Context of Exodus 13:5
3Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, on which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage. For by a strong hand Adonai brought you out from this place. No hametz may be eaten. 4This day, in the month of Aviv, you are going out. When Adonai brings you into the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you are to observe this service during this month. 6For seven days you are to eat matzah , and the seventh day is to be a feast to Adonai. 7Matzot is to be eaten throughout the seven days, and no hametz is to be seen among you, nor within any of your borders.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5When the Lord shall bring thee into the land - Hence it is pretty evident that the Israelites were not obliged to celebrate the Passover, or keep the feast of unleavened bread, till they were brought into the promised land.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5The Canaanites - Five nations only are named in this passage, whereas six are named in Exodus 3:8, and ten in the original promise to Abraham, Genesis 15:19-21. The first word “Canaanite” is generic, and includes all the Hamite races of Palestine.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5a land flowing with milk and honey: This describes a land that is rich and good for farming. There is grass for cattle to eat, and there are many plants and flowers. From these flowers, bees can make honey.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-75-7. when the Lord shall bring thee--The passover is here instituted as a permanent festival of the Israelites. It was, however, only a prospective observance; we read of only one celebration of the passover during the protracted sojourn in the wilderness [Nu 9:5]; but on their settlement in the promised land, the season was hallowed as a sacred anniversary [Jos 5:10], in conformity with the directions here given.Read the comment
