Context of Genesis 34:13
11Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, “Would that I find favor in your eyes! Whatever you say to me I’ll give. 12Set the dowry and the presents as high as you like and I’ll give whatever you say to me. But give me the young woman as a wife.” But Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully as they spoke, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. 14They said to them, “We can’t do this thing—give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised—for this is a disgrace to us. 15Only by this will we consent to you: if you will become like us, by circumcising every male.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-31Verses 1-31 - Dinah‘s Dishonor This chapter records the rape of Dinah and the revenge of her brothers. Genesis 34:1-5 Dinah went out to see the daughters of the land. The Jewish doctors of a later period fix the marriageable age of a female at twelve years and a day. It is probable that Dinah was in her thirteenth year when she went out to visit the daughters of the land. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. The sons of Jacob answered--The honor of their family consisted in having the sign of the covenant. Nothing is said of their teaching the people to worship the true God, but only of their insisting on their being…Read the comment
