same precious lessons. But the practice of the truth, which Christ required, was at variance with the desires and purposes of Judas, and he would not yield his ideas in order to receive wisdom from Heaven.10Ibid., 293-295.John 6:65

When so many of Christ’s followers left Him, and the Saviour asked the twelve, “Will ye also go away?” Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.” [John 6:67, 68.] It filled Christ’s heart with sorrow to see anyone leaving Him, because He knew that faith in His name and in His mission is man’s only hope. This desertion of His followers was a humiliation to Him. Oh, how little human beings know of the sorrow that filled the heart of infinite love when such things took place. No one in the world ever longed more earnestly for appreciation and fellowship than did Christ. He hungered for sympathy. His heart was filled with a longing desire that human beings might appreciate the gift of God to the world and honor Him by believing His words and speaking forth His praise. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]20LtMs, Lt 171, 1905, par. 10
How regretful were the words, “Will ye also go away?” [John 6:67.] They touched the hearts of all the disciples but one. That one was Judas. He had a heart only for money. His highest desire was to be the greatest.20LtMs, Lt 171, 1905, par. 11
Well might the disciples say, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.” [Verse 68.] Consider what Christ was. The Son of the Highest, yet a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Have we experienced the blessing that comes from trusting Him with the whole heart and honoring Him by ever showing our love and devotion to Him? Christ is hungry for fruit—fruit that will appease His hunger of soul in our behalf. It is His desire that we bear “much fruit.” [John 15:5, 8.]John 6:67-69

In hours when clouds encompass the soul, Christ is not far from every one of us. To whom shall we go if not to the Sinbearer, the great Healer of human woe? “Thou hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). There is joy for all who put their trust in Him, and exercise the faith that works by love and purifies the soul. Jesus says, My joy shall be in you, and your joy shall be full (John 15:11). “Without faith it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11:6). Those who are self-seeking will not be blessed. But when men accept positions in the office, a place that God has appointed to be a great center of light and wisdom and purity, there is much need that they should often engage in earnest prayer, for there is much work to be done. They should not neglect spiritual and eternal things; for thus they would be separating themselves from the Source of all light and strength. If they undertake to do their work intelligently, realizing that it is God’s work, the language of their hearts will be, “Lord, to whom shall we go but unto Thee? Those who entertain this belief do not know what they are about. They are cherishing a love for darkness, and just as long as these Christless souls are retained in positions of responsibility, the cause of God is imperilled. They are in danger of fastening themselves so firmly with the dark leader of all rebellion, that they will never see light; and the longer they are retained, the more hopeless is their chance of receiving Christ, or of having a knowledge of the true God. How uncertain they make everything that is spiritual and progressive in the truth. Under the influence of their leader, they become more and more determined to work against Christ. But through good and bad report, through darkness, through all the antagonism of the agencies of Satan, the Sun of Righteousness calmly shines on, searching out evil, repressing sin, and reviving the spirit of the humble and contrite ones. “Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” [John 6:68.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Why not make God your confidence, saying, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Let us no longer turn from the light which lighteth every man to the uncertain wisdom of those who have no power except that which they first receive from God. After the hymn, they went out. Through the crowded streets they made their way, passing out of the city gate toward the Mount of Olives. Slowly they proceeded, each busy with his own thoughts. As they began to descend toward the mount, Jesus said, in a tone of deepest sadness, “All ye shall be offended because of Me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.” Matthew 26:31. The disciples listened in sorrow and amazement. They remembered how in the synagogue at Capernaum, when Christ spoke of Himself as the bread of life, many had been offended, and had turned away from Him. But the twelve had not shown themselves unfaithful. Peter, speaking for his brethren, had then declared his loyalty to Christ. Then the Saviour had said, “Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?” John 6:70. In the upper chamber Jesus said that one of the twelve would betray Him, and that Peter would deny Him. But now His words include them all.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

All the little <and large> trouble and crosses, the difficulties and hindrances to the advancement of the gospel, Judas interpreted as being an evidence against its truthfulness. He would introduce texts of Scripture that had no connection with the themes of truth that Jesus was seeking to impress upon the minds and hearts of the disciples. And these texts, separated from their connection and placed where they had no appropriate bearing or force, confused their minds and increased the discouragements that were constantly pressing in with the suggestions of the scribes and Pharisees. The sayings of the Pharisees also were so used by him to encourage unbelief and lessen the force of truth upon the minds of the disciples, that Christ declared of him that he had a devil. [John 6:70.] Yet all this was done in such a way <as to leave the impression he was conscientiously righteous,> that while the disciples were searching for evidence to confirm the words of the great Teacher, Judas would lead them almost imperceptibly on another track.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

When Christ revealed to Peter the time of trial and suffering that was just before Him, and Peter replied, “Be it far from Thee, Lord; this shall not be unto Thee,” the Saviour commanded, “Get thee behind Me, Satan.” [Matthew 16:21-23.] Satan was speaking through Peter, making him act the part of the tempter. Satan’s presence was unsuspected by Peter, but Christ could detect the presence of the deceiver; and in His rebuke to Peter, He addressed the real foe. On one occasion, speaking to the twelve, and referring to Judas, Christ declared, “One of you is a devil.” [John 6:70.] Often in the days of His earthly ministry the Saviour met His adversary in human form, when Satan as an unclean spirit took possession of men. “The words that I speak unto you,” said Christ, “they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). Jeremiah testifies to the Word of God, saying, “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.” There is divine healing in God’s Word, which the so-called wise and prudent cannot experience, but which is revealed to babes. “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psalm 119:130). If this Word is enshrined in the heart, it becomes the treasure-house of the mind, from which we bring forth things new and old. We no longer find pleasure in thinking of the common things of earth, but say, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (verse 105).—The Review and Herald, May 4, 1897.Counsels on Diet and Foods

The ideas of our brethren are altogether too narrow. They expect but little. Their faith is small. A paper published upon the Pacific Coast would give strength and importance to the message. The light God has given us is not worth much to the world unless it can be seen by being presented before them. I declare to you our vision must be extended. We see things nigh but not afar off. Satan will have plenty of difficulties to be presented in obstructing our advance but as the children of Israel came up to the Red Sea and were still led and directed to “Go Forward,” the rod of God in the hands of Moses by the direction of God parted the waters. “The excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.” “The words that I speak unto you,” said Jesus, “they are spirit, and they are life.” “This is life eternal, that they should know Thee the only true God, and Him whom Thou didst send.” Ecclesiastes 7:12; John 6:63; 17:3, R.V.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

He who accepts the truth in sincerity, who eats the flesh and drinks the blood of the Son of God, has eternal life. “The words that I speak unto you,” said Jesus, “They are spirit and they are life.” John 6:63. When the receiver of truth co-operates with the Holy Spirit, he will go weighted with a burden of the message to souls; he will never be merely a sermonizer. He will enter heart and soul into the great work of seeking and saving that which is lost; practicing the religion of Christ, he will accomplish a work in winning souls.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Brother Blakeley is in danger of taking positions that will not lead to beneficial results, either to himself or to others. He encourages controversy and discussion, and those who do not know the truth but who serve God according to the light they have, are likely to become afraid of the truth and those who advocate it. The very best and only safe course for this brother to take is to pray more and talk less. He needs to eat of the flesh and drink of the blood of the Son of God. “The flesh profiteth nothing,” says Christ, “the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” [John 6:63.] All of you, especially the one named, need a deeper and more thorough experience in the school of Christ. “Learn of me,” says Christ, “for I am meek and lowly in heart.” [Matthew 11:29.] The lesson which every Christian should learn is that of the meekness and gentleness of Christ.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

If the ministers of Christ would come to the people under the full influence of the meekness and lowliness of Christ, and grow into His stature, what power would attend their labors; impressions of Christ would be stamped on minds and characters; impressions would be made from association, that work deeper and deeper into the mind, making for themselves an abiding place, changing the soul after the likeness of Christ, thus voicing Christ’s words, “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” [John 6:63.] See 2 Corinthians 3:18. 2 Corinthians 4:3-7.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

I long for the Holy Spirit more and more to pervade my soul and guide me and work me. When we give up ourselves to be worked by the Holy Spirit, we shall bear the mold of Christ. “I shall be satisfied, when I awake with thy likeness.” [Psalm 17:15.] Every soul truly converted is a living active worker, a missionary for God, else what was he converted to and from what? There can be no idler in the Lord’s vineyard. “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” [Psalm 119:130.] Those who are not self-exalted, those who will feel their ignorance and learn at the feet of Jesus, those who are not alone hearers but doers of His Word, eat His flesh and drink His blood. “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life”—eternal life. I feel sorry that poor souls, failing to find relief, appeal to Sister White. I want them to have confidence that the shepherds of the flock will care for the flock of God. Every minister of Christ who does not have the precious love of Jesus in the heart will reveal the fact. The Lord Jesus has given to every man precious lessons of instruction in His Holy Word. The Lord Jesus is our Pattern. The impress of the image of Christ will be manifest upon the entire character of those who yield themselves to Him. Then the mental and physical powers will be renewed day by day, for the true believer is daily eating of the flesh and drinking of the blood of the Son of God. Jesus says, “The flesh profiteth nothing; the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.” [John 6:63.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Do not suppose that during the discussion all recognized that the impress of the likeness of Christ was revealed in the human advocate of truth? Those who have the eternal Word written upon the heart by the Holy Spirit are God’s witnesses. The Word living in them is ready for use. “The words that I speak unto you,” said Jesus, “they are spirit, and they are life.” [John 6:63.] Now, my brother, take the Word now, treasure it up. It is through the Word that the Spirit manifests its quickening power, as it is appropriated in the inner life. Oh, consider that the Lord has greatly honored you by making you His witness to present pure and unadulterated truth to His people, and that the grace of Christ enabled you in your speech to honor God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

God has claims upon us individually, and in our short probationary life, He requires us to put into exercise the powers He has granted us, to love one another as He has loved us. We are not to labor merely keeping this short lifetime in view, but to act as if in sight of eternity, to act as if the curtain between us and the universe of heaven were withdrawn, and we could, with the eye of faith, see Christ looking upon us and encouraging us in our work. Study diligently the lessons He gave to His disciples, for He declared, “The words I speak unto you, they are Spirit and they are life.” [John 6:63.] There is marrow and fatness in these lessons. Christ has prayed to His Father for His disciples. He said, “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word.” [John 17:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

We are to feed upon Christ, the living Bread from heaven. Our souls are to thirst for the waters of salvation, and we are to study the Scriptures, and practice the truths they teach in our daily life. Those who do this will reveal the fact that they are feasting upon the Bread of life, eating the flesh of the Son of God, and drinking daily of the waters of salvation. If we closely study the words of Christ, and take heed to His lessons, we shall feed upon His flesh, for the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Christ says, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.” [John 6:63.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

We require a better, deeper, more lovely teaching than man can give us. “My words,” saith Christ, “are spirit and life.” [John 6:63.] The truth enshrined in the heart becomes a vitalizing power, and we cannot be too urgent in impressing this upon human minds. There is absolutely no panoply but truth. The only dishonor we should fear is rebellion against God. Make sure we are working on Christ’s side, cling closely to the Bible for it alone will ennoble and purify, and when we are like-minded with our God, we shall be strong in His strength. “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth.” [John 1:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)
