Context of Psalms 88:6
4I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength: 5Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand. Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. 7Thy wrath lieth heavy upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah. 8Thou hast put away my acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination to them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

Commentaries on Psalms 88:6
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit - That is, I am as if I were thus laid; the deep grave seems now to lie so certainly before me, that it may be spoken of as if it were already my abode. The words rendered “lowest pit” mean literally the pit under, or beneath. The reference is to the sepulchre, as in Psalm 88:4. In darkness - The dark grave; the realms of the dead. See the notes at Job 10:21-22. In the deeps - The caverns; the deep places of the earth…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-7In his first complaint, the psalmist blames the Lord for his suffering. God’s overwhelming anger does not make sense to him. The phrase the darkest of the depths might refer to: the place of the dead (Psalm 143:3; see Lamentations 3:6), or the deep sea (Psalms 68:22; 69:1–2).Read the comment
