Context of Exodus 28:35

33And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, all around on its hem; and bells of gold between them all around: 34A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe around it. And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in to the holy place before the LORD, and when he cometh out, that he may not die. 36And thou shalt make a plate of pure gold, and engrave upon it, like the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD. 37And thou shalt put it on a blue lace, that it may be upon the mitre; upon the front of the mitre it shall be.

Commentaries on Exodus 28:35

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 35His sound shall be heard - The bells were doubtless intended to keep up the people's attention to the very solemn and important office which the priest was then performing, that they might all have their hearts engaged in the work; and at the same time to keep Aaron himself in remembrance that he ministered before Jehovah, and should not come into his presence without due reverence. That he die not - This seems an allusion to certain ceremonies which…Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-39Verses 31-39 The robe of the ephod was under the ephod, and reached down to the knees, without sleeves. Aaron must minister in the garments appointed. We must serve the Lord with holy fear, as those who know they deserve to die. A golden plate was fixed on Aaron's forehead, engraven with "Holiness to the Lord." Aaron was hereby reminded that God is holy, and that his priests must be holy, devoted to the Lord. This must appear in their forehead, in open…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31-35the robe of the ephod: The bells signaled that the priest was still moving and had not been struck dead by God's presence (see Leviticus 10:1–2). Jewish tradition says that the priest had a cord tied to his ankle. If he died in the Holy Place, others could drag his body out (Exodus 28:35).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-431. take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him--Moses had hitherto discharged the priestly functions (Psa 99:6), and he evinced the piety as well as humility of his character, in readily complying with the command to invest his brother with the sacred office, though it involved the perpetual exclusion of his own family. The appointment was a special act of God's sovereignty, so that there could be no ground for popular umbrage by the…Read the comment
