Context of Mark 7:35
33Jesus led him away from the crowd so they could be alone. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then, spitting on his own fingers, he touched the man’s tongue. 34Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened!” Instantly the man could hear perfectly, and his tongue was freed so he could speak plainly! 36Jesus told the crowd not to tell anyone, but the more he told them not to, the more they spread the news. 37They were completely amazed and said again and again, “Everything he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who cannot speak.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-37Verses 31-37 Here is a cure of one that was deaf and dumb. Those who brought this poor man to Christ, besought him to observe the case, and put forth his power. Our Lord used more outward actions in the doing of this cure than usual. These were only signs of Christ's power to cure the man, to encourage his faith, and theirs that brought him. Though we find great variety in the cases and manner of relief of those who applied to Christ, yet all obtained the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31-37This miracle is very similar in order and wording to the healing of the blind man in 8:22–26. Healing miracles in the Gospels often follow a similar pattern. As these stories were told and retold, their form and wording likely became more consistent. This miracle also includes a change of location. Some think the next miracle happened in a Gentile area such as Sidon or the Decapolis. However, it is more likely that it took place after Jesus returned to…Read the comment
