Context of Daniel 11:33
31“His forces will rise up and profane the fortified Temple; they will stop the daily offering and set up the abomination of desolation. 32With smooth words he will seduce those who act wickedly against the covenant, but the people who know their God will stand strong and prevail. Those who are wise among the people will instruct many, though for many days they will fall by the sword, or be burned, captured or pillaged. 34When they stumble, they will receive a little help, but many will join them deceitfully. 35Even some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the time of the end—for it will still come at the appointed time.

Instruct many - Preach the Gospel every where, and convert multitudes to the faith. Yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days - They were exposed to the malice and fury of their enemies, during Ten State Persecutions, and suffered all kinds of…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33And they that under stand among the people - Among the Hebrew people. The allusion is to such as, in those times of so general corruption and apostasy, should have a proper understanding of the law of God and the nature of religion. There were such in the days of Judas Maccabeus, and it is reasonable to suppose that they would endeavor to inculcate just views among the people. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-45Verses 31-45 The remainder of this prophecy is very difficult, and commentators differ much respecting it. From Antiochus the account seems to pass to antichrist. Reference seems to be made to the Roman empire, the fourth monarchy, in its pagan, early Christian, and papal states. The end of the Lord's anger against his people approaches, as well as the end of his patience towards his enemies. If we would escape the ruin of the infidel, the idolater, the…Read the comment

They shall be sorely persecuted, even to death (He 11:35, 36, 37; 2 Maccabees 6, 7). Their enemies took advantage of the Sabbath to slay them on the day when they would not fight.
