Context of Jeremiah 48:18
16Moab will soon come to an end. Terrible trouble will quickly destroy it. 17You nations that live around Moab, you know how famous it has been. But now you must weep for it. Say, “Moab's royal power is finished! They no longer have great power to rule!” You people who live in Dibon must stop being proud. Come down from the places where people give you honour. Sit on the ground in the dirt. Moab's cruel enemy has arrived. They will cause your strong buildings to become heaps of stones. 19You people who live in Aroer, stand beside the road and watch. Ask the people who are running away what has happened. 20They will reply, “The enemy has won against Moab and its people are ashamed. So weep and cry out! Stand beside the Arnon river and tell the news. Tell people that the enemy has destroyed Moab.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Sit in thirst - Jeremiah draws a picture of the conquered inhabitants, collected outside the walls, waiting for their captors to march them away to the slave mart. The enemy occupied with plundering the houses of Dibon thinks little of the hunger and thirst of his prisoners. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-47Verses 14-47 . The destruction of Moab is further prophesied, to awaken them by national repentance and reformation to prevent the trouble, or by a personal repentance and reformation to prepare for it. In reading this long roll of threatenings, and mediating on the terror, it will be of more use to us to keep in view the power of God's anger and the terror of his judgments, and to have our hearts possessed with a holy awe of God and of his wrath, than to…Read the comment
