Context of Nahum 3:8

6Yes, I will fling filth on you. I will treat you with contempt and set you up as a spectacle. 7So it will be that all who see you will recoil from you and say, “Nineveh has been ravaged! Who will lament for her?” Where will I find comforters for you? Are you better than No-amon, situated among channels of the Nile, water surrounding her, whose fortress and wall was water ? 9Cush and Egypt were her might—unlimited. Put and Libya were her allies. 10Yet she went off to exile among the captives. Even her babes were dashed to pieces at the head of all streets. They cast lots for her dignitaries, and all her great men were bound with chains.

Commentaries on Nahum 3:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Art thou better than populous No - No-Ammon, or Diospolis, in the Delta, on one branch of the Nile. This is supposed to be the city mentioned by Nahum; and which had been lately destroyed, probably by the Chaldeans. The waters round about it - Being situated in the Delta, it had the fork of two branches of the Nile to defend it by land; and its barrier or wall was the sea, the Mediterranean, into which these branches emptied themselves: so that this city…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Art thou better - More populous or more powerful, “than the populous No?” rather than No-Ammon, so called from the idol Ammon, worshiped there. No-Ammon, (or, as it is deciphered in the Cuneiform Inscriptions, Nia ), meaning probably “the portion of Ammon”, was the sacred name of the capital of Upper Egypt, which, under its common name, Thebes, was far-famed, even in the time of Homer, for its continually accruing wealth, its military power, its 20,000…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-19Verses 8-19 Strong-holds, even the strongest, are no defence against the judgments of God. They shall be unable to do any thing for themselves. The Chaldeans and Medes would devour the land like canker-worms. The Assyrians also would be eaten up by their own numerous hired troops, which seem to be meant by the word rendered "merchants." Those that have done evil to their neighbours, will find it come home to them. Nineveh, and many other cities, states…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8Thebes was a historic capital of Egypt. The city stood on both sides of the Nile River in Upper Egypt. Thebes became most famous during Egypt’s New Kingdom period, from 1550 to 1069 BC. During this time, it served as the main political, religious, and cultural center of the nation. By the 600s BC, Thebes was no longer Egypt’s capital. Even so, it remained a large and active city.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. populous No--rather, as Hebrew, "No-ammon," the Egyptian name for Thebes in Upper Egypt; meaning the portion or possession of Ammon, the Egyptian Jupiter (whence the Greeks called the city Diospolis), who was especially worshipped there. The Egyptian inscriptions call the god Amon-re, that is, Amon the Sun; he is represented as a human figure with a ram's head, seated on a chair (Jr 46:25; Eze 30:14-16). The blow inflicted on No-ammon, described in Na…Read the comment
