Context of Exodus 9:7
5Also Adonai set a specific time, saying, “Tomorrow Adonai will do this thing in the land.” 6Then the next day, Adonai did the deed. All the cattle of Egypt died, yet of the cattle of Bnei-Yisrael, not one died. When Pharaoh inquired, there was not so much as one of the cattle of Bnei-Yisrael dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was stubborn, and he did not let the people go. 8Then Adonai said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from the furnace, and have Moses throw it heavenward in the sight of Pharaoh. 9It will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and will become boils erupting with sores on both men and animals throughout all the land.”

Commentaries on Exodus 9:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7And Pharaoh sent, etc. - Finding so many of his own cattle and those of his subjects slain, he sent to see whether the mortality had reached to the cattle of the Israelites, that he might know whether this were a judgment inflicted by their God, and probably designing to replace the lost cattle of the Egyptians with those of the Israelites.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Was hardened - See Exodus 4:21. Pharaoh probably attributed the exemption of the Israelites to natural causes. They were a pastoral race, well acquainted with all that pertained to the care of cattle; and dwelling in a healthy district probably far more than the rest of Lower Egypt.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-7The fifth plague was against the livestock. As with the withholding of flies from the area where the Hebrews lived (8:22–23), the distinction between the livestock of the Israelites and that of the Egyptians (9:4) shows that a natural explanation of this event is insufficient, even if the previous plagues contributed. The Egyptians, like many in the ancient Near East, worshiped the ram, the goat, and the bull as representing power and fertility. These…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Pharaoh sent ... there was not one of the cattle of the Israelites dead--The despatch of confidential messengers indicates that he would not give credit to vague reports, and we may conclude that some impression had been made on his mind by that extraordinary exemption, but it was neither a good nor a permanent impression. His pride and obstinacy were in no degree subdued.Read the comment
