Context of Psalms 18:7
5Cords of death entangled me. Torrents of Belial overwhelmed me. 6Cords of Sheol coiled around me. Snares of death came before me. In my distress I called on Adonai, and cried to my God for help. From His Temple He heard my voice, my cry before Him came into His ears. 8Then the earth rocked and quaked. The foundations of mountains trembled. They reeled because He was angry. 9Smoke rose from His nostrils and consuming fire from His mouth. Coals blazed from Him.

The representation of the storm in these verses must be allowed by all skillful and impartial judges to be truly sublime and noble, and in the genuine spirit of poetry. The majesty of God, and the manner in which he is represented as coming to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Then the earth shook and trembled - The description which follows here is one of the most sublime that is to be found in any language. It is taken from the fury of the storm and tempest, when all the elements are in commotion; when God seems to go forth in the greatness of his majesty and the terror of his power, to prostrate everything before him. We are not to regard this as descriptive of anything which literally occurred, but rather as expressive of…Read the comment
