Context of Genesis 22:16
14Abraham named that place, Adonai Yireh,—as it is said today, “On the mountain, Adonai will provide.” 15The angel of Adonai called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “By myself I swear—it is a declaration of Adonai—because you have done this thing, and you did not withhold your son, your only son, 17I will richly bless you and bountifully multiply your seed like the stars of heaven, and like the sand that is on the seashore, and your seed will possess the gate of his enemies. 18In your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed—because you obeyed My voice.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16By myself have I sworn - So we find that the person who was called the angel of the Lord is here called Jehovah; See note on Genesis 22:2. An oath or an appeal to God is, among men, an end to strife; as God could swear by no greater, he sware by himself: being willing more abundantly, says the apostle, to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, he confirmed it by an oath, that two immutable things, (his Promise and his Oath), in…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-19Verses 15-19 There are high declarations of God's favour to Abraham in this confirmation of the covenant with him, exceeding any he had yet been blessed with. Those that are willing to part with any thing for God, shall have it made up to them with unspeakable advantage. The promise, ver. #(18), doubtless points at the Messiah, and the grace of the gospel. Hereby we know the loving-kindness of God our Saviour towards sinful man, in that he hath not…Read the comment

Abraham lifted up his eyes ... and behold ... a ram, &c.--No method was more admirably calculated to give the patriarch a distinct idea of the purpose of grace than this scenic representation: and hence our Lord's allusion to it (Joh 8:56).Read the comment
