Context of Psalms 88:6
4I am counted among those who go down to the pit (grave); I am like a man who has no strength [a mere shadow], 5Cast away [from the living] and abandoned among the dead, Like the slain who lie in a [nameless] grave, Whom You no longer remember, And they are cut off from Your hand. You have laid me in the lowest pit, In dark places, in the depths. 7Your wrath has rested heavily upon me, And You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah. 8You have put my friends far from me; You have made me an object of loathing to them. I am shut up and I cannot go out.

Commentaries on Psalms 88:6
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit - That is, I am as if I were thus laid; the deep grave seems now to lie so certainly before me, that it may be spoken of as if it were already my abode. The words rendered “lowest pit” mean literally the pit under, or beneath. The reference is to the sepulchre, as in Psalm 88:4. In darkness - The dark grave; the realms of the dead. See the notes at Job 10:21-22. In the deeps - The caverns; the deep places of the earth…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6-7In his first complaint, the psalmist blames the Lord for his suffering. God’s overwhelming anger does not make sense to him. The phrase the darkest of the depths might refer to: the place of the dead (Psalm 143:3; see Lamentations 3:6), or the deep sea (Psalms 68:22; 69:1–2).Read the comment
