Context of Numbers 14:43
41But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the mouth of Adonai? That will never succeed. 42You should not go up, because Adonai will not be among you and you will be defeated before your enemies! For the Amalekites and Canaanites are there in front of you, and you will fall by the sword. Adonai will not be with you, because you turned away from following Adonai.” 44But presumptuously they went up to the high mountain country, though neither the Ark of Adonai’s covenant nor Moses moved from within the camp. 45The Amalekites and Canaanites living in the mountain country came down, attacked them, and beat them down all the way to Hormah.

Commentaries on Numbers 14:43
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 40-45Verses 40-45 Some of the Israelites were now earnest to go forward toward Canaan. But it came too late. If men would but be as earnest for heaven while their day of grace lasts, as they will be when it is over, how well would it be for them! That which has been duty in its season, when mistimed, may be turned into sin. Those who are out of the way of their duty, are not under God's protection, and go at their peril. God bade them go, and they would not…Read the comment
