Context of Ezekiel 29:21
19Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I will give the land of Egypt unto Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall carry off her multitude, and take her spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his army. 20I have given him the land of Egypt as his recompence for which he served, because they wrought for me, saith the Lord GOD. In that day will I cause an horn to bud forth unto the house of Israel, and I will give thee the opening of the mouth in the midst of them; and they shall know that I am the LORD.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 29:21
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Will I cause the horn of the house of Israel to bud - This may refer generally to the restoration; but particularly to Zerubbabel, who became one of the leaders of the people from Babylon. Or it may respect Daniel, or Mordecai, or Jeconiah, who, about this time, was brought out of prison by Evil-merodach, and afterwards kindly treated.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17-21Verses 17-21 The prophet places this prediction out of chronological order, that he may point out what had not been stated in the foregoing prophecy, namely, that the agent who should strike the first blow on Egypt should be the Chaldaean king, Nebuchadnezzar. Ezekiel 29:18 Yet had he no wages - It is not improbable that the Tyrians before they surrendered their island-citadel managed to remove much of their treasure; but others exlplain the verse; that…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-21Verses 17-21 The besiegers of Tyre obtained little plunder. But when God employs ambitious or covetous men, he will recompense them according to the desires of their hearts; for every man shall have his reward. God had mercy in store for the house of Israel soon after. The history of nations best explains ancient prophecies. All events fulfil the Scriptures. Thus, in the deepest scenes of adversity, the Lord sows the seed of our future prosperity. Happy…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21Even when God judged other nations, he still focused on his own people. As Egypt grew weaker, God would make Israel strong again. I will cause a horn to sprout for the house of Israel: A horn was a common symbol of strength and dignity (see Psalm 132:17; compare Daniel 7:7–8; 8:3). This means that God would restore Israel’s strength and dignity. This restoration would also show that Ezekiel was a true prophet. Ezekiel had served the Lord faithfully. At…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2121. In the evil only, not in the good, was Egypt to be parallel to Israel. The very downfall of Egypt will be the signal for the rise of Israel, because of God's covenant with the latter. I cause the horn of ... Israel to bud--(Psa 132:17). I will cause its ancient glory to revive: an earnest of Israel's full glory under Messiah, the son of David (Lu 1:69). Even in Babylon an earnest was given of this in Daniel (Da 6:2) and Jeconiah (Jr 52:31). I will…Read the comment
