Context of Isaiah 7:11
9And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established. 10Moreover Yhwh spake again unto Ahaz, saying, Ask thee a sign of Yhwh thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. 12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt Yhwh. 13And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11Ask thee - Ask for “thyself;” ask a sign that shall be convincing to “thyself,” since thou dost not fully credit the words of the prophet. It is evident that the words of the prophet had made no impression on the mind of Ahaz. God, therefore, proposes to him to ask any “proof or demonstration” which he might select; anything that would be an indication of divine power that should put what the prophet had said beyond doubt. Had Ahaz put confidence in God…Read the comment

The prophet reproved Ahaz and his court, for the little value they had for Divine revelation. Nothing is more grievous to God than distrust, but the unbelief of man shall not make the promise of God of no effect; the Lord himself shall give a sign. How great soever your…Read the comment
