Context of Malachi 3:11
9You have been cursed with the curse, yet you keep robbing Me—the whole nation! 10Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. Then there will be food in My House. Now test Me in this”—says Adonai-Tzva’ot—“if I will not open for you the windows of heaven, and pour out blessing for you, until no one is without enough. I will rebuke the devouring pest for you, so it will not destroy the fruit of your land, nor will your vine be barren in the field,” Adonai-Tzva’ot says. 12“All the nations will call you blessed. For you will be a land of delight,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot. 13“Your words against Me are grievous,” says Adonai. Yet you say: “What did we say against You?”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11And I will rebuke the devourer - , the locust, caterpillar, or any like scourge of God. It might be, that when the rain watered the fields, the locust or caterpillar etc. might destroy the grain, so that the labors of man should perish; wherefore he adds, “I will rebuke the devourer. Neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time,” holding out a fair promise, but cut off by the frost-wind or the hail; the blossoms or the unripe fruit strewing the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-12Verses 7-12 The men of that generation turned away from God, they had not kept his ordinances. God gives them a gracious call. But they said, Wherein shall we return? God notices what returns our hearts make to the calls of his word. It shows great perverseness in sin, when men make afflictions excuses for sin, which are sent to part between them and their sins. Here is an earnest exhortation to reform. God must be served in the first place; and the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-12Malachi’s fifth message repeats the first message (Malachi 1:2–5) by emphasizing God's faithfulness to his promises. He urges Israel to be equally faithful in worship, especially by giving their tithes and offerings. If Malachi is like a courtroom scene, the fifth message is the judge’s decision. The main message is repentance. God desires honest and sincere worship from his people, of which tithing is a symbol.Read the comment
