Context of Exodus 15:14
12Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them. 13Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation. The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina. 15Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away. 16Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O Yhwh, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-18Verses 1-18 With the deliverance of Israel is associated the development of the national poetry, which finds its first and perfect expression in this magnificent hymn. It was sung by Moses and the people, an expression which evidently points to him as the author. That it was written at the time is an assertion expressly made in the text, and it is supported by the strongest internal evidence. In every age this song gave the tone to the poetry of Israel…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-15Philistia, Edom, Moab, and Canaan are the four peoples that would be most affected by God's judgment when he gave their land to the people of Israel. News of what God did to Egypt was probably well-known in that region (see Rahab’s report in Joshua 2:9–11, where it uses the same imagery as in Exodus 15:15, "will melt away").Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-271. Then sang Moses and the children of Israel--The scene of this thanksgiving song is supposed to have been at the landing place on the eastern shore of the Red Sea, at Ayoun Musa, "the fountains of Moses." They are situated somewhat farther northward along the shore than the opposite point from which the Israelites set out. But the line of the people would be extended during the passage, and one extremity of it would reach as far north as these…Read the comment
