Context of Ezekiel 39:20

18You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth—as rams, lambs, goats, bulls—all of them fatlings of Bashan. 19So you will eat fat until you are gorged and you will drink blood until you are drunk, from My sacrificial feast that I have prepared for you. You will be filled at My table with horses and horsemen, with mighty men and all the warriors.’” It is a declaration of Adonai. 21“I will put My glory among the nations. All the nations will see My judgment that I will execute and My hand that I will lay on them. 22The house of Israel will know that I am Adonai their God, from that day onward.

His judgments were the consequence of their sins; and these sins once abandoned, the favor of their God will return in yet more abundance. Ezekiel 39:29 Compare Acts 2:17. • Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-22Verses 11-22 How numerous the enemies which God destroyed for the defence of his people Israel! Times of great deliverances should be times of reformation. Every one should help the utmost he can, toward cleansing the land from reproach. Sin is an enemy every man should strive against. Those engaged in public work, especially of cleansing and reforming a land, ought to be men who will go through with what they undertake, who will be always employed. When…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-20In most sacrificial feasts, people eat animals that have been offered as sacrifices. In this feast, the situation is reversed. Animals would eat the bodies of defeated enemies, as if they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls. This scene is the opposite of the great banquet described in Isaiah 25:6. In that future feast, God’s people are invited to celebrate. Here, God’s enemies become the meal instead of the guests.Read the comment
