Context of Isaiah 1:7
5Where will you be struck again, as you stray away more and more? The whole head is sick, the whole heart faint. 6From the foot to the head there is no soundness. Wounds, bruises and raw sores: not pressed, nor bandaged, nor softened with oil. Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire; your fields, strangers devour it in your presence—a desolation, overthrown by strangers. 8So the Daughter of Zion is left as a sukkah in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city. 9Unless Adonai-Tzva’ot had left us a small remnant, we would have been as Sodom, we would have been as Gomorrah.

Commentaries on Isaiah 1:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7At the end of the verse, זרים zarim . This reading, though confirmed by all the ancient versions, gives us no good sense; for "your land is devoured by strangers; and is desolate, as if overthrown by strangers," is a mere tautology, or, what is as bad, an identical comparison. Aben Ezra thought that the word in its present form might be taken for the same with זרם zerem, an inundation: Schultens is of the same opinion; (see Taylor's Concord.); and…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Your country is desolate - This is the literal statement of what he had just affirmed by a figure. In this there was much art. The figure Isaiah 1:6 was striking. The resemblance between a man severely beaten, and entirely livid and sore, and a land perfectly desolate, was so impressive as to arrest the attention. This had been threatened as one of the curses which should attend disobedience; Leviticus 26:33: And I will scatter you among the heathen, And…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7land … cities: By 701 BC, the Assyrians had destroyed the infrastructure, captured cities, and devastated the fields (see Isaiah 64:10). This fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy (Isaiah 6:11–13). Those who survived the Assyrian attack learned to heed later warnings of exile to Babylon (Isaiah 39:6–7). God fulfills his promises, so his warning of judgment on all nations is certain.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Judah had not in Uzziah's reign recovered from the ravages of the Syrians in Joash's reign (2Ch 24:24), and of Israel in Amaziah's reign (2Ch 25:13, 23, &c.). Compare Isaiah's contemporary (Am 4:6-11), where, as here (Is 1:9, 10), Israel is compared to "Sodom and Gomorrah," because of the judgments on it by "fire." in your presence--before your eyes: without your being able to prevent them. desolate, &c.--literally, "there is desolation, such as one…Read the comment
