Context of Ezekiel 35:12

10“Because you said: ‘These two nations and these two lands will be mine! We will possess them’—though Adonai was there— 11“therefore, as I live”—it is a declaration of Adonai—“I will deal with you with the same anger and envy that you had because of your hatred against them. I will make Myself known among them, when I judge you. You will know that I, Adonai, have heard all your blasphemies that you uttered against the mountains of Israel saying: “They are laid desolate—they are given for us to devour!” 13You have magnified yourselves against Me with your mouth. You multiplied your words against Me. I heard it.” 14Thus says Adonai Elohim: “When the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-15Verses 10-15 When we see the vanity of the world in the disappointments, losses, and crosses, which others meet with, instead of showing ourselves greedy of worldly things, we should sit more loose to them. In the multitude of words, not one is unknown to God; not the most idle word; and the most daring is not above his rebuke. In the destruction of the enemies of the church, God designs his own glory; and we may be sure that he will not come short of his…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-15This message of judgment is directed to Edom, Israel’s neighbor to the southeast. It is also called Mount Seir, the main mountain region of Edom. Edom stands as a symbol of all Israel’s enemies. For example, Edom rejoiced when Israel fell (Ezekiel 36:2; see also 25:12–14). When Babylon destroyed Judah, Edom may have thought it had a chance to grow stronger. However, the Lord said that its success would not last long.Read the comment
