Context of Psalms 88:6
4I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left. 5They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care. You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths. 7Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude 8You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.

Commentaries on Psalms 88:6
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit - That is, I am as if I were thus laid; the deep grave seems now to lie so certainly before me, that it may be spoken of as if it were already my abode. The words rendered “lowest pit” mean literally the pit under, or beneath. The reference is to the sepulchre, as in Psalm 88:4. In darkness - The dark grave; the realms of the dead. See the notes at Job 10:21-22. In the deeps - The caverns; the deep places of the earth…Read the comment

The phrase the darkest of the depths might refer to: the place of the dead (Psalm 143:3; see Lamentations 3:6), or the deep sea (Psalms 68:22; 69:1–2).Read the comment
