Context of Deuteronomy 18:2
1The priests the Levites, even all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance. And they shall have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath spoken unto them. 3And this shall be the priests’ due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep, that they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw. 4The firstfruits of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2The Lord is their inheritance - He is the portion of their souls; and as to their bodies, they shall live by the offerings of the Lord made by fire, i. e., the meat-offering, the sin-offering, and the trespass-offering; and whatever was the Lord's right, in these or other offerings, he gave to the priests.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2the LORD is their inheritance: The inheritance of the Levites was spiritual, not territorial or material. They possessed the Lord by giving their whole lives to his service. This idea is the remarkable reversal of the idea that the Lord possessed Israel (see 7:6).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-81. The priests the Levites ... shall eat the offerings--As the tribe of Levi had no inheritance allotted them like the other tribes but were wholly consecrated to the priestly office, their maintenance was to arise from tithes, first-fruits, and certain portions of the oblations presented on the altar, which God having by express appointment reserved to Himself made over, after being offered, to His ministers.Read the comment
