Context of Ezekiel 7:5
3Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send my anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thy abominations. 4And my eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thy abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. Thus saith the Lord GOD; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come. 6An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come. 7The morning is come upon thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the joyful shouting upon the mountains.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 7:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5An evil, an only evil - The great, the sovereign, the last exterminating evil, is come: the sword, the pestilence, the famine, and the captivity. Many MSS. read אחר achar, after. So evil cometh after evil; one instantly succeeds another.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5An only evil - An evil singular and remarkable above all others.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-9A second message repeats that the coming judgment would be personal. The people would not only know that God is the Lord, as in Ezekiel 7:4. They would feel his judgment in their own lives. The Lord, who once revealed himself to his people as “the LORD who heals you” (Exodus 15:26), had now become “the LORD, who strikes the blow.” The day of the Lord had arrived. This is a time when God steps in to judge and act in power (Joel 1:15; Amos 5:18–20).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. An evil, an only evil--a peculiar calamity such as was never before; unparalleled. The abruptness of the style and the repetitions express the agitation of the prophet's mind in foreseeing these calamities.Read the comment
