John 3:16
Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Jesus, who knew no sin, was made sin for us. God “gave,” not permitted to be given, and what a gift to our world was His. Everyone is to help Jesus to save the youth; He saved those of all ages, that they may be numbered with the saints in light. Christ exchanged His royal crown for a crown of thorns. He exchanged His royal robe of majesty and glory for the old cast-off robe that was placed in mockery upon His divine form. Oh, why was all this? Why did Jesus submit to become a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief? He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

On Friday I had written about forty pages, and on Sabbath morning I was weary, but this did not discourage me. I know upon whose arm I am leaning for support, and the Lord did not disappoint me. As I meditate upon the goodness and mercy and love of God, I cannot but praise His holy name. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] If these words will not thrill through every soul as he shall contemplate them, what will? This is the price of our salvation—the most humiliating, agonizing death a human being could suffer.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Obedience God requires from every son and daughter of Adam, and the consequences belong to Him. Never yet did persecution drive the soul, who was indeed a lover of Jesus Christ, away from Him. The love of Jesus in the soul is all-absorbing, for that great love wherewith God hath loved us, revealed in giving Christ to us, is beyond a parallel. “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] For our sake Christ became poor, “that we through his poverty might be rich.” [2 Corinthians 8:9.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Do we inquire what God will require of us in return for the life of His only begotten Son? The Lord will accept of nothing less than entire consecration. His sons and daughters are to be one with Him, ever ready, not only to receive favors at His hands, but to suffer privation and to endure shame for His sake.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Many Bible readers and professed Bible believers do the very thing that the Lord has told them not to do, and then they suffer the result of their disobedience. God does not work a miracle to prevent the consequences of their folly. If they introduce into their systems that which cannot make good flesh and blood, they must endure the result of their disregard of God’s Word. All who claim to love and serve the Lord Jesus should feel it their solemn duty to search the Scriptures, to see how they can be doers of His Word. Christ gave His own life for a perishing world. “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] God is good to His children, and they do not begin to understand His mercy, and His gracious care for them.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Every soul is precious in His sight, “for God so loved the world,” even in its blackness and disobedience, even with the heavy shadow of sin and Satan upon it, “that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] When Satan was triumphing as the prince of the world, when he claimed the world as his kingdom, when he was all marred and corrupted with sin, God sent His messenger from heaven, even His only begotten Son, to proclaim to all the inhabitants of the world, “I have found a ransom. I have made a way of escape for all the perishing. I have your emancipation papers provided for you, sealed by the Lord of heaven and earth.” You may have freedom upon the condition of faith in Him who is able to save unto the uttermost all who come unto God by Him.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him freely give us all things?” [Romans 8:32.] Might we not inquire, How shall we not for His sake freely give Him all things? Shall we see souls perishing around us, and not manifest a zeal and love for them proportionate to their value? The unfathomable depths of the love of God were stirred with divine benevolence in the infinite sacrifice made. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Shall the shallow streams of our gratitude be only as a ripple on the surface? What did Jesus do? He who was rich for our sakes became poor, that we through His poverty might become rich. The mysterious Godhead descended to our rescue. We see Him descending from depth to depth of humiliation in our behalf, until the shameful cross arrested His farther descent, and made it impossible to step lower.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

But “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] God might have sent His Son to condemn the world, but He sent Him to save. The Redeemer came to save, not to destroy. No words can describe the effect of His movement on the heavenly angels. They would only exclaim in wonder and admiration, “Herein is love.” [1 John 4:10.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 1 [Nos. 19-96]

O, do you not know, cannot you understand this? The only begotten Son of God recognized the nobility of humanity by taking humanity upon Himself, and dying in behalf of humanity, testifying throughout all ages that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

God could not abolish His law to save men; for this would immortalize transgression, and place the whole world under Satan’s control. But “he so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] In this wonderful gift is shown the depth of God’s goodness. He so loved sinful men that He gave Himself in His Son, that sinners might have another opportunity, another trial, another chance to show their obedience. He so loved men that in order to save them He gave His Son to the world, and in that gift He gave all heaven! This was the only provision God could make. By this gift a way was provided for sinners to return to their loyalty.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

All the rounds of ceremony can never fit the human family for membership in the family of heaven. We must submit to the molding, fashioning hand of God. The lethargy of Satan is as a funeral pall upon the people. Insensibility has first to be met and dealt with. The torpor of death must be penetrated. People are dead in trespasses and sins, and they need awakening by the power of God. We must preach Christ and His love to fallen man in that He took human nature and suffered the ill treatment of men professing godliness. His life was a life of constant self-sacrifice. He was hated, despised, and crucified upon the cross. It was the Commander of heaven that thus suffered. But “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] If God gave His Son to atone for sin, sin must be a tremendous evil, grievous in the sight of God and ruinous to man.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

The utmost eloquence cannot describe the love of God. So vast was the conception of the divine Teacher of the love of God that the measure could not be expressed. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] What scales then can weigh the tremendous guilt of professed believers in Christ, who for the sake of gain give their powers of persuasion to matters earthly and common, losing sight of Christ, losing all knowledge of Him. If we taxed our intellect and spiritual power more to comprehend this love in a fuller sense than we do now, we would put to the tax every capability, every power, to seek and save souls that are perishing out of Christ. Christlike work would be done.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

The great plan of redemption was laid before the foundation of the world. And Christ, our Substitute and Surety, did not stand alone in the wondrous undertaking of the ransom of man. In the plan to save a lost world, the counsel was between them both; the covenant of peace was between the Father and the Son. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] The Majesty of heaven, the King of Glory, would become a servant. The temple service, formed after the divine pattern, and once so pure, so sacred, and so holy, had been tainted with evil. It could not be remodelled. The lesson must go farther. As the sinner looks into the great moral looking glass, he sees his defects of character. He sees himself just as he is, spotted, defiled, and condemned. But he knows that the law cannot in any way remove the guilt or pardon the transgressor. It is his schoolmaster to show him the remedy. He must go farther than repentance. He must look to his sin-bearing Saviour. As Christ is revealed to him upon the cross of Calvary, dying beneath the weight of the sins of the whole world, the Holy Spirit shows him the relation of God to all who repent of their transgression. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

Christ informs His disciples that the amount of divine attention given to any object is proportionate to the rank which that object occupies in the creation of God. If the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, if the lovely flowers that delight our senses reveal such exquisite skill on the part of the great Master Artist, we cannot have exaggerated ideas of the regard and value which God has placed on the human beings made in His likeness. [He] lays before men a book, every page of which bears their history. Each has a page assigned him, and every phase of his history is there given, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. The value of men, the estimate God places upon them, is displayed in the cross of Calvary. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

There are those who have had evidence and light, and yet have not been made tender by it. They read of the great sacrifice made for them as they would read a novel—to shed sensational tears over the facts to be easily brushed away. What shall be done to those who bear the invitation of mercy and reject it? “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] If God spared not His own Son, but gave Him to humiliation, suffering, and death to save man from his sins, will He spare those who continue in sin, who reject and despise His love and compassion? Can we wonder that at the close of the one thousand years all who have refused to accept Him shall be destroyed with fire from heaven outside the city of God? God declares that this shall be so. [Revelation 20:9.] He says, “Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate; and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. ... Human sympathy should be cherished in every heart. It is an attribute of God, and is never to be banished. “All ye are brethren.” [Matthew 23:8.] God has laid upon men the responsibility of giving sympathy to their fellow men, of helping the needy, the wounded, the bruised. Many are demoralized by their own course of action, but who of the human family can understand, as God understands, the cause of their misery. There are in our world today many wounded, cheerless hearts who need relief. The Lord has agencies for brightening the lives of these disconsolate ones. We should now feel the responsibility of laboring with intense earnestness to impart the light we have received to others. Souls are very precious in God’s sight. He “so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Keep the perishing in view. If they are not won to Christ, they will lose an eternity of bliss. Remember what it is possible for them to gain. The soul that God has created and Christ redeemed is of great value because of the possibilities and probabilities before it, the spiritual advantages that have been granted it, the capabilities that it may [have] if it is vitalized by the Word of God, and the immortality which through the Lifegiver it may gain if obedient. One soul is of more value to heaven than a whole world of property, houses, and lands, money.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The Lord of life and glory humbled Himself to partake of human nature, that in and through Him the fallen sons and daughters of Adam may become united with God. Never could an earthly father feel as great and deep a pity and sympathy for his sons and daughters as our heavenly Father feels for His sons and daughters. Never can love be shown like the love our Father in heaven has shown for the human family. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Christ came to our world to counterwork sin. God has given His only begotten Son to die for sinners. He “so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save, neither is his ear heavy that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” “Their web shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands. Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths. The way of peace they know not, and there is no judgment in their going. They have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.” [Isaiah 59:1, 2, 6-8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

In Christ’s day many great men of the earth heard the gospel, but they did not become sufficiently interested to search for the pearl of great price. But on the Day of Pentecost five thousand were converted in one day by the presentation of the gospel. Christ’s witnesses proclaimed the truth, telling men the wonderful news of the precious pearl. And what a remarkable communication was on that day made from heaven to earth. The great assembly of people who witnessed this scene had recently witnessed in this same city the crucifixion of the world’s Redeemer. How little those who saw that scene understood what it meant. How few realized that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] God in human flesh died that He might bring life and immortality to light.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Christ drank the bitter cup in their behalf. He took upon Himself the guilt of every sinner then in the world, and every sinner that should afterward be born. As He bowed His soul to receive the load of guilt, He cried, “If it be possible, let this cup pass from me.” [Matthew 26:39.] He made a voluntary sacrifice. He contemplated the burden of sin. But there is no danger if the heart is susceptible to the influence of the Spirit of God. The first work essential is to give the message of mercy and warning to the world, to ears that will hear. No bodily movement is required to bring us near to God. Neither is a violent exercise of the mind necessary. But the Lord invites every human agent to meet Him on the ground of the great atoning sacrifice. Man is required to give a cordial assent to the terms of salvation, and be reconciled to God to do all His commandments and walk in obedience and fellowship with God. And though sin existed for ages, seeking to counteract the merciful tide of love flowing from God to the human race, yet the love and care that God bestows upon the beings He has created in His own image has not ceased to increase in richness and abundance. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” [John 3:16]. He crowned His benevolence by the inestimable gift of Jesus. By this sacrifice, a healing flood of life and heavenly grace was poured upon our world. This was God’s gift to man—a gift that defies all computation. By giving His Son, God made it impossible for man to say that He could have done more; and the mind of man is put to the utmost stretch in the effort to comprehend this wonderful love.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

He was a man of sorrow, and acquainted with grief. He was wounded for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. He came to reveal God’s love for a sinful, fallen world. He did not love sin, but He loved the sinner, and He came to restore the moral image of God in man. He came in human nature to live the law that is the representation of God’s character. He declared, I have kept My Father’s commandments. Satan and his synagogue had made the excuse that man could not keep the commandments of God. Standing at the head of humanity, Christ removed this excuse from all. What a comfort it is to know that the Lord wants us in His family above. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] We need to cherish and exercise faith. Our faith must work. We must have that faith that works by love and purifies the soul. The leaven has a vital energy, penetrating and absorbing all the elements into which it is introduced. So likewise, the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. The Word of the Lord is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword. The Word is a power as we practice it. The great change that the truth makes is inward. It begins in the heart, and works outwardly. With the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. “Burnt offerings and sacrifices thou wouldest not.” [Hebrews 10:5, 6.] “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.” [Psalm 51:17.] God is not pleased with Pharisaical pretense.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

We see a very neat, convenient house of worship. We acknowledge God as the great and unperceived Actor, and the human instrumentalities co-operating with the divine agencies. This house has been built for the purpose of cooperating with God in the great work of saving souls. Christ clothed His divinity with humanity that He might associate with the fallen race, and through His own merits might elevate man to be a partaker of the divine nature. There must be a cooperation of the human with the divine. God must work within, imparting to man moral powers and quickening moral susceptibilities. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him might not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. God is love. He has shown that love in the gift of Christ. When “He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” He withheld nothing from His purchased possession. (John 3:16.) He gave all heaven, from which we may draw strength and efficiency, that we be not repulsed or overcome by our great adversary. But the love of God does not lead Him to excuse sin. He did not excuse it in Satan; He did not excuse it in Adam or in Cain; nor will He excuse it in any other of the children of men. The Lord God shall be exalted. Those who are now controlled by human ambition, human passions, shall become workers for Me.Manuscript Releases, vol. 10 [Nos. 771-850]

When tempted to give up under discouragement and difficulty let us study the life and experiences of Christ. He had to contend against the powers of darkness that He might not be overcome. We have the same battle to fight, the same victories to win. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). It is our privilege to lay hold on the strength of One who is able to save unto the uttermost all that come unto God by Him. He invites you to present your case at the throne of Grace, and cast your helpless soul on Him.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Seeking pardon for sin, Saul found the sin-pardoning Saviour, who takes away the guilt of the world. But it flashed its invaluable loveliness before him, that his attention might be attracted. Christ and his righteousness became to Paul more than the whole world. “I count all things but loss ... that I may win Christ,” he declared. God has shown the interest He has in the human family. Wherein lies our strength? In being connected with Christ. He declares, “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you; continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” [John 15:9-11.] “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. Christ would elevate and refine man’s mind, purifying it from all dross, that he may appreciate the love that is without a parallel. He opens before them the volume of his providence, and bids them, as far as possible, take in the whole revelation. He tells them that in this book is written the name of every individual, that in the page assigned each individual is written every particular of his history, even to the numbering of the hairs of the head. It is a solemn thing to live, because we are not our own, but the Lord’s, bought with the blood of His only begotten Son. Think of the estimate God has placed on us. When we were ready to perish, He sent His Son to die for us, that we might have an opportunity to regain what has been lost by sin. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] This infinite sacrifice connects us with God. Satan cannot hold us if we will accept Christ as our hope, our life, our personal Saviour. The spotless, sinless Son of God has borne our sins in His own body on the cross, that we might live unto God. When we truly receive Christ, we live His life, not our own. What is the Bible interpretation of God? “God is love.” [1 John 4:8.] By giving Christ to our world, God manifested His love for mankind. “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Yes, “everlasting life.” This is the love which is the fulfilling of the law. Only he whose heart is filled with compassion for fallen man, who loves to a purpose, showing his love by the performance of Christlike deeds, will be able to endure the seeing of Him who is invisible. He only who loves his fellow men to a purpose can know God. He who loves not those for whom the Father has done so much, knows not God. This is the reason there is so little genuine vitality in our churches. Theology is valueless unless it is saturated with the love of Christ.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Let us strive with persevering energy for the life to come. The shame and guilt of selfishness and covetousness belong to man alone. The glory of his repentance belongs to God alone. The best religious culture and the highest advantages have no power to sanctify or to preserve nations or individuals from degeneracy. By uncontrollable fits of passion, man at times gives evidence that he cannot be trusted, that he would sell his Lord as did Judas for thirty pieces of silver. The sinfulness of the members of God’s church is not chargeable to any neglect on the part of God. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] The Lord of heaven has bestowed abundant labor upon the human race. All this God did that man might lay hold of the hope set before him in the gospel and feel the force of the redeeming power derived from the incarnation of the Son of God. Taking humanity, Christ died in the place of the transgressor, that the transgressor, though fallen, might by the Saviour’s resurrection, ascension, and mediation, receive the Holy Spirit. God’s love for the angelic host is as a part of Himself, direct and positive in its divinity. God’s love for the human race is a peculiar form—a love born of mercy; for the human subject is all-undeserving. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Mercy implies the imperfection of the object upon which it is bestowed. Because of man’s imperfection, mercy was brought into active existence. Sin is not the object of God’s love, but of His hatred. Yet He pities the sinner, because the guilty one bears the Creator’s image, and has received from Him the capabilities that make it possible for him to become a son of God, not through his own merits, but through the imputed merits of Jesus Christ, through the great sacrifice the Saviour has made in his behalf.Manuscript Releases, vol. 13 [Nos. 1000-1080]

We breathe because God takes charge of the human machinery. Infinite love—how great it is! God made the world to enlarge heaven. He desires a larger family of created intelligences. And before man was created God and Christ entered into a covenant that if man fell from his allegiance, Christ would bear the penalty of transgression. Man fell, but he was not left in the power of the destroyer. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] And when God gave Christ, He gave all heaven. To the Redeemer was given all power in heaven and in earth. He was given all the treasures of heaven to impart for the benefit and blessing of mankind.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Our God is a merciful God. Though heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him, His chosen temple is the soul of the humble and contrite; and His peace and grace shine into the chambers of the mind and into the soul temple. Human beings are to live contrite lives before God. They are encouraged to hope in His mercy; for He “so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

The Lord Jesus calls upon me to set these things before believers and unbelievers. Be merciful, even as your Father in heaven is merciful. Think of the great gift God has made you, even the gift of His Son. Think of what He has done to secure your salvation. Your sinful condition demanded a sacrifice. In your spiritual destitution you had nothing to offer. Christ came to this world and on the cross offered Himself as a sacrifice for you. You are not your own, for you have been bought with a price; “therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] He “so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Let us never call any man common or unclean. God has given His Son for every man’s salvation. He “so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] In view of this infinite sacrifice for the salvation of all, let us respect every human being on the face of the earth whether they believe exactly as we do or not. If they do not accept God’s Word as it reads, it is our privilege, as we have opportunity, to present to them the light God has given us, and strive to win them to the truth. When God’s people place the gift of speech under the influence and control of the Holy Spirit, thousands will hear the message that God is love, that He “so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] His heart of infinite love embraces every human being. His love is an inexhaustible well-spring of joy and peace. It is as enduring as eternity. It is the fountain opened for Judah and Jerusalem. From its unfailing supply every soul may be satisfied. This love is the life of God, working with transforming power in the soul, perfecting Christian character, making human beings partakers of the divine nature. He knoweth our frame, that we are but dust. Knowing this, He desires to impress us with the conviction that our only hope is in and through the merits of Jesus Christ. Of our own selves we cannot bear the weight of our own sins, nor atone for our mistakes and errors, but the Lord has provided a way of escape, for it is because He saw us sinners, unable to save ourselves, that God’s great heart was touched, and He “so loved the world [in their degradation and sin] that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Those who refuse to accept Christ’s invitation to wear His yoke of obedience and to learn of Him His meekness and lowliness will not form characters that fit them to become members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King. Before the universe such persons bear a direct testimony against Christ. They do their Saviour a great wrong. By their choice they reveal that they despise the great salvation which the heavenly Father has placed within their reach. They do not properly estimate the value that Christ has placed upon them. He came to this earth in perfect love as the very expression of the mind of God. And yet how lowly, how humble, was His life! Day by day He might have been seen in the cities of Palestine, sometimes entering the humble abodes of want, sometimes standing in the great thoroughfares of travel, speaking words which were to fall into some hearts as good seed to produce their harvest. How kind, how affable, how courteous He was in all His dealings with those whom He addressed! The poorest felt that they could speak to Him. He took little children into His arms and blessed them. He soothed the sorrows of the distressed and dried the widow’s tear. Feeding the hungry, healing the sick, meeting and relieving every form of need and misery, He went about doing good—the great, unwearied Servant of man’s necessity.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

“God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Love is the great principle that actuates unfallen beings. With amazement the angels behold the indifference that those who have light and knowledge manifest toward a world unsaved. The heavenly host is filled with an intense desire to work through human agencies to restore in man the image of God. They are ready and waiting to do this work. The combined power of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost is pledged to uplift man from his fallen state. Every attribute, every power of divinity, has been placed at the command of those who unite with the Saviour in winning men to God. O that all would appreciate the truth as it is in Jesus! O that all would love God in return for the love wherewith He has loved them! Sin has extinguished the love that God placed in man’s heart. The work of the church is to rekindle this love. The church is to co-operate with God by uprooting selfishness from the human heart, placing in its stead the benevolence that was in man’s heart in his original state of perfection.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

The Lord Jesus is the maker of the mind which man has debased and enfeebled by sin. The central power of the earth’s fallen subjects is a demon. He has set up his throne in the world. Christ proposes the means of recovery through the great work of redemption. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] The Lord Jesus, through sacrificing His life upon the cross, purposed by the agency of the Holy Spirit to bring man to see his position as a sinner and surrender his will to God’s will. He will sanctify every soul that will receive the gracious gift and give him power to become a son of God. He takes away the destructive tendencies of the sinful nature and brings the human agency into His service. Working through His Holy Spirit He sanctifies and cleanses the soul temple. Thus, though his whole powers had become deranged, man may be brought back, restored to his original relationship to God, and become an agent of good to every other man. In place of the diseased, soul-and-body-destroying principles of evil, he follows heavenly principles. Sanctified by the agency of the Holy Spirit, his influence upon his fellow man becomes aggressive to expel from the earth the evils produced through the satanic perversion of that which God designed should be only good. All these perverted powers the Lord Jesus will turn to His service, and man becomes the human channel to work the will of God to redeem and bring back a world that has broken away from [its] allegiance to God and to unite them to their proper center.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

In the power of God’s grace you may obtain most precious victories. You are not to treat your life as a romance, but as a reality. You are to be a laborer together with God in forming a character that He can approve. “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Does the charge end there?—No, no, thank God! “For it is God that worketh in you, both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” [Philippians 2:12, 13.] You are to be a co-worker with Him in the saving of your soul. You are to will to do the will of God. Then do not spend your time and strength in murmuring, in talking unbelief and finding fault with God. Encourage confidence in Him. Speak kindly of Him. The clouds of uncertainty and unbelief were rolled back as the Saviour cried with a loud voice, “It is finished.” No longer had the enemy any power to tempt and annoy Him. Holiness and justice united in the completion of the great work of redemption. On the cross mercy and truth met together, righteousness and peace kissed each other. Jesus had testified that God is true. Faith demands no more. The doubting soul need not ask, Hath God forgotten to be gracious? Hath He in anger shut up His tender mercies? The answer comes clear and strong, “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” [John 3:16].Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

The world is God’s family. Because of the disobedience of men and women to His law, a way had to be provided whereby the demands of the law could be met. “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] This is the sacrifice that God made in behalf of those who had fallen through disobedience. He gave up His only begotten Son to bear the penalty of the sins of the whole world, and in this gift He gave man all heaven’s facilities. He will pardon all who confess and forsake their sins. God has given man more than a mere animal life. He “so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] He expects those for whom He has made so great a sacrifice to show their appreciation of His love by following the example that Christ has set them, living lives that are in harmony with His will. He expects them to respond to the love He has expressed for them by denying self for the good of others. He expects them to use the powers of mind and body in His service. He has given them affections, and He expects them to use this precious gift to His glory. We have a most sacred, solemn truth to bear to the world. “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] The Lord Jesus Christ gave up His high command, and clothed His divinity with humanity, that He might stand at the head of the human race, to save to the uttermost all who will receive Him as their Saviour. We may cast all our care upon Him, for He has plainly shown that He cares for every one of us. He has shown the great love wherewith He loves us. He brought to the world the most elevated, ennobling truths. He has removed the barrier that separated us from God and made it possible for us to grasp His saving hand. He will cleanse us from the sins that have dishonored God. He suffered and died to make an atonement for sin, that all who repent and come to Him might receive forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” [1 John 1:9.] His blood was shed for the remission of sins; He obtained redemption for us by giving His life for the sin of the world. The heart of the Great Healer works inwardly and outwardly in the preparation of a people to bear the message for these last days. The men who have devoted years to the study of science need now the education they could have obtained to become acquainted with God and His words and His works. His knowledge would have been of the highest value. In this work, the subject of temperance should be strongly and clearly presented. Let the people be shown what a blessing the practice of health principles will be to them. Let them see what God designed men and women to become. Point to the great sacrifice made for the uplifting and ennobling of the human race. With the Bible in hand, present the requirements of God. Tell the hearers that He expects them to use the powers of mind and body in a way that will honor Him. Show them how the enemy is trying to drag human beings down by leading them to indulge perverted appetite. Clearly, plainly, earnestly tell them how thousands of men and women are using God’s money to corrupt themselves and to make this world a hell. Millions of dollars are spent for that which makes men mad. Present this matter so clearly that its force cannot but be seen. When so many of Christ’s followers left Him, and the Saviour asked the twelve, “Will ye also go away?” Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.” [John 6:67, 68.] It filled Christ’s heart with sorrow to see anyone leaving Him, because He knew that faith in His name and in His mission is man’s only hope. This desertion of His followers was a humiliation to Him. Oh, how little human beings know of the sorrow that filled the heart of infinite love when such things took place. No one in the world ever longed more earnestly for appreciation and fellowship than did Christ. He hungered for sympathy. His heart was filled with a longing desire that human beings might appreciate the gift of God to the world and honor Him by believing His words and speaking forth His praise. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

The truth of heavenly origin was brought to our world by Christ in person. If great display were necessary to make an impression on the minds of human beings, to call them to repentance, Christ would have adopted that plan. All the expense could have been met by Him who said, “The gold and the silver are Mine.” [Haggai 2:8.] But Christ made no display. He might have come to the world accompanied by a retinue of angelic beings; but He did not. He was commanded in the heavenly courts, but He laid aside His kingly crown and His royal robes and clothed His divinity with humanity, coming to this world as a helpless babe. He came to meet all the temptations wherewith human beings are beset. For our sake, He stood at the head of the fallen race, to give men and women an opportunity to see that “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] “He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name; which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of Him, and cried, saying, This was He of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for He was before me. And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. “I do set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between Me and the earth.... And I will remember My covenant,.... and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh” [Genesis 9:13-15]. In the rainbow above the throne is an everlasting testimony that “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” [John 3:16]. Whenever the law is presented before the people, let the teacher of truth point out the throne arched with the rainbow of promise, the righteousness of Christ. The glory of the law is Christ. He came to magnify the law and make it honorable. Make it distinct that mercy and truth have met together in Christ, and righteousness and peace have embraced each other. It is when you are looking to His throne, offering up your penitence and praise and thanksgiving to God, that you perfect Christian character, and represent Christ to the world. You abide in Christ and Christ abides in you; you have that peace that passeth all understanding. We need constantly to meditate upon Christ and His attractive loveliness. We must direct minds to Jesus, fasten them upon Him. In every discourse dwell upon the divine attributes.
