Context of Ecclesiastes 1:5
3What does a person gain in all his labor that he toils under the sun? 4A generation comes, and a generation goes, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to the place it rises. 6The wind goes toward the south, and circles around to the north. Round and round it swirls about, ever returning to its circuits. 7All the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they go again.

Commentaries on Ecclesiastes 1:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5, Ecclesiastes 1:6; These verses are confused by being falsely divided. The first clause of the sixth should be joined to the fifth verse. "The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he ariseth; going to the south, and circulating to the north."Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Hasteth - literally, at his place panting (in his eagerness) riseth he there.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-8Verses 4-8 All things change, and never rest. Man, after all his labour, is no nearer finding rest than the sun, the wind, or the current of the river. His soul will find no rest, if he has it not from God. The senses are soon tired, yet still craving what is untried.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-11The Teacher starts by noting that every natural and historical activity has a repetitive cycle of coming and going, existing and not existing. This can cause some to feel that everything is meaningless. The Teacher quickly shifts from one topic to another and ends this section with the topic he began with, using a literary style that reflects the cycles he describes in nature and human history.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. (Psa 19:5, 6). "Panting" as the Hebrew for "hasteth"; metaphor, from a runner (Psa 19:5, "a strong man") in a "race." It applies rather to the rising sun, which seems laboriously to mount up to the meridian, than to the setting sun; the accents too favor Maurer, "And (that too, returning) to his place, where panting he riseth."Read the comment
