“All that the Father giveth Me shall come to Me; and him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent Me, that of all which He hath given Me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.” [John 6:37-39.] Mark these words, for they have a deep meaning and should inspire every heart with an earnest desire to conform his will to the will of God. “And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” [Verse 40.]18LtMs, Ms 65, 1903, par. 10
Satan was ever ready to put unbelief into the hearts of the Jews in Christ’s day. “And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that He saith, I came down from heaven? Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent Me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto Me. Not that any man hath seen the Father, save He which is of God, He hath seen the Father.” [Verses 42-46.]John 6:37-54

The Saviour said, “All that the Father hath given Me shall come to Me; and him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent Me, that of all which He hath given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.” [John 6:37-39.] The Lord has determined to take a people to Himself according to His own divine wisdom; not because they are imperfect and defective in character, but because through His grace He can correct their errors and remedy their mistakes. He can instruct them by His Holy Spirit. What a mercy it is that the Lord’s purpose will be accomplished in behalf of all who believe in Christ as their personal Saviour. He will fulfill His purpose, and the grace of Jesus Christ will make every believing soul complete in Him.9LtMs, Ms 27, 1894, par. 28
My brother, the Lord has revealed to me the fact that you need this experience in order to make straight paths for your feet amid the perils of these last days. God calls upon you to give the Holy Spirit a doorway into your mind and heart. “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” [John 6:53, 54.]John 6:37-63

Our ministers must cease to dwell upon their peculiar ideas, with the feeling, “You must see the point as I do, or you cannot be saved.” Away with this egotism! The great work to be done in every case is to win souls to Christ. Men must see Jesus on the cross; they must look and live. It is not your ideas they must feed upon, but it is the flesh and blood of the Son of God. He says, “My flesh is meat indeed.” “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:55, 63. The soul that accepts Jesus places himself under the care of the Great Physician, and let men be careful how they come between the patient and the Physician who discerns all the needs of the soul.3MR 32.3
Christ has undertaken the work of saving all who trust in Him for salvation. He sees the wrongs that need to be righted, the evils that need to be repressed. He came to seek and save that which was lost. “Him that cometh to Me,” He says, “I will in no wise cast out” [John 6:37]. Through the goodness and mercy of Christ the sinner is to be restored to the divine favor. God in Christ is daily beseeching men to be reconciled to God. With outstretched arms He is ready to receive and welcome, not only the sinner, but the prodigal. His love, manifested on Calvary, is the sinner’s assurance of acceptance, peace and love. Teach these things in the simplest form, that the sin-darkened soul may see the light shining from the cross of Calvary.Selected Messages Book 1

Few realize what they lose by not searching the Scriptures. All who search the inspired Word for themselves will gain a knowledge of a personal, abiding Saviour; and their Christian experience will not depend upon feeling, but upon the Word of the living God. “The words I speak unto you,” said Jesus, “they are Spirit, and they are life.” [John 6:63.] And the more one studies the Word of God, the more that Word takes possession of his mind, and he sees deeper and deeper into the divine purpose.11LtMs, Lt 91, 1896, par. 15
Well may our hearts turn to our Redeemer with the most perfect trust when we think of what He has done for us, even when we were sinners. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Through faith we may rest in His love. “Whosoever cometh unto me,” He says, “I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.] It would be a terrible thing to stand before God clothed in sinful garments, with His eye reading every secret of our lives. But through the efficacy of Christ’s sacrifice we may stand before God pure and spotless, with our sins pardoned and atoned for. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” [1 John 1:9.]11LtMs, Lt 91, 1896, par. 16
The redeemed sinner, clothed in the white robes of Christ’s righteousness, may stand in the presence of a sin-hating God, made perfect by the virtue and merits of his Saviour. “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the Sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” [John 1:12.] Keep your eye fixed upon Jesus. Think of Him as your friend. Through His rich grace He can save to the uttermost all who come to Him. He tells us in His Word that He is the “living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread he shall live for ever.” [John 6:51.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

He who sees himself as a sinner, with no cloak for his sin, who sees that he is corrupting soul, body, and spirit before God, becomes alarmed lest he be eternally separated from the kingdom of heaven. He realizes his diseased condition, and finds healing in Christ who has promised, “Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.] And God puts upon the repenting one the robe of Christ’s righteousness, and the angels of heaven rejoice over the one soul saved.14LtMs, Ms 127, 1899, par. 44
The Word of God is plainly expressed in His law. But only those who eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God can understand that Word to the saving of their souls. “The flesh profiteth nothing,” Christ said, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” [John 6:63.] No man can believe the Word of God, believing it to be inspired of God, without himself catching the inspiration of the Spirit that inspired the Word. A glory will flash before his eyes. He will learn the mysteries of heaven, and will unite in things unseen by mortal eyes. Perfect obedience to the Word will bring a sweetness, an assurance and confidence in God that cannot be described.John 6:37-66

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us His flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He that eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth Me, even he shall live by Me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live forever.” [John 6:37-39, 47-58.]17LtMs, Lt 208a, 1902, par. 20
These words were spoken before a large congregation. “These things said He in the synagogue, as He taught at Capernaum. Many therefore of His disciples when they heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?” And “from that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him.” [Verses 59, 60, 66.]17LtMs, Lt 208a, 1902, par. 21
These words of Christ are true today. And many who have not been worked by the Holy Spirit, no more understand their import than did Christ’s disciples. Christ did not utter these words in a careless manner. He well knew that as a result of these statements, many who had been following Him would turn away, complaining, “This is a hard saying; who can hear it?” [Verse 60.]John 6:37-71

When Christ declared, “Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me,” He explained the meaning of His words. He said, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit and they are life.” [John 6:54-57, 63.] It is in eating the words of Christ that we eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God. In obedience to His Word, we become partakers of His divine nature in the same way in which we are composed of the food we eat. Those who eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God become one in spiritual life with Christ. No human being can be nourished by the food which another eats. He must eat for himself.12LtMs, Ms 25, 1897, par. 14
God has sent His Son to communicate His own life to humanity. Christ declares, “I live by the Father,” My life and His being one. [Verse 57.] “No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” [John 1:18.] “For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.” [John 5:26, 27.] The head of every man is Christ, as the head of Christ is God. “And ye are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.” [1 Corinthians 3:23.]12LtMs, Ms 25, 1897, par. 19
We read that many of His disciples were offended at His words. This was because of the earthliness of their minds which made His words insufferable to them, and they misconstrued His words. “This,” they said, “is an hard saying, who can hear it?” [John 6:60.] It is only those who do Him service from pure, loving hearts, that can receive His Word. He continues, “What and if ye see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing; the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.” [Verses 62, 63.] In giving His flesh and His blood for the life of the world, Christ gives eternal life to all who will receive it in faith. “But from that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.” [Verse 66.]12LtMs, Ms 25, 1897, par. 20
Christ will receive all who will come unto Him by faith. Yet thousands are perishing in their sins, heedless and reckless in their disobedience of God’s law. It is the loving and obedient heart that will come unto Him, and His promise is, “Him that cometh to me, I will in nowise cast out.” [Verse 37.] Many in their blindness will become offended because they are meeting a false standard.12LtMs, Ms 25, 1897, par. 21
“From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.” [Verse 66.] These men had joined themselves to Christ as learners. But their carnal mind interpreted the figure Christ presented as though He meant it literally. They were gross in their understanding. This we shall see fulfilled in every age of the world. Jesus knew all about the disaffection. He said, “But there are some of you that believe not.” [Verse 64.]12LtMs, Ms 25, 1897, par. 23
Turning to His disciples, Jesus said, “Will ye also go away? Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus answered them, Have I not chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.” [John 6:67-71.]12LtMs, Ms 25, 1897, par. 25
As long as time shall last, the wheat will be found among the tares, and the tares among the wheat. By their fruit they will be known. The desire of the disciples was to be with Christ, “To whom,” said they, “shall we go?” [Verse 68.] Shall we go back to seek counsel of the formalist? We cannot understand why so many go away. The thought arose in their minds that Christ had made a mistake in speaking words that would offend. These disciples, they thought, might have been held if he had not spoken so decidedly in regard to partaking of His flesh and blood. “But,” said they, “Shall we leave the great teacher? The scribes and Pharisees have dealt most unfairly with Christ. Shall we take sides with them in lifeless formalism, in teaching for doctrine the commandments of men? Shall we teach the tradition of the elders?”John 6:38

Satan Rules the Will That’s Not Under God’s Control—Christ declared, “I came … not to do My own will, but the will of Him that sent Me” (John 6:38). His will was put into active exercise to save the souls of men. His human will was nourished by the divine. His servants today would do well to ask themselves, “What kind of will am I individually cultivating? Have I been gratifying my own desires, confirming myself in selfishness and obstinacy?” If we are doing this, we are in great peril, for Satan will always rule the will that is not under the control of the Spirit of God. Three times was that prayer heard. But he consented <to drink the cup.> Why? He became the substitute and surety for man. He could have had legions of angels <at His side in a moment,> but no, He must tread the wine press alone. The satanic horrors of darkness were there, but He was victorious. The yoke that binds to service is the law of God. The great law of love revealed in Eden, proclaimed upon Sinai, and in the new covenant written in the heart, is that which binds the human worker to the will of God. If we were left to follow our own inclinations, to go just where our will would lead us, we should fall into Satan’s ranks and become possessors of his attributes. Therefore God confines us to His will, which is high, and noble, and elevating. He desires that we shall patiently and wisely take up the duties of service. The yoke of service Christ Himself has borne in humanity. He said, “I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy law is within My heart.” Psalm 40:8. “I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me.” John 6:38. Love for God, zeal for His glory, and love for fallen humanity, brought Jesus to earth to suffer and to die. This was the controlling power of His life. Christ expects us to keep the will of God ever before us, making it our rule of life, committing the keeping of our souls to God as unto a faithful Creator. We are not to allow our own will to control, for we have been bought with a price. We are to keep ever in view the glory of God, for we are Christ’s representatives. Every purpose, every plan, every object, must bow to the supreme will. “I came” Christ said, “not to do mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me. My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me, and to finish His work.” [John 6:38; 4:34.] In the garden of Gethsemane, His soul enshrouded with darkness, the thought before Him that His life of humiliation and suffering was to be ended by an ignominious death, He looked to God, exclaiming, “Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not My will, but Thine be done.” [Matthew 26:39; Luke 22:42.]John 6:38-63

I have been instructed to say to all, Will you learn of the great Teacher? Will you drink of the pure waters of Lebanon, or will you drink of the murky human channel and communicate human theories? Do these satisfy the soul? “It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God.” [John 6:45.] Then if the human agent will accept this higher education, he will not become subject to the fickle changes of men. Human judgment is not infallible.20LtMs, Ms 171, 1905, par. 2
“Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto Me. Not that any man hath seen the Father, save He which is of God, He hath seen the Father. Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life.” John 6:45-47. How many really and genuinely believe, as little children believe in their earthly parents?20LtMs, Ms 171, 1905, par. 3
“I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if a man eat of this bread,” meaning spiritual life of Jesus Christ, “he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. He that eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him.” Verses 48-56.20LtMs, Ms 171, 1905, par. 5
“These things said He in the synagogue, as He taught in Capernaum. Many therefore of His disciples, when they heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?” Verses 59, 60. Who can receive it? I am instructed to say there are some Bible teachers who have the same thoughts in their hearts. They have not an abiding Christ. They have theories, but not a living experience; therefore they are in spiritual starvation because they do not eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God. “He that eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him.” [Verse 56.] There are many who are very active, full of zeal where and when they desire to do something, but are they in Christ and Christ in them? Are they patient in seeking to know the will of Christ and studying His life and His character? He is the light of heaven that has come into our world, and we must be like Christ if we shall ever be so highly favored as to see Him as He is. There is a clear understanding, a clear, sanctified perception of what it means to co-operate with Christ, to be in partnership with the Light of the world, catching the bright beams of the Sun of righteousness and, divested of every selfish motive, becoming one with Christ. Thus work out your own salvation upon sure and never-failing lines, with fear and with trembling, “for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” [Philippians 2:12, 13.]20LtMs, Ms 171, 1905, par. 9
If you are learning of Christ, you will be imparting constantly that which you receive in much prayer and sure faith at the footstool of the throne of God and the Lamb, from whence flows the life-giving waters. Then give expression to your thanksgiving to God because He has helped you to see that you were a little child. Never, never encourage that ruling authority. That education which leads men to honor men and depend on men dishonors God and enfeebles your whole religious experience. “When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples murmured at it, He said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where He was before?” John 6:61, 62. He would convey to them that He would receive greater honor than He now claimed as being the bread of life. What will you say when I shall ascend up where I was before? “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” Verse 63.20LtMs, Ms 171, 1905, par. 18
Christ is speaking to those who have had evidence of His Messiahship. “For I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent Me, that of all which He hath given Me I shall lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:38-40.20LtMs, Ms 171, 1905, par. 19
Here is faith. Then comes in the natural man, the unconverted man. “The Jews then murmured at Him, because He said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that He saith, I came down from heaven?” Verses 41, 42. In our day we see the same darkness that existed when Christ in person came into our world at His appointed time. “Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent Me draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day.” Verses 43, 44.John 6:39-40

The Scripture reading, by Elder George B. There are many mysteries which I do not seek to understand or to explain; they are too high for me, and too high for you. On some of these points, silence is golden. Piety, devotion, sanctification of soul, body, and spirit—this is essential for us all. “This is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent” [John 17:3]. “This is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life” [John 6:40].Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Power will be given to every man and woman who will eat of the bread that came down from heaven. O, cannot we take this in? Cannot we comprehend it? Why is our imagination so dull? “This is the will of him that sent me,” said Christ, “that every one (how comprehensive, how far-reaching) that seeth the Son, and believeth on him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” [John 6:40.] If this, the life of Christ, be in us, what may we not accomplish in His name? “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” [John 1:12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Are we prepared to meet the issue? “And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which seeth the Son and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” [John 6:40.] “I am the Resurrection and the Life: he that believeth on Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die.” [John 11:25, 26.] “I go to prepare a place for you” (who believe in Me, and are imitators of Me). “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am there ye may be also.” [John 14:2, 3.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

His life is hid with Christ in God, and he is persuaded that He who has conquered death is able to keep that which is committed to His trust. His mind grasps the Saviour’s promise, “I will raise him up at the last day” (John 6:40). His thoughts and hopes are centered on the second coming of his Lord. “I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40. Christ became one flesh with us, in order that we might become one spirit with Him. It is by virtue of this union that we are to come forth from the grave—not merely as a manifestation of the power of Christ, but because, through faith, His life has become ours. Those who see Christ in His true character, and receive Him into the heart, have everlasting life. It is through the Spirit that Christ dwells in us; and the Spirit of God, received into the heart by faith, is the beginning of the life eternal.89The Desire of Ages, 388.The Story of Redemption

Christ is our Deliverer. He exclaims, “I will ransom them from the power of the grave. I will redeem them from death. O death, I will be thy plagues! O grave, I will be thy destruction!” [Hosea 13:14.] Thrice in rapid succession He exclaimed, “I will raise them up at the last day.” [John 6:40, 44, 54.] Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of that day, saying, “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of His saints, to execute judgment upon all.” [Jude 14, 15.] And Solomon, when in the capacity of a preacher he tried to present the strongest motive to holy obedience—the motive that was above that was above all estimate in view of the judgment to come—said, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. Jesus is to be our only trust and confidence. His righteousness is to be ours, that we may stand in assurance before Him. But though we go forth proclaiming the words of life, Christ says, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” [John 6:44.] As God’s agent to reach humanity, man has a part of act but Jesus does the work. Man has no power to transform man. It is the Spirit of Christ diffused through the entrusted powers of men that sheds light into the darkened understanding, assailing the strongholds of error, and bringing into captivity to Himself the heart that has been in the service of sin.John 6:44-54

The truth which Peter had confessed is the foundation of the believer’s faith. It is that which Christ Himself has declared to be eternal life. But the possession of this knowledge was no ground for self-glorification. Through no wisdom or goodness of his own had it been revealed to Peter. Never can humanity, of itself, attain to a knowledge of the divine. “It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?” Job 11:8. Only the spirit of adoption can reveal to us the deep things of God, which “eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man.” “God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:9, 10. “The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him;” and the fact that Peter discerned the glory of Christ was an evidence that he had been “taught of God.” Psalm 25:14; John 6:45. Some one has said that there is no more need of schools, for the Bible has said, “They shall all be taught of God.” [John 6:45.] Yes, the Lord will teach us, but it will be through His appointed means, for He has given “some, apostles; some, prophets; and some, evangelists; some, pastors and teachers, for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come in the unity of the faith, unto the knowledge of the Son of God unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” [Ephesians 4:11-13.] The teaching is to continue, the work of caring for the sick is to go on till the close of time. The Lord has His appointed, human agencies, and they work in harmony with Christ in saving the souls of men. Those who teach the truth must learn meekness and lowliness of heart in the school of Christ. This is the most important lesson to be learned by those who would impart truth to others. The most powerful preaching of the Word will avail nothing unless the Spirit teaches and enlightens those who hear. Unless the Spirit works with and through the human agent, souls will not be saved or characters transformed by the reading of the Scriptures. The planning and devising that is done in connection with the work should not be of a character to draw attention to self. The Word is a power, a sword in the hand of the human agent. But the Holy Spirit is its efficiency, its vital power in impressing the mind. “They shall all be taught of God.” [John 6:45.] It is God that causeth the light to shine into the hearts of men. All the grace of God is given to every individual who teaches the truth, if he himself will be a learner in the school of Christ. That meekness and lowliness which is revealed in the character of Christ is the most important lesson he can daily and hourly learn. It is the Spirit itself that teaches and enlightens. The most powerful preaching of the Word, the reading of the Scriptures, will not be able to transform the character and save souls unless the Spirit works with and through the human agents. The planning and devising must not be of a character to draw attention to self. The Word is a power, a sword, in the hands of the human agent, but the Holy Spirit in its power is the efficiency to impress the mind. “They shall be all taught of God.” [John 6:45.] It is God that causes the light to shine into hearts. Christ is our only hope. We may look to Him, for He is our Saviour. We may take Him at His word and make Him our dependence. He knows just the help we need, and we can safely put our trust in Him. If we depend on human wisdom to guide us, we shall find ourselves on the losing side. But we may come direct to the Lord Jesus; for He has said, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” [Matthew 11:28, 29.] It is our privilege to be taught of Him who said, “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.” [John 6:53.]22LtMs, Ms 29, 1907, par. 14

Those who receive and practice the truth will be as lights shining amidst the darkness of the world. Their lives reveal virtues that are a savor of life unto life. This is what Christ means when He says, “It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore, that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto Me. How is it with us individually? Christ came to our world and clothed His divinity with humanity, that His humanity might touch and uplift humanity, while with His divine arm He might grasp the throne of the Infinite. Thus He linked finite man with the infinite God. “He that believeth on me,” He says, “hath everlasting life.” [John 6:47.] To believe on Christ means to put on Christ, to be united to Christ as the branch is united to the vine, and as the limb is united to the body.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6
Chapter 6—Less Preaching, More Teaching

If the man who feels that he is called of God to be a minister will humble himself and learn of Christ, he will become a true teacher. What we need in our camp meetings is a ministry vivified by the Holy Spirit. There must be less sermonizing and more tact to educate the people in practical religion. They must be impressed with the fact that Christ is salvation to all who believe. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. There are grand themes on which the gospel minister may dwell. Christ has said: “He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life.” John 6:47.John 6:47-55

The study of the Bible was made the foundation of all the studies. It was indeed like eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of God. “My flesh,” said Christ “is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.” “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” “This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. “Verily, verily, I say unto you,” Christ declared, “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life” (John 6:47). Oh, how few there are who reveal in their lives the principles of this life! They profess to believe the most sacred truth ever given to mortals, but in their lives they dishonor God. He that “eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him” (verses 54-56) ... It behooves us to live in the fear and love of God. God is supreme, and He cooperates with those who represent Christ in life and character, those who are kind, thoughtful, self-denying, and self-sacrificing. Christ says, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:14) (Letter 63, 1903).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

The apostle cannot find words to express the love of God, but he calls upon the world to behold it. The world cannot comprehend such marvelous love. It is beholding him that separates us from the extremes and practices of the world. “He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life.” [John 6:56, 47.] We want to know that we are on solid ground. There are many attractions in the world to draw the mind away from God, but we need to behold “what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.” [1 John 3:1.] Our affections must be stayed upon the Eternal. At this time, just before the close of this earth’s history, we need in the cause of God spiritual-minded men, men who are earnest in principle and who have a clear understanding of what is truth. Many need to learn that it is one thing to assent to truth, and another thing to receive the truth as the bread of God, of which, if a man eat, he shall live forever. Day by day we must feed upon the Living Bread that we may receive spiritual sustenance, as we partake of temporal food to give us physical strength. What is the Bread of Life? Jesus said, “Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He that eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him” (John 6:54-56). He does not leave us to misunderstand Him. He says, “It is the spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” (verse 63). The words of Christ are to be received with no half hearted, weak, hesitating faith. The Word gives light and assurance to all who educate their souls to believe. The heart needs the presence of the heavenly Guest—Christ abiding in the soul. We are to dwell in Christ, and Christ is to dwell in us by faith.11MR 35.3
The Lord would have every one of His believing children rich in faith; and this is the fruit of the working of the Holy Spirit upon the heart. From the heart the Spirit works outward, developing a character that God will approve. What a vast field of the treasures of truth did Christ add to the domain of faith to be appropriated by His disciples! We need greater faith if we would have better knowledge of the Word. The greatest hindrance to our receiving the divine illumination is that we do not depend on the efficiency of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is freely given us of God if we will appreciate and accept it. And what is it?—the representative of Jesus Christ. It is to be our constant helper. It is through the Spirit that Christ fulfills the promise, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life” (John 6:47). Jesus Christ is the knowledge of the Father, and Christ is our Great Teacher sent from God. Christ has declared in John that He is that Bread sent down from heaven. “Verily, verily I say unto you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that Bread of life. Christ came in the form of humanity to live the law of God. He was the Word of life. He came to be the gospel of salvation to the world, and to fulfill every specification of the law. Jesus is the Word, the guidebook, which must be received and obeyed in every particular. How necessary that this mine of truth be explored, and the precious treasures of truth be discovered and secured as rich jewels. The incarnation of Christ, His divinity, His atonement, His wonderful life in heaven as our Advocate, the office of the Holy Spirit—all those living, vital themes of Christianity are revealed from Genesis to Revelation. The golden links of truth form a chain of evangelical truth, and the first and staple link is found in the great teachings of Christ Jesus. Why, then, should not the Scriptures be ennobled and exalted in every school in our land? How little children are educated to study the Bible as the Word of God, and feed upon its truths, which are the flesh and blood of the Son of God! “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood” (that is, continue to receive the words of Christ, and practice them) “hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. All spiritual life is derived from Jesus Christ. “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God” (John 1:12). But what is the sure result of becoming a child of God? The result is that we become laborers together with God. There is a great work to be done for your own soul’s salvation, and to qualify you to win others from unbelief to a life sustained by faith in Christ Jesus: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me (with a casual faith?—No, with an abiding faith that works by love and purifies the soul) hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. ... How are we redeemed? By eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Christ. He has told us that this is eternal life. “The flesh profiteth nothing,” He declares; “the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” [John 6:63.] In studying the Scriptures, we are eating the words of Christ—the leaves of the tree of life, which are “for the healing of the nations.” [Revelation 22:2.]16LtMs, Ms 92, 1901, par. 26

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” [John 6:48, 50, 54.] Their life is precious in God’s sight; for it is hid with Christ in God—with Him “who hath brought life and immortality to light.” [2 Timothy 1:10.] Over the rent sepulcher of Joseph, Christ proclaimed, “I am the resurrection and the life.” [John 11:25.] He broke the fetters of the tomb that every one of us might rise to newness of life. Die to the world, be buried with your Lord in baptism, and rise as a new creature in Christ Jesus. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. ... For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:1, 3.] The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the three holy dignitaries of heaven, have declared that they will strengthen men to overcome the powers of darkness. All the facilities of heaven are pledged to those who by their baptismal vows have entered into a covenant with God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

If the people of God rightly appreciated the temporal and spiritual blessings which the Lord has poured upon them through Jesus Christ, continual praise would be upon their lips. We have had an experience in being relieved from spiritual bondage similar to that of the Israelites who were set free from the bondage of Egypt. Have we not had chains of oppression broken, and Red Seas of impossibilities opened up before us? Have we not been fed with manna from heaven? Have not the words of Christ come home to the soul, “This is the bread which cometh down from heaven that a man may eat thereof and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread he shall live forever: and the bread which I shall give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” [John 6:50, 51.] We are to continually feast upon this heavenly manna. By the great supper, Christ represents the blessings offered through the gospel. The provision is nothing less than Christ Himself. He is the bread that comes down from heaven; and from Him the streams of salvation flow. The Lord’s messengers had proclaimed to the Jews the advent of the Saviour; they had pointed to Christ as “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” John 1:29. In the feast He had provided, God offered to them the greatest gift that Heaven can bestow—a gift that is beyond computation. The love of God had furnished the costly banquet, and had provided inexhaustible resources. “If any man eat of this bread,” Christ said, “he shall live for ever.” John 6:51.Selected Messages Book 3

Christ took upon Himself humanity, and laid down his life a sacrifice, that man, by becoming a partaker of the divine nature, might have eternal life. Jesus, the Majesty of heaven will unite all souls to Himself who will permit Him to bind them to His great heart of infinite love. Jesus teaches us that God is an ever present “I AM.” [Exodus 3:14.] It is by cordially believing that we maintain our allegiance to God. Jesus said, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:14, 15.] Again He said, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth His life for the sheep.” “I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever, and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” [John 10:11; 6:51.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 8 [Nos. 526-663]

But turning from all lesser representations, we behold God in Jesus. Looking unto Jesus we see that it is the glory of our God to give. “I do nothing of Myself,” said Christ; “the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father.” “I seek not Mine own glory,” but the glory of Him that sent Me. John 8:28; 6:57; 8:50; 7:18. In these words is set forth the great principle which is the law of life for the universe. All things Christ received from God, but He took to give. So in the heavenly courts, in His ministry for all created beings: through the beloved Son, the Father’s life flows out to all; through the Son it returns, in praise and joyous service, a tide of love, to the great Source of all. And thus through Christ the circuit of beneficence is complete, representing the character of the great Giver, the law of life.DA 24.3

A social meeting followed where many bore testimony for the truth and expressed gratitude for that which they had heard, and said they meant from that time to be more earnest and interested in the work and cause of God than they had been heretofore. At the close of the social meeting, the Lord’s Supper was administered. Brother Wood officiated. It was a solemn, impressive symbol to us, and brought fresh and impressively to mind the words of Christ, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world.” John 6:51.3LtMs, Lt 21, 1880, par. 6

My father which gave them me is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of (my) Father’s hand.” [John 10:27-29.] “All that my Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

Arise in the strength of Jesus, for you have no strength, and be free. Has the Lord Jesus spoken truth to you from the Word, or falsehood? Your feelings have not to do with this matter. Have you faith? Look and live. Where, you may say, shall I look? Away from your miserableness, away from the serpent’s sting, to an uplifted Saviour who declares, They “that cometh unto Me I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.] Behold Jesus. Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. Brother A. T. Jones, I wish to call your attention to another matter. I was attending a meeting, and a large congregation was present. In my dream you were presenting the subject of faith and the imputed righteousness of Christ by faith. You repeated several things that works amounted to nothing, that there were no conditions. The matter was presented in that light that I knew minds would be confused and would not receive the correct impression in reference to faith and works, and I decided to write to you. You state this matter too strongly. There are conditions to our receiving justification and sanctification and the righteousness of Christ. I know your meaning, but you leave a wrong impression upon many minds. While good works will not save even one soul, yet it is impossible for even one soul to be saved without good works. God saves us under a law that we must ask if we would receive, seek if we would find, and knock if we would have the door opened unto us. Christ offers Himself as willing to save unto the uttermost all who come unto Him. “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

You are to look to Him, and believe in Him as your personal Saviour, the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world. Come to Jesus in faith, with the simplicity of a child. Make an entire surrender, and you have His words, “Him that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.] In accepting Christ by genuine faith, you gain all heaven with this precious gift.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

It may seem to you that you are hanging upon a single promise, but appropriate that one promise, and it will open to you the whole treasure house of the riches of the grace of Christ. Cling to that promise and you are safe. “Him that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out.” Present this assurance to Jesus, and you are as safe as though inside the city of God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

No language can express the love of Jesus Christ for the human soul. Leaving His home on high He came to seek for the lost sheep, and there was joy in heaven when He returned, saying, “I have found the sheep that was lost.” [Luke 15:6.] “The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty: he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” [Zephaniah 3:17.] Let not your hearts be troubled. Jesus has not forgotten you. He is preparing mansions in the kingdom of glory for every one who will believe on His name. Whosoever cometh to me, He says, I will in no wise cast out. [John 6:37.] Do not lose eternity out of your reckoning. Are you prepared for that life that measures with the life of God? Are you prepared to see the King in His beauty and cast your golden crowns at His feet? “Yet a little while, and he that shall come will [come] and will not tarry.” [Hebrews 10:37.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Now do not please Satan and glorify him by carrying a sad, mournful countenance. Now is the time, when the furnace fire kindles about your soul, to reveal your confidence, your trust in Jesus. I wish I could say something, dear afflicted one, that shall lead you to repose in Jesus Christ trustingly. The Bible places the responsibility of our happiness upon ourselves. We are to look to the light of life. Our usefulness depends on our own course of action. When any afflicted ones inquire earnestly, “What must I do to be saved?” the answer comes, “Come, suffering ones, come to Christ just as you are. Him that cometh I will in no wise cast out.” [See Acts 16:30; John 6:37.] Do not then refuse the drawing of His Spirit. He wants to make you happy even in this life. I have a message for the people of God: Look to God for your individual selves in every movement you make. Trust not in any man’s wisdom. Jesus raises His voice with clear and distinct instruction: “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden: and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me.” “Him that cometh unto Me, I will in no wise cast out.” [John 7:37; 6:37.] Coming to Christ you are not repulsed, you are not humiliated with censures, or met with distrust, suspicions, and heartless denunciations.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

Thank the Lord, if there are those that cannot lead, they can follow. There is work for all to do. We can but breathe the most earnest prayer that men may be trained to have clear perception, and that they may cultivate their God-given talents, so that they may not be deficient in organizing power. O if all who profess to be in the service of God would feel their individual responsibility, and not expect others to be their prop, but stand in their God-given independence, inquiring of God and doing His will, how much more would be accomplished! “Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out,” Christ declares. [John 6:37.] By yielding yourself to God, you gain a oneness with Him. My heart yearns after every member of the Wessels family. If Philip had been the faithful steward God designed him to be, the now wayward members of the family would not be on the enemy’s side. If their brother Philip, to whom they looked for counsel, had continued to be a true servant of the Lord Jesus, co-operating with Him, these precious ones would have been helped, their feet would now have been treading the narrow path of self-denial which their Saviour trod. I made the simplicity of faith so plain that a little child could receive it. He said, “I have confessed every sin I have any knowledge of.” I repeated his words in my talks on the point of faith, thus, for two or three mornings, and told the man he was trying to get hold of something material for him to acknowledge as faith. I told him all he had to do was to take God at His word without any remarkable demonstration, but to say, “Lord, I believe Thy Word. I take Thee at Thy own statement, ‘Him that will come unto me I will in no wise cast out.’” [John 6:37.] Thus we labored to explain that faith was not a remarkable demonstration of feeling. Faith takes God at His word. You send your faith within the veil where Jesus is, and talk with God, [saying], “You said it, Lord. In this center there are men who might be lightbearers in many places. Those who are converted and have a knowledge of the truth for this time are to be as lights amid the moral darkness. Let every believer be earnest, be zealous, in making known to others the warning message of present truth. The great question to be settled now by every believing soul is, What part shall I act in the work of giving to the world the message that is to prepare a people to meet their God? It is a great, grand work to open the Scriptures to those who know not the truth. God is now calling whole families to be consecrated laborers together with Him. He requires of us more than simply to print and send out publications containing the truth for this time. He expects us to cultivate home religion and with earnest prayer enter upon the work of visiting our neighbors and friends and communicating to them a knowledge of present truth. We are to be watchful of opportunities where we may call a number together and, filled with the spirit of love for souls, draw them close to Christ, who has promised, “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.” [John 6:37.]In Heavenly Places

How many a sin-burdened soul has echoed that prayer. And to all, the pitying Saviour’s answer is, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” It is faith that connects us with heaven, and brings us strength for coping with the powers of darkness. In Christ, God has provided means for subduing every sinful trait, and resisting every temptation, however strong. But many feel that they lack faith, and therefore they remain away from Christ. Let these souls, in their helpless unworthiness, cast themselves upon the mercy of their compassionate Saviour. Look not to self, but to Christ. He who healed the sick and cast out demons when He walked among human beings is the same mighty Redeemer today. Faith comes by the word of God. I gave myself to Jesus when I was not as old as you now are. I sought my Saviour with my whole heart; and how deeply I regretted that I had not before yielded my will, that I might be drawn to Christ. I found peace in Jesus, believing that He heard my prayers, and that He would do in my behalf just what He had promised in His word, “Those that seek Me early shall find Me” (Proverbs 8:17). I laid my Bible open before the Lord and said, “There, Lord, is Thy pledged word, ‘him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out’ (John 6:37). ‘Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you’ (Luke 11:9).”
