Context of 1 Kings 11:18
16Joab and all Israel remained there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom. 17But Hadad and some Edomites, servants of his father, had fled to Egypt, while Hadad was a small boy. Setting out from Midian they came to Paran and took men from Paran along with them, and went to Egypt—to Pharaoh king of Egypt—who gave him a house, allotted him food and gave him land. 19Then Hadad found great favor in Pharaoh’s eyes, so that he gave him his own sister-in-law, the sister of Queen Tahpenes, as wife. 20The sister of Tahpenes gave birth to his son Genubath. Tahpenes weaned him in Pharaoh’s palace and Genubath remained in Pharaoh’s palace among Pharaoh’s sons.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18These arose out of Midian - They at first retired to Midian, which lay to the southwest of the Dead Sea. Not supposing themselves in safety there, they went afterwards to Paran in the south of Idumea, and getting a number of persons to join them in Paran, they went straight to Egypt, where we find Hadad became a favourite with Pharaoh, who gave him his sister-in-law to wife; and incorporated him and his family with his own.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-25Verses 14-25 While Solomon kept close to God and to his duty, there was no enemy to give him uneasiness; but here we have an account of two. If against us, he can make us fear even the least, and the very grasshopper shall be a burden. Though they were moved by principles of ambition or revenge, God used them to correct Solomon.Read the comment

When David and Joab died, Hadad returned to Edom, waiting for a chance to strike back at Israel.Read the comment

In after years, the thought of his native land…Read the comment
