We read in James, “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing” (James 1:1-4). This is a wonderful position. And it is our privilege to occupy this position.2SAT 163.3
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: but the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him” (verses 5-12).2SAT 165.3

God has been greatly dishonored by His people leaning upon human beings. He has not told us to do this. He has told us that He will teach us, He will guide us. We may come to Him and receive help. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth you not” for your ignorance. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall in divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” [James 1:1-4.] O, we have an experience to gain in the religious life that we have not yet gained.19LtMs, Ms 158, 1904, par. 17
“If any of you lack wisdom,”—you see it does not merely address the ministers or the medical missionaries—“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” [Verse 5.]19LtMs, Ms 158, 1904, par. 19
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” [Verse 5.] While I was in Australia, letters were sent to me from hundreds and thousands of miles, to ask counsel in regard to some little family trouble. The ones who sent these letters might have taken counsel with the ministers of their churches. But there was Someone else from whom they could have received wisdom. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.” He is well acquainted with you. He knows everything connected with your life. He understands your heart, better than you yourself. He giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not. And if he asks God for wisdom, “It shall be given him.” [Verse 5.]19LtMs, Ms 158, 1904, par. 21
“But let him ask in faith.” [Verse 6.] That is the one condition upon which the promise of answer to prayer is based. You are to exercise faith in Christ, and believe that He will give you what you have asked.19LtMs, Ms 158, 1904, par. 22

Read carefully the first chapter of James. Do not turn away, saying, This has no reference to me, for it has special reference to you. Read (verses 1-16) slowly and prayerfully. Then read verses 16-19. Then spend a few minutes in silent prayer, asking the Lord to search your hearts as with a lighted candle, and reveal to you yourselves, for your words and actions testify against you before the whole heavenly universe. Read the verses one by one to the close of the chapter, and then pray earnestly for the spiritual eye salve, that the heavenly anointing may cleanse you from the perverted ideas which are born of selfishness. Read the third chapter of James. This entire chapter should be read and studied. God help you to see. Let the words of chapter four be eaten. By practicing these words, create a different atmosphere about your souls. “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” [James 1:19.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

To be saved, a man must gain the victory over himself, his temper, his inclinations. His will must be brought into conformity to the will of God. The glory of heaven is for those only who on this earth work out the righteousness of Christ. Students, read carefully and prayerfully the first chapter of James. I have words to speak to you. As one who has been long in the work of God, you have grave responsibilities resting upon you. God calls upon you to take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Will you read carefully and prayerfully the first chapter of James, from the first verse to the last? If you have a clear understanding of the Scriptures, you will make an application of the instruction contained in this chapter—an application that will lead you to see that you have a work to do to clear the King’s highway.17LtMs, Lt 185, 1902, par. 5

“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is tried he shall receive a crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him.” [Verse 12.] Wonderful are the inducements held out before those whom Christ has purchased with His blood. Those who truly love the Saviour will not yield to temptation either in thought or in action. They will not, because they are tried, speak unkind, unbrotherly words, the saying of which makes them commandment-breakers.17LtMs, Lt 185, 1902, par. 11

“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any man be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass; for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seemeth to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. Pure religion, and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” [James 1:19-27.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

Take the first chapter of the First Epistle of Peter; read, and let every church member obey the Word in the letter and in the spirit, commencing this chapter with a full purpose to carry it out. If every man and woman seeking office would solemnly believe these words of Peter, would there not be a decided change in the words and in the spirit as you speak to others? Take the Word in your hand, every church member, read James and First Peter and Second Peter also, and bow your knees before our Lord Jesus Christ and intercede individually for the converting influence of the Holy Spirit to come to you. The first chapter of Second Peter, from the first verse of the chapter to the close, is especially for us as a people.James 1:2

Do not think that the Christian life is free from temptation. Temptations will come to every Christian. Both the Christian and the one who does not accept Christ as his leader will have trials. The difference is that the latter is serving a tyrant, doing his mean drudgery, while the Christian is serving the One who died to give him eternal life. Do not look upon trial as something strange, but as the means by which we are to be purified and strengthened. “Count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations,” James admonishes; “knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience” (James 1:2, 3).Our Father Cares

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.” James 1:2. This may seem a strange note, at first appearance, almost a contradiction of truth, but if we read on to the end of the whole chapter with an intelligent, thoughtful mind, the explanation is clear. No one is to invite temptation, but if “ye fall into ... temptations, knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Brethren came to counsel with me. Parties came thrice, but I could not speak with them or see them at all. Today have ventured to have words with two parties. We need to consult the Lord most earnestly in prayer. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven by the winds and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” [James 1:5-8.] Here is where the great deficiency exists. We do not bring our hearts to Christ in humility.14LtMs, Lt 117a, 1899, par. 3
The Lord will work with and for all who have sincere faith. “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations,” but be careful and not fall under these temptations. “Knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience, but let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect, wanting nothing.” [Verses 2-4.] We have no time to indulge in the luxury of sorrow or unhappy feelings. “Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name.” [Hebrews 13:12-15.] Here is where we lose many blessings.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

My mind was called to the first of James, second verse: “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work.” If this is our privilege, and we cannot think that the apostle has led us astray, then let us by faith appropriate the promises of God to us. “That ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” [Verses 2-4.] The Word does not say, count it all joy when ye fall under temptations, but when ye fall into temptations. It is not necessary because you fall into temptations that you should fall under them, but it is a comfort to know when you fall into temptation that you are sons and daughters of God, and that the trying of your faith worketh—ill will, murmuring, fretfulness?—No, patience! And this is an evidence to us that we are sons and daughters of God, if the trying of our faith worketh patience. But Jesus will help us because we look to God for our support and strength in every emergency.5LtMs, Ms 20, 1887, par. 7
This is the way that many pray. They pray, and they would be much surprised if the Lord would answer their prayer. They do not expect that the Lord will hear them, and they go away just as they came. “Knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience.” [James 1:3.] Well now, let our faith be tried. Certainly we will not know whether we have any faith unless it is tried, knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Well, you say, I cannot see and feel that which I desire, but I believe the Lord will give me the things I have asked of Him. I can and will trust in God. Then be thankful, knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Do not become restless and faultfinding under the test and proving of God; do not fret or scold or talk discouragements and grieve the Holy Spirit. That which you sow you will also reap, and you do not want to reap this kind of a harvest. You must be careful what kind of seed you put into the soil, for it will be reproduced. If you talk light and faith and hope, you will educate yourself to see light when God presents it to you. “But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” [Verse 4.]5LtMs, Ms 20, 1887, par. 8
Now everything seems to hinge upon faith, and here are precious words right to the point. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” [Verse 5.] Now do not get to anyone else with your trials and your temptations, but carry [them] to God. What is the condition in the promise? We are to ask in faith, nothing wavering. When you see those that are in ecstasy, full of joy, let temptations and the little difficulties come, and the first thing you know, they are way down in the valley of despondency and gloom, and they begin to talk out their discouragements and doubts. Well, I don’t know about this, I do not feel happy, I do not know whether we have the truth or not, and they do not understand this and that, and they talk darkness. Satan listens with hellish joy, for they please the devil doing this. When these discouragements arise, they should not talk them to others. The devil cannot read your thoughts, but he hears your words and sees your actions, and takes advantage of the weak points of your character, and you have told him how he can gain victory over you by his temptations, wherewith to beset you.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

“Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations; that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, might be found unto the praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.” [1 Peter 1:6, 7.] “Count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” [James 1:2-4.]25LtMs, Ms 31, 1911, par. 57
The heavenly universe is watching with the deepest interest the conflict between Christ in the person of His saints and the great deceiver. Those who recognize and resist temptation are fighting the Lord’s battles. To such are given the commendation, “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation.” [Verse 12.] Endurance of temptation means the cultivation of patience. The tempted, harassed soul cannot trust in his own strength of purpose. Feeling his utter helplessness, he flees to the stronghold, saying, My Saviour, I cast my helpless soul upon Thee. The fiercer the temptation, the more strongly he clings to the Mighty One.James 1:2-25

Christ is more deeply interested in the men who need help than any human agent can be. Then will they not take it all to the Lord in prayer? They will find that His arm is not shortened, that it cannot save, neither His ear heavy that it cannot hear. The apostle says, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience,” if you will only let it have this influence upon you. [James 1:2, 3.] But if you look at your difficulties, and talk of them, they will magnify before you. If in the place of going to the Source of all grace and sufficiency, you look to your fellow men, and carry your burdens to those who are weighed down on every hand, from what source do you obtain your knowledge? “Let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect, and entire, wanting nothing.” [Verse 4.]13LtMs, Lt 87, 1898, par. 12
“If any of you lack wisdom,” God says, “let him ask” of his overburdened brother? No; “let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him; but let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” “Do not err, my beloved brethren; every good and perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights in whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” [Verses 5-8, 16, 17.]13LtMs, Lt 87, 1898, par. 13
Here then is the door that is open to all. No one need to send across the continent, and knock at the door of human, finite wisdom. Bow upon your knees before God, and ask Him who is nigh for the things you need. Christ is nearer to you than you think. Then do not pour out your complaints to human ears, that you may receive some word of wisdom from human channels. “Of his own will begat he us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creation.” [Verse 18.] Then He hears us, and knows all about our burdens. He would have all who believe the word practice the teachings of the word, and have faith in that God who is back of every promise He has made.13LtMs, Lt 87, 1898, par. 14
The apostle admonishes us, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” [Verse 19.] God would have all who seek knowledge of Him, to hearken with attention, submit one to another. If some expression of another does not meet your mind, wait. Do not be in a hurry to express your difference of opinion in matters that perplex you, lest you yield to the temptation to become irritated in spirit and speak unadvisedly. You have no right to be angry with the Lord’s workers because your mind is not prepared to harmonize with their plans and methods. Until you know of a surety that they are not making straight paths for their feet, wait. In patience possess your soul, and cleanse the soul temple of the passion which so easily springs into life, and which will hinder you from receiving the word with meekness of wisdom.13LtMs, Lt 87, 1898, par. 15
Under all circumstances we are to be doers of the Word. “For if any man be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a glass; for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the word, this man shall be blessed in his deeds. If any man among you seemeth to be religious and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and the widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” [Verses 23-27.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 17 [Nos. 1236-1300]

Who is your bookkeeper? Who is your treasurer? Who is your business manager? Are they careful and competent? Look to this. It is possible for thousands of dollars to be misappropriated, apparently without anyone understanding how, and the school be losing continually. Those in charge may feel this keenly, supposing they have done their best. But why do debts accumulate? Let those in charge of a school find out each month the true financial standing of the school. Take the Bible as your guide, live its teachings. “Ask, and ye shall receive.” We all need a deeper spirituality; we should each seek God for ourselves. I presented before them the precious promise, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering” [verses 5, 6]. God requires heart service. To obey is better than sacrifice; without obedience and pure love the richest offering is too poor to be presented to the Owner of all things. My brother, I believe Jesus has presented to you correct views of yourself and of that which is objectionable in your character as a minister of God. If you see this and repent of it, you will give evidence by your words and actions that you are transformed by confessing your sin and forsaking that which has grieved the Spirit of God. The Lord will write pardon over against your name, and will permit you to serve Him in ministerial work. He will be to you a present help in every time of need if you will walk humbly before Him. Before the humblest is opened the promises of the Word of God. God declares, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally....” James 1:5. He will never be sent away empty. And the man who lives by every word of God will improve in mental and moral capabilities. He will have a clearer understanding than he manifested before he opened his heart to the entrance of the Word of life. Connected by faith with the living Source of wisdom and knowledge, the mental powers will grow and expand. While the powers of the intellect were under the sway of Satan, the whole man was deformed. In all who have been chosen to accomplish a work for God the human element is seen. Yet they have not been men of stereotyped habits and character, who were satisfied to remain in that condition. They earnestly desired to obtain wisdom from God and to learn to work for Him. Says the apostle, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5. But God will not impart to men divine light while they are content to remain in darkness. In order to receive God’s help, man must realize his weakness and deficiency; he must apply his own mind to the great change to be wrought in himself; he must be aroused to earnest and persevering prayer and effort. Wrong habits and customs must be shaken off; and it is only by determined endeavor to correct these errors and to conform to right principles that the victory can be gained. Many never attain to the position that they might occupy, because they wait for God to do for them that which He has given them power to do for themselves. All who are fitted for usefulness must be trained by the severest mental and moral discipline, and God will assist them by uniting divine power with human effort.Prophets and Kings

None should become discouraged in the study of the Revelation because of its apparently mystical symbols. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” James 1:5.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

Piety must be practiced in the home. Interested personal efforts must be made for those around you. Seek the Lord in private prayer. Ask Christ to do for you what you need to have done. He has been tempted in all points like as we are, and He knows now to succor those that are tempted. God calls upon you to leave the atmosphere of unbelief in which you have been dwelling and place yourselves in an atmosphere of faith and confidence. Do your best. Do not seek wisdom from finite men, who may be bewildered by the temptations of Satan, who may plant the seeds of doubt rather than the seeds of faith. Go to Jesus, “who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” [James 1:5.] Has not His invitation reached your ears and touched your heart? He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls. To have a connection with the God of power and wisdom is to be endowed with wisdom, and this privilege is ours, for when God gave Jesus He gave all heaven in one rich gift. There is no limit to the resources at our command. The Lord says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” [James 1:5.] Then ask and receive. Come to learn of God like a little child. Don’t think you know it all, but as a learner come in humility and be teachable, and while you keep that position you will learn fast. God grant that you may understand what it is to know God and Jesus Christ whom He hath sent.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

I plead with my brethren and sisters who believe that the Lord is soon to come to have more than finite wisdom. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5. We need not go stumbling along in uncertainty, thinking that the larger our institutions become, the more will they exert influence in the world. The strength of our institutions is not found so much in their worldly prosperity as in the character of their managers. They are to be meek and lowly of heart, learning daily their lessons in the school of Christ, seeking by prayer and supplication to know the will of the Lord, and enquiring at every step “Is this the way of the Lord?”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Those who search the Scriptures will find explicit instruction as to what God requires of them on points of practical religious life. You are making a mistake in calling the attention of the flock of God from the Word, the unerring word of prophecy. Take heed what you hear, and be cautious what you receive. There is need of caution lest the minds of the little flock shall be found accrediting that which is not the genuine work of the Holy Spirit. There is very great danger here. Satan is ever seeking to introduce spurious material into the work, in order that he may mar the testimony, and bring discredit upon the truth. He would mingle with it an element that would be a stumbling block in the pathway of God’s people. The commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus is the message we have to bear to the world. The Word of God is not one-sided, it is truth to be practiced. It is light extending on every side like the rays of the sun. It is light to lighten every man who will read and understand and practice its teachings. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5) “Search the Word.” See 2 Peter 1:19-20.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

There is an important work to be done in relation to the sheep and the lambs of God’s pasture. No vestige of selfishness, no dictatorial spirit, no lording it over God’s heritage, is to be manifested. Those who are placed as elders and deacons should always feel the responsibility that rests upon them and walk in humility and meekness. If they fail to do this, they will have a growing sense of their own importance, will be filled with assumption, and undertake the generalship of those placed under their charge. They will even prescribe the little particulars in the routine of their labors and dictate courses of action for them to follow that circumstances would not admit. Every worker in the moral vineyard should pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and believe that he will be thus guided. Let the worker for God present the promise of God. The Lord says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” [James 1:5.]9LtMs, Ms 100, 1894, par. 3
The Lord has not said that His workers shall make no move until they have sent to the president of the General Conference to ask his advice. The president may be traveling in foreign countries and far from the scene of operation, and the business to be done may be of such a character that it would be impossible to delay decisions, and the venture must be made at once. In a case of this kind what must be done? The Lord has told you what to do: As a laborer in His vineyard, you have Headquarters close at hand. “Let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” [Verse 5.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The inexperienced need to be guided by wise counsel when in trial and assailed with temptation; they must be taught that attainments in spiritual things will cost them steadfast, well directed effort. We must repeat it often to those newly come to the faith, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” [James 1:5.] These words are to be presented in the Spirit of the Master who gave them, for they are of more value than gold or silver or precious stones. Teach the young disciples to put their hands in the hand of Christ, saying, “Lead me, guide me.” What comfort and hope and blessing will the needy, perplexed souls receive if they will humbly seek God. The condition is that they come in faith, nothing wavering, asking for guidance in the day of perplexity. This pledge is given to every sincere seeker, “You shall have gracious answers.” “Ye shall receive.” [Matthew 21:22.] The instruction is to be often given that what God has said will never fail. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes. We must teach every soul to lay his requests by prayers on the mercy seat. Strength and grace will surely come to the one who does this, for the Lord has promised. And yet so many go in weakness because they do not believe that God will do just as He has said.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

The power to discriminate between right and wrong we can possess only through individual dependence upon God. Each for himself is to learn from Him through His word. Our reasoning powers were given us for use, and God desires them to be exercised. “Come now, and let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:18), He invites us. In reliance upon Him we may have wisdom to “refuse the evil, and choose the good.” Isaiah 7:15; James 1:5.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Presidents of conferences, you will be wise if you will decide to come to God. Believe in Him. He will hear your prayers, and come to your assistance, in much less time than the public conveyances could bring one, two, three, or four men, from a long distance at a great expense, to decide questions which the God of wisdom can decide far better for you. He has promised, “If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” [James 1:5.] If you will sincerely humble your hearts before Him, empty your soul of self-esteem, put away the natural defects of your character, overcome your love of supremacy, and come to God as a little child, He will bestow on you His Holy Spirit. When two or three shall agree as touching anything, and shall ask the Lord, in the name of Jesus, it shall be done for them.11LtMs, Ms 17, 1896, par. 16
For many years an education has been given to the people which places God second, and man first. The people have been taught that everything must be brought before the council of a few men in Battle Creek. God has given you an opportunity to see the weakness of finite men. Are there not men in the different states of America who walk right in the sight of God. Are there not registered in the books of heaven the names of those who love and serve God. Cannot they plan. Have those in Battle Creek been given superior reason and wisdom that God will not give those in the churches and state conferences? “If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” [Verse 5.] The churches would realize one hundredfold more of the workings of the Holy Spirit if ministers would educate all to bear in mind that they have a God nigh at hand, and not afar off, and that they can honor God by seeking Him for help and wisdom just where they are. Then will they have ability which will strengthen the General Conference.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” [James 1:5.] Mercy and love and wisdom are to be found in God, but many who profess to know Him, have turned from the One in whom our hope of eternal life is centered, and have educated themselves to depend upon their erring and fallible fellow men. They are crippled spiritually when they do this, for no man is infallible, and his influence may be misleading. He who trusts in man not only leans upon a broken reed and gives Satan an opportunity to introduce himself, but he hurts the one in whom the trust is placed; he becomes lifted up in his estimation of himself, and loses the sense of his dependence upon God. Just as soon as man is placed where God should be, he loses his purity, his vigor, his confidence in God’s power. Moral confusion results, because his powers become unsanctified and perverted. He feels competent to judge his fellow men, and strives unlawfully to be a god over them.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

You are not to ask and then go right along as though you did not expect anything. You are not to ask to use for your own pleasure. No! No! We are to be sober, to put solid timbers into our lives. We are to enquire at every step, Is this what Jesus would have me do? We need not be swayed this way and that, for He is more willing to give us power to remain steadfast than we are to ask. Letters come to me in which the writers ask me to pray for them. But Christ is praying for them. All they need is to carry their soul-distress to Jesus. He says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee.” [See Isaiah 41:13.] This is what I try to write to them. I tell them not to go to any human being for the help that Christ alone can give. He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. It is natural for us to have much self-confidence and to follow our own ideas, and in so doing we separate from God; and we do not realize how far we are from him until the sense of self-security is so firmly established that we are not afraid of failure. We should be much in prayer. We need Jesus as our counselor; at every step we need him as our guide and protector. If there was more praying, more pleading with God to work for us, there would be greater dependence upon him, and faith would be strengthened to take him at his word. This faith would honor our Redeemer. It would be easier to believe that if we ask for grace or wisdom, we shall receive it, because his word says, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” [Matthew 7:7; James 1:5.]Gospel Workers (1915 ed.)

Go forward, put on the whole armor, serve the Lord with your whole hearts. We shall find not the futility of man power, but the sure strength of an Omnipotent arm. I call upon all who are graciously blessed with the precious light of Bible truth to walk humbly with God and do not exchange the counsel and wisdom the Lord gives for any supposed wisdom of any living man. If God has given human agencies wisdom, He has efficiencies in store for those who need it and will appreciate it. “If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally, and upbraideth not and it shall be given him.” [James 1:5.] Some are full of picking at defects and thus make themselves defective.17LtMs, Ms 237, 1902, par. 6

Brethren, be cautious. Do not be led astray by any man’s supposed wisdom. God is your helper. Trust in God. Be sure and bear in mind that we are God’s little children to be led and guided of the Lord in every step. We must seek unto God. We must not let any man that lives decoy us from our steadfast faith in God to follow any other man’s judgment. Man has no more wisdom than that which he obtains from God. Look to Him who is the source of all wisdom and then walk in the light of the Word of God. Read chapter one of First John and take it in its simplicity. “If any man lack wisdom”—and that means any man—“let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” [James 1:5.] He does not find fault with you, and He does not reprove you. Go to Him in your poverty of soul. If any one of you realizes a poverty of soul, you may know just where to go. Go to One who can cure that poverty, One who has the bread of eternal life. And what is that bread that you are to feed upon? “He that eateth the bread of life shall have eternal life.” What is that bread? He says, “It is my body.” It is My blood. That is the food that we are to eat, and if you eat such food as that, let me tell you, it will reveal itself in your disposition. “He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life” [John 6:54], and if we have eternal life, we shall manifest that, not in a wavering sort of a way,—as though we do not know what we believe or what we think. We believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. We take Him at His word.19LtMs, Ms 157, 1904, par. 14
But you must receive it by faith. “He that doubteth and is unbelieving is just like a wave of the sea, tossed with the wind,” and he is an uncertain thing. [See James 1:6.] It is very moveable all the time. What we want is to have that sure faith that God has given us from the very first in 1844. And we have been receiving more and more and still more light. Now, this is the evidence of our being upon the rock, our being in harmony with Christ and in harmony with His followers. We want every one of you to understand that every pin, every pillar that God has established in our first experience after the passing of the time, we want you to understand that it was the Lord planting the rock upon which we are to stand. Not a particle of it is it to be moved. That is the truth that will stand the test of ages, and the test of trial that is coming upon us.In Heavenly Places

I advised him to pray in faith that God would give him light, for His promise is sure: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally ... and it shall be given him. We have asked wisdom of God, and He says He giveth to all men—how? In such a stinted measure? No, liberally and what? Upbraideth not. And what does He say? You ask in faith, and do not waver about it. There is the trouble; we go from our petitions and do not know whether we are blessed or not. We say, I wish that I did know. What does that mean? You said it, Lord, but I don’t believe it. You must ask without wavering, “for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed.” [James 1:5, 6.] He is tossed right between the waves. One wave after another comes and our faith goes out like water out of a leaky vessel. It is to believe and to watch unto prayer.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

It is difficult to know the best way to work in many of the places we visit, especially when they have had work done in them that amounts to but very little. We find many obstacles to be met and overcome, which thing we could not possibly do in our own strength or in our own finite judgment. We feel not discouraged, for why should we? The Lord has given us large and rich promises fitting for every circumstance and occasion. Here is one: “If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not (our weakness and inefficiency); and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.” [James 1:5, 6.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

By the power of the Holy Spirit, we may do the works of Christ. “If any man lack wisdom,” He says again, “Let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith.” [James 1:5, 6.] That is the only condition. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” [Matthew 7:7.] Though we are transgressors of the law of God, yet if we repent in faith, God can work through us the works of Christ.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

As I have been made to understand the manner this Board has treated such questions, if he takes the matter to his God he will be taught of God, and will locate himself as God shall direct him. If he has faith in God and trusts in Him who is wise in counsel, he will not be left in uncertainty. The heavenly Teacher is infinite in wisdom, He cannot err. If we ask of God we have the promise that He will hear, He will answer us. “If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not and it shall be given him. I feel sad that you do not feel impressed by the Spirit of God to come to New South Wales. I do not desire you to come unless you yourself have some burden. I do not believe in men depending upon the judgment and wisdom of other men, to know their duty in regard to going to any field upon the face of the earth. Men may make propositions, they may lay out the field and its necessity; and then they must leave the matter for the one who is ready to do God’s service unselfishly, to seek counsel of God, and obtain the counsel of heaven. Do we not read, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed.” [James 1:5, 6.] You cannot get this wisdom by looking to Battle Creek, or to any other place. Asking Help From God. When men in their human wisdom frame something new and strange to present to the churches, they show that they need to learn of Christ and obtain the knowledge that is according to the faith which is in Jesus Christ. What is the chaff to the wheat? Of what value are the theories of human production when compared with the truths of God’s Word? Of what value are the words falling from lips untouched by a living coal from God’s altar? There are those who present to the people of God fables and suppositions which they declare they must accept or perish in their sins. Let God’s people pray to Him for clear spiritual discernment, that they may distinguish the theories of men from the Word of the living God. Let them study the Scriptures. Why do they not, with Bible in hand and on bended knee, ask for the presence of the Holy Spirit, that they may have wisdom and understanding? Precious will be the experience thus gained. It is the right of every soul to ask much of God. Do not make the words of men your standard. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. There must be entire conformity to the will of God. There must be less self-measurement and more, very much more, Christlike practice. There must be more earnest, persevering prayer. Prayer is acceptable only when offered in faith and in the name of the Redeemer. Our faith must grasp the glorious fact that God hears and answers the prayers of every sincere seeker. As the believer bows in supplication before God, and in humility and contrition offers his petition from unfeigned lips, keeping his eyes fixed steadily on the Mediator of the new covenant, he loses all thought of self. His mind is filled with the thought of what he must have in order to build up a Christlike character. He prays, “Lord, if I am to be a channel through which Thy love is to flow day by day and hour by hour, I claim by faith the grace and power that Thou hast promised.” He fastens his hold firmly on the promise, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Are we doing the work that Christ did as a medical missionary? Are we setting in operation means to relieve the needs of suffering humanity? Are we giving the bread of life to those who are hungry for it? Those who are not doing this work would better go apart till they can give evidence that they are used by the Lord, that they are fishers of men. Our American brethren need in their meetings the converting power of God. They need the sweetness and fragrance of true sympathy. They need to see what is to be done and do it. They need to learn the art of saving souls. They will then realize how much hard, painstaking effort is called for in order to gain success in this work. And if any one lack wisdom, “let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. Their accusations were borne by Moses in uncomplaining silence. It was the experience gained during the years of toil and waiting in Midian—the spirit of humility and long-suffering there developed—that prepared Moses to meet with patience the unbelief and murmuring of the people and the pride and envy of those who should have been his unswerving helpers. Moses “was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth,” and this is why he was granted divine wisdom and guidance above all others. Says the Scripture, “The meek will He guide in judgment: and the meek will He teach His way.” Psalm 25:9. The meek are guided by the Lord, because they are teachable, willing to be instructed. They have a sincere desire to know and to do the will of God. The Saviour’s promise is, “If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine.” John 7:17. And He declares by the apostle James, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5. But His promise is only to those who are willing to follow the Lord wholly. God does not force the will of any; hence He cannot lead those who are too proud to be taught, who are bent upon having their own way. Of the double-minded man—he who seeks to follow his own will, while professing to do the will of God—it is written, “Let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.” James 1:7.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

There are ways by which the Lord leads and guides His people. God has all wisdom and all knowledge. He has said, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5. Oh, that all those who claimed to be God’s chosen servants would have felt that they were in need of wisdom, in the place of their feeling the perfect wholeness which they did feel. Much talking and inflaming one another were not wanting, and ridiculing those whom God had raised up to do a special work. These had, like brethren, taken their Bibles and searched the Scriptures and bowed upon their knees before God in earnest prayer, claiming the promises of God for divine guidance.6LtMs, Lt 85, 1889, par. 9
In this time of peril, as we are nearing the period of an important crisis, it is only reasonable that we should expect something of the revealings of greater light to the people. How did these men who had allowed their minds to be filled with prejudice and jealousy know but God had made these men messengers to give light and truth to the people? What right had they to set themselves in dead array against these ministers of Christ, even if they thought that their ideas did conflict with previous ideas on some points? Why not spend the hours together in prayer to God, in fasting, in deep heart-searching? “Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. Asking in Faith
1TT 204.2
Men, women, and youth, God requires you to possess moral courage, steadiness of purpose, fortitude and perseverance, minds that cannot take the assertions of another, but which will investigate for themselves before receiving or rejecting, that will study and weigh evidence, and take it to the Lord in prayer. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” Now the condition: “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.” James 1:5-7. This petition for wisdom is not to be a meaningless prayer, out of mind as soon as finished. It is a prayer that expresses the strong, earnest desire of the heart, arising from a conscious lack of wisdom to determine the will of God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Seeking for wisdom from God in true faith is a matter of no uncertainty. “If any man lack wisdom,” the apostle declares, “let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering; for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.” James 1:5-7. Our only safety is in heeding this inspired counsel. We have reached out altogether too much to human beings for help. Counsel has been asked from men who are not taught by God, in whose hearts Christ does not abide. These men depend largely on their own wisdom and experience. Into their counsel they weave their own spirit, their own likes and dislikes. Their advice bears the same features as their minds. They are guided by their feelings and impressions, and often they discourage plans which should be encouraged and encourage where they should discourage. They have not the mind of Christ; therefore, barriers are thrown in the way of the work that the Lord Himself impressed His co-laborers with the importance of doing. On the other hand, they sanction that which the Lord has not sanctioned.4LtMs, Ms 2, 1883, par. 6
How many of the presidents of our conferences have armed themselves with the mind that is in Christ? How many, by unceasing watchfulness and prayer, have strengthened the things which remain? I have been shown that instead of going to God for wisdom, our ministers have gone to the president of the General Conference. But the Lord has not made him your mediator. He has not been invested with a supply of wisdom for the presidents of the state conferences. Jesus is the fountainhead of wisdom, and our supply must be received from Him. Those who look to the president of the General Conference are crippled and dwarfed; whereas, if they would look to God, they would find grace and strength to help in every time of need. “If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” [Verse 5.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

If you are in doubt or difficulty about any matter of duty or business, seek wisdom of God as a little child and the promise is, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. God declares, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.” [James 1:5.] He will never be sent away empty. It is God’s purpose that His people shall constantly increase in ability, in tact, in skill. To each one He says, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” [2 Timothy 2:15.] God has ordained that men and women shall learn where to go to find the Source of strength. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” [James 1:5.] Why are we so reluctant to take the help He offers? Why do we so often seek to quench our thirst at broken cisterns? Why are we so well satisfied to lean on human beings for aid? Why do we turn to humanity for help? God “giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” But he who asks must ask in faith, nothing wavering. “For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.” [Verses 6, 7.] We shall receive according to our faith. We who are on our way to another country need the presence of God, and those whom we have left behind also need to inquire constantly at the throne of grace, “Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?” Those who live in close fellowship with Christ will be promoted by him to positions of trust. The servant who does the best he can for his master is admitted to familiar intercourse with the One whose commands he loves to obey. In the faithful discharge of duty we may become one with Christ. The one who talks most familiarly with his divine Leader has the most exalted conception of His greatness, and is the most obedient to His commands. We must learn the meaning of the destruction of two of our largest institutions. We cannot afford to look with indifference on these things. What lesson is God teaching us? Is He not trying to show us the need of closely examining ourselves, that we may see whether we be in the faith or not? Is He not trying to lead us to give more thought to the subject of the time in which we are living? The signs of the times fulfilling all around us show us that the end of all things is at hand. Intense earnestness should take possession of us. Our slumbering energies should be aroused by persevering effort. Consecrated workers should go forth into the field and move understandingly forward, clearing the King’s highway, obtaining victories in new places. Let the Lord’s workers labor in faith and trust. Some for whom they work will listen to the message and accept the truth. Let them do what God has commanded them to do. Proportionate to their faith will be their success. Far-fetched suppositions are not needed. There is to be no lording it over God’s heritage, as there has been in the past.
