Context of Jeremiah 48:18
16“Moab’s calamity will come soon, and his downfall hastens swiftly. 17Mourn for him, all who are around him, all who know his name. Say: ‘How the mighty scepter, the splendid rod, is broken!’ O daughter dwelling in Dibon come down from your glory and sit in thirst! For Moab’s destroyer has come to you. He has devastated your strongholds. 19O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the road and watch— ask him fleeing and her escaping, ‘What has happened?’ 20Moab is disgraced, indeed shattered. Wail and shriek! Declare by the Arnon, Moab is ruined!

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Sit in thirst - Jeremiah draws a picture of the conquered inhabitants, collected outside the walls, waiting for their captors to march them away to the slave mart. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-47Verses 14-47 . The destruction of Moab is further prophesied, to awaken them by national repentance and reformation to prevent the trouble, or by a personal repentance and reformation to prepare for it. In reading this long roll of threatenings, and mediating on the terror, it will be of more use to us to keep in view the power of God's anger and the terror of his judgments, and to have our hearts possessed with a holy awe of God and of his wrath, than to…Read the comment
