Context of Ezekiel 39:20

18You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, as though they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls, all of them fatlings of Bashan [east of the Jordan]. 19So you will eat fat until you are filled and drink blood till you are drunk, at the sacrificial feast which I have prepared for you. You will eat your fill at My table with horses and riders, with mighty men, and with all the men of war,” says the Lord God. 21“And I will bring [and manifest] My glory among the nations; and all the nations will see My judgment and justice [in the punishment] which I have executed and My hand which I have laid on them. 22So the house of Israel will know [with absolute confidence] that I am the Lord their God from that day forward.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17-29Verses 17-29 The purposes of the past dispensation shall be made clear to God‘s people themselves and to the pagan. • Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-22Verses 11-22 How numerous the enemies which God destroyed for the defence of his people Israel! Times of great deliverances should be times of reformation. Every one should help the utmost he can, toward cleansing the land from reproach. Sin is an enemy every man should strive against. Those engaged in public work, especially of cleansing and reforming a land, ought to be men who will go through with what they undertake, who will be always employed. When…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-20In most sacrificial feasts, people eat animals that have been offered as sacrifices. In this feast, the situation is reversed. Animals would eat the bodies of defeated enemies, as if they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls. This scene is the opposite of the great banquet described in Isaiah 25:6. In that future feast, God’s people are invited to celebrate. Here, God’s enemies become the meal instead of the guests.Read the comment
