Context of 2 Chronicles 11:18

16And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek Yhwh God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto Yhwh God of their fathers. 17So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon. And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse; 19Which bare him children; Jeush, and Shamariah, and Zaham. 20And after her he took Maachah the daughter of Absalom; which bare him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18This is probably an extract from the “genealogies” of Iddo 2 Chronicles 12:15. As Jerimoth is not mentioned among the legitimate sons of David 1 Chronicles 3:1-8; 1 Chronicles 14:4-7, he must have been the child of a concubine. Abihail was probably the “grand-daughter,” not “daughter,” of Eliab 1 Samuel 16:6; 1 Samuel 17:13; 1 Chronicles 2:13.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-23Verses 13-23 When the priests and Levites came to Jerusalem, the devout, pious Israelites followed them. Such as set their hearts to seek the Lord God of Israel, left the inheritance of their fathers, and went to Jerusalem, that they might have free access to the altar of God, and be out of the temptation to worship the calves. That is best for us, which is best for our souls; in all our choices, religious advantages must be sought before all outward…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-22Rehoboam likely had the same number of wives and children throughout his reign, not just by his fifth year. He loved his second wife more than his first, so he broke the rule of primogeniture (inheritance belonging to the firstborn son, Deuteronomy 21:15–17) by making Abijah the next king, possibly in a co-regency. This action ensured a smooth succession.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. Rehoboam took Mahalath--The names of her father and mother are given. Jerimoth, the father, must have been the son of one of David's concubines (1Ch 3:9). Abihail was, of course, his cousin, previous to their marriage.Read the comment
