Context of Numbers 14:43
41But Moses asked, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? Your plan won’t work! 42Don’t go! You will be defeated by your enemies because the Lord is not with you. The Amalekites and Canaanites are there, and you will die in battle. Now that you have turned away from the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.” 44But they headed into the mountain region anyway, even though the ark of the Lord’s promise and Moses stayed in the camp. 45The Amalekites and Canaanites who lived there came down from those mountains, attacked the Israelites, and defeated them at Hormah.

Commentaries on Numbers 14:43
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 40-45Verses 40-45 Some of the Israelites were now earnest to go forward toward Canaan. But it came too late. If men would but be as earnest for heaven while their day of grace lasts, as they will be when it is over, how well would it be for them! That which has been duty in its season, when mistimed, may be turned into sin. Those who are out of the way of their duty, are not under God's protection, and go at their peril. God bade them go, and they would not…Read the comment
