Context of Exodus 28:35

33You shall make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet fabric all around its hem, with gold bells between them; 34a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, all around the [bottom] hem of the robe. Aaron shall wear the robe when he ministers, and its sound shall be heard when he goes [alone] into the Holy Place before the Lord, and when he comes out, so that he will not die there. 36“You shall also make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engravings of a signet, ‘Holy to the Lord.’ 37You shall fasten it on the front of the turban with a blue cord.

Commentaries on Exodus 28:35

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 35His sound shall be heard - The bells were doubtless intended to keep up the people's attention to the very solemn and important office which the priest was then performing, that they might all have their hearts engaged in the work; and at the same time to keep Aaron himself in remembrance that he ministered before Jehovah, and should not come into his presence without due reverence. That he die not - This seems an allusion to certain ceremonies which…Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-39Verses 31-39 The robe of the ephod was under the ephod, and reached down to the knees, without sleeves. Aaron must minister in the garments appointed. We must serve the Lord with holy fear, as those who know they deserve to die. A golden plate was fixed on Aaron's forehead, engraven with "Holiness to the Lord." Aaron was hereby reminded that God is holy, and that his priests must be holy, devoted to the Lord. This must appear in their forehead, in open…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31-35the robe of the ephod: The bells signaled that the priest was still moving and had not been struck dead by God's presence (see Leviticus 10:1–2). Jewish tradition says that the priest had a cord tied to his ankle. If he died in the Holy Place, others could drag his body out (Exodus 28:35).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-431. take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him--Moses had hitherto discharged the priestly functions (Psa 99:6), and he evinced the piety as well as humility of his character, in readily complying with the command to invest his brother with the sacred office, though it involved the perpetual exclusion of his own family. The appointment was a special act of God's sovereignty, so that there could be no ground for popular umbrage by the…Read the comment
