Context of Psalms 140:8

6I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: give ear unto the voice of my supplications, O LORD. 7O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle. Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; further not his evil device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah 9As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them. 10Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

Let them not succeed in their designs against me. The prayer, however, “may” be used more generally. It is proper to pray that the desires of the wicked, as wicked people, may not be granted to them; that they may “not” be successful in their purposes. Success in such desires would be only an injury to…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 Believers may pray that God would not grant the desires of the wicked, nor further their evil devices.
