If there is not that perfect harmony existing between us, we should not feel that we ourselves are not at all to blame in the matter. If another’s thoughts and feelings are not in the same channel as our own, we should not feel that they are all wrong and we are right. We want to constantly keep the mind at the right point, to answer the prayer of Christ in John 17:21-23. We want to know what is the yoke Christ bids us take, and the burdens we are to carry at this time, and constantly seek in kindness and love to show our brother that we have an interest in him and bring love into our actions day by day. This is the gold tried in the fire—faith and love. If we see one in error on any point, we should not pass along and say nothing, but we must try to bring him out from darkness into light. We must guard each other’s interests as we do our own. We do not value the soul as we should. We ought to be united in one great brotherhood and be in that place where we can bear with the faults of one another with all longsuffering and meekness and seek to bear one another’s burdens. “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice, and be ye kind one to another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor. ... Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters, according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, (lest ye be unguarded, and be disrespectful of authority.) In singleness of heart, as unto Christ; not with eye service, as men pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will [of God] from the heart,” working from principle and not from selfish motives or impulse. “With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.” [Ephesians 4:29-32; 5:1, 2; 6:5-9.] These words of inspiration are to be studied and obeyed. They cannot be ignored nor disregarded, nor treated with indifference. It is the doers of the Word that are to receive the reward.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

No provision has been made for Christians to draw apart from each other. By our unity and love we are to reveal the character of Christ. “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and has given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God, for a sweet smelling savor.” [Ephesians 5:1, 2.] There is a class named in this chapter that we are not to associate with. “Be ye therefore followers of God as dear children. And walk in love as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor.” [Ephesians 5:1, 2.] In the wonderful prayer of Christ recorded in the seventeenth chapter of John, He said, “Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: as thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given Him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.Manuscript Releases, vol. 11 [Nos. 851-920]

The mission of Christ to earth was to seek and to save the sinner—not in his sins, but from his sins. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: which hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ unto himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved: in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.” “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children: and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor.” [Ephesians 1:3-7; 5:1, 2.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The angels of God have seen a condition of things in the church that has grieved them and grieved the Spirit of God. It is a lack of unity, the lack of love the members have shown for one another. The apostle exhorts us, “Be ye therefore followers of God as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor.” [Ephesians 5:1, 2.] Shall we not work on this principle?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Dearly Beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your conversation honest among the Gentiles, that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.” [1 Peter 2:9-12.] “Be ye therefore followers of God as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor.” [Ephesians 5:1, 2.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Will my brother walk humbly with God? Will he choose his own society, his own company, and separate if possible from anyone who will not put away their ideas and plans and accept His? Have you read Philippians 2:1-16? Will you practice the Word of God? This Word of God Paul gives to his brethren, and you need it just as much. The fourth verse including the fifth is appropriate to you, and should be seen in your practice. [Read] Colossians 3:12-17. Practice the truth in words, in spirit, in action. “Be ye therefore imitators of God as beloved children, and walk in love, even as Christ also loved you.” [Ephesians 5:1, 2.] We must have on our staff men who are reliable, men who are not devoting their talents to earthly, temporal things. These talents belong to God, and should be devoted to His service, but it requires tact and skill and the grace of Christ to be faithful workers, to secure the very best talent for the honor and glory of God. Men are not to be educated to do haphazard work. We have a message to bear to the world, a character to reveal after the similitude of Christ. Earnestness, fervor, and enthusiasm without extravagance in attitude or language, will always be a power. With these characteristics the speaker will be to the people as the living voice of God.Manuscript Releases, vol. 7 [Nos. 419-525]

You must see and feel deeply if you are to have a saving influence. Be doers of the Word. The Lord calls for every soul to be patient, kind, forebearing, not giving loose rein to their impatient, unreasonable spirit, for it is catching as a contagious disease. This ground is specified as a place where the Lord presides. “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” [Ephesians 5:1, 2.] Then if you are co-laborers with Jesus Christ, you will be fragrant as was Christ in good works. You will prize your talent of words and will speak those things and do the works which will be a savor of life unto life and not of death unto death.Jesus, Name Above All Names

We have the fullest faith in laboring for sinners to be converted, but we have not a particle of light from God to regard sinners as saints, and those who love God, our brethren, regard as sinners because sinners mistrust them and complain and murmur against them. “Be ye therefore followers of God as dear children: and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks” [Ephesians 5:1-4].18MR 243.2

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” [Matthew 5:9.] Can you claim the blessing in your home life? Do you obey the injunction of God, “Walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering [and a] sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor?” [Ephesians 5:2.] No Christian lives for himself. He is to be as a branch of the living Vine, deriving his nourishment and life-giving properties from the Vine. The Great Teacher says, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” [John 15:4.]9LtMs, Lt 34, 1894, par. 17
The exhortation of the apostle is, “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children: and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor.” [Ephesians 5:1, 2.] The love of Christ abiding in the heart has a softening, subduing influence upon the rugged character, and there is continual evidence in spirit and conversation that we belong to Christ and are following His example. It is the possession of this love in purity and holiness that makes our sacrifices acceptable to God as a sweet smelling savor. By the character of the fruit of the daily life, by the self-denial and self-sacrifice for the good of others, it is made evident that we are branches of the true vine, conforming our lives unto the divine pattern.9LtMs, Lt 34, 1894, par. 18

But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that ye have heard Him, and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt concerning the former lusts; but be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.25LtMs, Ms 17, 1911, par. 23

Many think that they have eternal life in the Scriptures, and yet they do not receive the living Christ as their personal Saviour. They have a theoretical knowledge of the Word, but are strangers to its sanctifying power on heart and character. We are enjoined to “Walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor.” [Ephesians 5:2.] Self-denial and self-sacrifice [are] surrendering self to God. “Walk in the light.” [1 John 1:7.] To walk in the light means to resolve, to exercise thought, to exert will power, in an earnest endeavor to represent Christ in sweetness of character. It means to put away all gloom. You are not to rest satisfied simply in saying, “I am a child of God.” Are you beholding Jesus, and, by beholding, becoming chanced into His likeness? To walk in the light means advancement and progress in spiritual attainments. Paul declared, “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect; ... but forgetting those things which are behind,” constantly beholding the Pattern, I reach “forth unto those things which are before.” [Philippians 3:12, 13.] To walk in the light means to “walk uprightly,” to walk “in the way of the Lord,” to “walk by faith,” to “walk in the Spirit,” to “walk in the truth,” to “walk in love,” to “walk in newness of life.” [Psalm 84:11; 2 Kings 21:22; 2 Corinthians 5:7; Galatians 5:16; 3 John 4; Ephesians 5:2; Romans 6:4.] It is “perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” [2 Corinthians 7:1.]Faith and Works

“Christ also hath loved us,” writes Paul, “and hath given Himself for an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor.” [Ephesians 5:2.] This is the oblation of a life-gift in our behalf, that we may be all that He desires us to be—representatives of Him, expressing the fragrance of His character, His own pure thoughts, His divine attributes as manifested in His sanctified human life, in order that others may behold Him in His human form, and, comprehending God’s wonderful design, be led to desire to be like Christ—pure, undefiled, wholly acceptable to God, without spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Christ gave His life for the salvation of the world. One place is not to be worked over and over again, while other parts of God’s world are left barren and unworked. God’s only begotten Son gave His life as a propitiation for the sins of the whole world. He who knew no sin was made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. “Christ also hath loved us,” Paul writes, “and hath given Himself for [us] an offering, and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor.” [Ephesians 5:2.] This He did that we may be all that He desires us to be—representatives of Him, living lives that reveal His fragrance of character, His purity of thought. Lift up Jesus, you that teach the people, lift Him up in sermon, in song, in prayer. Let all your powers be directed to pointing souls, confused, bewildered, lost, to “the Lamb of God.” Lift Him up, the risen Saviour, and say to all who hear, Come to Him who “hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us.” [Ephesians 5:2.] Let the science of salvation be the burden of every sermon, the theme of every song. Let it be poured forth in every supplication. Bring nothing into your preaching to supplement Christ, the wisdom and power of God. Hold forth the word of life, presenting Jesus as the hope of the penitent and the stronghold of every believer. Christ told Mary the meaning of her act, and in this He gave her more than He had received. “In that she hath poured this ointment on My body,” He said, “she did it for My burial.” As the alabaster box was broken, and filled the whole house with its fragrance, so Christ was to die, His body was to be broken; but He was to rise from the tomb, and the fragrance of His life was to fill the earth. Affection may be as clear as crystal and beauteous in its purity, yet it may be shallow because it has not been tested and tried. Make Christ first and last and best in everything. And as your love for Him increases, your love for each other will grow deeper and stronger. “We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory.” 2 Corinthians 3:18. Are not similar sins still committed, in the face of warnings as solemn and explicit? We are as directly forbidden to indulge covetousness as was Achan to appropriate the spoils of Jericho. God has declared it to be idolatry. We are warned, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Matthew 6:24. “Take heed, and beware of covetousness.” Luke 12:15. “Let it not be once named among you.” Ephesians 5:3. We have before us the fearful doom of Achan, of Judas, of Ananias and Sapphira. Back of all these we have that of Lucifer, the “son of the morning,” who, coveting a higher state, forfeited forever the brightness and bliss of heaven. And yet, notwithstanding all these warnings, covetousness abounds. From Eternity Past

A cheerful, happy, contented mind will never be found with those who are loving, petting and living for their own selfish pleasure, those who are seeking for happiness by gratifying their own desires, seeking for change and amusement, repining and complaining of ills and disappointments. If the attention is mainly devoted to the service of self, that mind that has no higher aim, will be barren, desolate and unsatisfied. Happiness is not found by those who are seeking for it. In the path of duty there is happiness. Doing good to others, forgetfulness of self, will result in peace and happiness. Unless your daughter meets with a thorough conversion, she will be weighed in the balance and found wanting. Her conversion is too superficial. She has not laid the foundation right. Storms, adversity and winds will carry away the house that is not built upon the rock, but on sliding sand. A circumstantial religion will not stand the trial of the day of the God. Frivolity and foolish talking and jesting and joking is classed in the Word of God with filthiness, fornication, and all uncleanness. Ephesians 5:3.Ephesians 5:4

All pride, all selfishness, all self-importance must be cut away from all teachers. All the sang-froid which is so common, the theatrical gestures, all lightness and trifling, all jesting and joking, must be seen by the one who wears Christ’s yoke to be “not convenient” [Ephesians 5:4], an offense to God, and a denial of Christ. It unfits the mind for solid thought and solid labor. It makes men inefficient, superficial, and spiritually diseased.Ephesians 5:5

There are among us those who are continually seeking to confederate with the world in order to make a display or to gain some desired end. Encourage none of these things. The churches are to be faithfully and patiently instructed against becoming entangled with the world. If His people are not led and controlled by the Spirit of God, they will make strange moves. At this time the words of the apostle especially apply: “Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.” [Ephesians 5:6.] God’s people are to be converted daily from every evil way.Ephesians 5:6-8

There should be far keener perception on the part of God’s people. Every talent should be brought into exercise that we may obtain a title to the immortal inheritance. “Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” [Ephesians 5:6-8.] “Ye are all the children of light and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” [Ephesians 6:10, 11.] Where do we see his wiles? They are certainly in this world. Where are they? Is it not best for us to be wide awake, to discern the Lord’s side of the question? “Let no man deceive you with vain words; for because of these things the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.” [Ephesians 5:6.] We shall have just such a class among us to try our faith.7LtMs, Lt 16a, 1892, par. 28
Now the warning: “Be not ye therefore partakers with them, for ye were sometime darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord; walk as children of light.” “For the fruit of the Spirit is in”—smooth words and fair speeches?—“all goodness and righteousness and truth: proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame to speak of those things that are done of them in secret. But all things are reproved and made manifest by the light, for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” [Verses 7-14.]7LtMs, Lt 16a, 1892, par. 29
Just such an awakening is essential at this time in California. “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil. O for the Holy Spirit to work with and through human instrumentalities. A Precious Experience. He who takes up the work of canvassing as he should must be both an educator and a student. While he tries to teach others he himself must learn to do the work of an evangelist. As canvassers go forth into the field with humble hearts, full of earnest activity, they will find many opportunities to speak a word in season to souls ready to die in discouragement. After laboring for these needy ones they will be able to say: “Ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord.” Ephesians 5:8. As they see the sinful course of others they can say: “Such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:11.This Day With God

Follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.” [2 Timothy 2:14, 22-25.] “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth:) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.” [Ephesians 5:8-10.]Ephesians 5:8-17

We are to remember that we are not our own, to treat according to our fancy. We are God’s property. By serving God we are brought into collision with common opinions and modes of thinking and practice, but this is not to influence us to wrong. “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light; for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” [Ephesians 5:11-17.]12LtMs, Ms 140, 1897, par. 14
The reason why there are so many decided failures in missionary lines is because self is not under God’s discipline, but is wrestling for recognition. “Ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord; walk as children of the light. (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.” [Ephesians 5:8-10.] If this had been done, there would be more men with well-balanced minds, men fit to be “laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] No one can be a laborer together with God, and yet manifest an ambition to be the highest. Envy, love for the supremacy, evil-speaking, self-gratification, are altogether too common among professed Christians.Ephesians 5:9

Christ and God have a work to do for you which you cannot do. But it is your work to take special pains to think and to bear in mind, I am fearfully and wonderfully made. An active conscience and correct judgment are essential on your part. A healthy body is necessary for a healthy mind. Do your part, which the Lord has assigned you, to preserve the laws of life and health. Christ is our life, just as in the body the life is in the blood. Christ abiding in the soul is the life blood of the soul. He is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification, as well as our redemption. There is no part of the spiritual being but [that] Christ is the living supply. Galatians 5:22. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” [Verses 22, 23.] “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” [Verse 25.] Ephesians 5:9. “For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth. Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.” [Verses 9, 10.] Christ is to us all and in all. Is not Christ in us the hope of glory? Is not the abiding presence of Christ in the soul life, as the blood dwells and moves in the veins? <Christ is> the source and pledge of our joy and glory and hope? “As thou, Father, art in me and I in thee.” <He prays,> “That they also may be one in us: ... I in them and thou in me, ... that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.” [John 17:21, 23, 26.] The blood is formed in the body from the food eaten. So Christ is formed in us from eating His flesh and drinking His blood.Ephesians 5:10-18

Magic and Superstition
CCh 331.2
Through spiritualism many of the sick, the bereaved, the curious, are communicating with evil spirits. All who venture to do this are on dangerous ground. The word of truth declares how God regards them. In ancient times He pronounced a stern judgment on a king who had sent for counsel to a heathen oracle: “Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.” 2 Kings 1:3, 4. The magicians of heathen times have their counterpart in the spiritualistic mediums, the clairvoyants, and the fortune-tellers of today. The mystic voices that spoke at Endor and at Ephesus are still by their lying words misleading the children of men. Could the veil be lifted from before our eyes, we should see evil angels employing all their arts to deceive and to destroy. Wherever an influence is exerted to cause men to forget God, there Satan is exercising his bewitching power. When men yield to his influence, ere they are aware the mind is bewildered and the soul polluted. The apostle’s admonition to the Ephesian church should be heeded by the people of God today: “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” Ephesians 5:11.592The Acts of the Apostles, 288-290The Voice in Speech and Song

He lifts the danger signal, to warn us away from such associations, lest we become partakers of their evil deeds. No greater contempt could be shown to the Creator than the contempt manifested for the day which He has sanctified. And as Satan with his human agencies pushes the warfare against God by leading men to trample on the Sabbath, the few who do honor God should be aroused to greater zeal and earnestness in its defense; the Calebs must press to the front. God is saying to all who are dead in sin, “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead.” Ephesians 5:14. That word is eternal life. As the word of God which bade the first man live, still gives us life; as Christ’s word, “Young man, I say unto thee, Arise,” gave life to the youth of Nain, so that word, “Arise from the dead,” is life to the soul that receives it. Many are deceived as to their true condition before God. GC88 601.2
Many are deceived as to their true condition before God. They congratulate themselves upon the wrong acts which they do not commit, and forget to enumerate the good and noble deeds which God requires of them, but which they have neglected to perform. It is not enough that they are trees in the garden of God. They are to answer his expectation by bearing fruit. He holds them accountable for their failure to accomplish all the good which they could have done, through his grace strengthening them. In the books of Heaven they are registered as cumberers of the ground. Yet the case of even this class is not utterly hopeless. With those who have slighted God’s mercy and abused his grace, the heart of long-suffering love yet pleads. “Wherefore he saith, Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, ... redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” [Ephesians 5:14-16.]Ephesians 5:14-17

God now calls for large-hearted, large-minded young men, who are not trifling, who hear the Word of God and obey it. “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, that Christ shall give thee light. See that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not as unwise, but as understanding what the will of the Lord is.” [Ephesians 5:14-17.] “I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.” [1 John 2:14.]Ephesians 5:14-27

This is our time of heart-searching, of self-criticism. Those who step aside into false paths are the ones who show such eagerness to criticize the wrongs that they suppose exist in others. They think that this will cover their own defects. In this, the great day of atonement, let us make confession to God and follow the steps of Jesus. Christ “loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish.” [Ephesians 5:25-27.]Ephesians 5:15

God help you, my brother, to be a true Christian, consistent today, consistent tomorrow, always solid in speech, with no frivolity, no lifeless or trifling words. He is reaching up unto Christ, and does not fall into spiritual declension. “Walk as wise men, not as fools.” [Ephesians 5:15.] My brother, seek to be a well-built Christian, having a character symmetrical in all its parts. “See that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise.” [Ephesians 5:15.] We are warned in the Scriptures to avoid the very appearance of evil. Workers for God are never to do anything that would bring the slightest reproach upon the cause they represent. Their behavior should give no occasion for any to speak evil of them. They should beware of anything that would lower their ideas as to what constitutes correct deportment, anything that would lead them to regard a departure from purity as of no special consequence. Propriety of deportment, honest industry, and deep piety are to be revealed in their lives.Ephesians 5:15-16

Nothing can avail to keep the soul steadfast under the strife of sharp, stinging, faultfinding words, but cherishing a continual reverence for the Word of God. Search the Bible earnestly, and when you think your brethren have not treated you as Christians should treat a fellow man, sing to the Lord, instead of answering back. Let us not be ashamed to invent means to stop the flow of angry words. “See then, that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting yourselves to one another in the fear of God.” [Ephesians 5:15-21.]Ephesians 5:15-27
The Acts of the Apostles
Chapter 45—Written From Rome
AA 470.1
The apostle’s desire for those to whom he addressed his letters of counsel and admonition was that they should “be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine;” but that they should all come into “the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” He entreated those who were followers of Jesus in heathen communities not to walk “as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God ... because of the blindness of their heart,” but “circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time.” Ephesians 4:14, 13, 17, 18; 5:15, 16. He encouraged the believers to look forward to the time when Christ, who “loved the church, and gave Himself for it,” would “present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing”—a church “holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:25, 27.Ephesians 5:15-29

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands in the fear of God, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church; and He is the Saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church.” [Verses 22-29.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 18 [Nos. 1301-1359]

Do not abandon yourselves to despair, but heed the words of Christ, “Be watchful and strengthen the things that remain, that are ready to die.” [Revelation 3:2.] When the eyesalve is applied, many will see as never before their life of unfulfilled duties, and will be conscience-stricken. But the words of the inspired apostle present, now, just now, hope to those who have been lagging behind and now are trembling for the future. He says, “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” [Ephesians 5:16.] Remember, all depends on the use you make henceforth of your entrusted talents. O, let it no longer be a source of grief to the heavenly intelligences, and to Him who has paid such an infinite price for souls, that you refuse to be channels of light, that you refuse to co-operate with the heavenly agencies for the salvation of souls! But let us “awake out of sleep,” and put all our God-given abilities into the work, that it may be written in the books that we are “redeeming the time; for the days are evil.” [Romans 13:11; Ephesians 5:16.] If we keep our talents in inaction we lose all ability to make use of them. The mind is a gift of God, designed to be improved and developed that we may be able to enlighten others; but it may be perverted and misused in doing Satan’s work.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

It is one of Satan’s boldest schemes to hold the minds and harden the hearts of those who give themselves to the work. Now in order that they may understand what has been done to hinder the outworking of infinite love, there will need to be on the part of some a thorough work of self-examination, for their own religious interest, and a discarding of the experiences of the past from our present and future work. Let our ministers be wide-awake; let them consecrate mind and heart in simplicity and meekness to the work of undoing every wrong that in the past they have allowed to exist, to the injury of many souls, “redeeming the time because the days are evil.” [Ephesians 5:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

Remember that when you speak unwisely, you show that you have not learned in the school of Christ. Let God’s servants act like wise men, remembering the work in every part of the world is to assist the work in every other part. “Be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” [Ephesians 5:17.] God has kept the unworked condition of the Southern field continually before His people. He points you to this destitute portion of His vineyard and bids you remember that a picture is taken by the heavenly Artist of the field just as it now is. The Australian field and the Southern field are as surely part of the Lord’s vineyard as is Michigan or California. But they are not worked as they should be, and favorable opportunities to advance the truth are passing. For years means have been used in ways that have not accomplished the most for the Lord. These barren, unworked fields should present an altogether different appearance. There is now to be a thorough understanding of this matter. There should be hundreds of workers in these fields. In no case is one part of the Lord’s vineyard to be favored above another part. This is not the Lord’s plan.Ephesians 5:17-20

He lets go of his father’s hand, and he walks away from his father. The child is nearing a dangerous path, a steep precipice. The father sees the danger of his child and calls, “Come away. Go no farther in that path.” The child sees no danger; the ground seems firm beneath his feet; the path is strewn with flowers, and he is not willing to heed the voice. If the people who lived before the Flood had been obedient to the Word of God they would not have perished by the waters of the Flood. If the Israelites had been obedient to the words of God, He would have bestowed upon them special blessings. But they fell in consequence of the indulgence of appetite and passion. They would not be obedient to the words of God. Indulgence of perverted appetite led them into numerous and grievous sins. If they had made the requirements of God their first consideration, and their physical wants secondary, in submission to God’s choice of proper food for them, not one of them would have fallen in the wilderness. They would have been established in the goodly land of Canaan, a holy, happy people with not a feeble one in all their tribes.
