Context of Psalms 72:17

15And they shall live; and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: and men shall pray for him continually; they shall bless him all the day long. 16There shall be abundance of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth. His name shall endure for ever; his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him; all nations shall call him happy. 18Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things: 19And blessed be his glorious name for ever; and let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen, and Amen.

Commentaries on Psalms 72:17

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 17His name shall endure for ever - Hitherto this has been literally fulfilled. Solomon is celebrated in the east and in the west, in the north and in the south; his writings still remain, and are received, both by Jews and by Gentiles, as a revelation from God; and it is not likely that the name of the author shall ever perish out of the records of the world. All nations shall call him blessed - Because of the extraordinary manner in which he was favored by…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17His name shall endure for ever - Margin, as in Hebrew, “Shall be forever;” that is, “He” shall endure forever. His name shall be continued as long as the sun - As long as that continues to shine - an expression designed to express perpetuity. See the notes at Psalm 72:5. The margin here is, “shall be as a son to continue his father‘s name forever.” The Hebrew word - נון nûn - means “to sprout, to put forth;” and hence, to “flourish.” The idea is that of…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 2-17Verses 2-17 This is a prophecy of the kingdom of Christ; many passages in it cannot be applied to the reign of Solomon. There were righteousness and peace at first in the administration of his government; but, before the end of his reign, there were troubles and unrighteousness. The kingdom here spoken of is to last as long as the sun, but Solomon's was soon at an end. Even the Jewish expositors understood it of the kingdom of the Messiah. Observe many…Read the comment
