Context of Leviticus 27:16
14“If someone dedicates a house to the Lord, the priest will come to assess its value. The priest’s assessment will be final, whether high or low. 15If the person who dedicated the house wants to buy it back, he must pay the value set by the priest, plus 20 percent. Then the house will again be his. “If someone dedicates to the Lord a piece of his family property, its value will be assessed according to the amount of seed required to plant it—fifty shekels of silver for a field planted with five bushels of barley seed. 17If the field is dedicated to the Lord in the Year of Jubilee, then the entire assessment will apply. 18But if the field is dedicated after the Year of Jubilee, the priest will assess the land’s value in proportion to the number of years left until the next Year of Jubilee. Its assessed value is reduced each year.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Some part of a field - Though the preceding words are not in the text, yet it is generally allowed they should be supplied here, as it was not lawful for a man to vow his whole estate, and thus make his family beggars, in order to enrich the Lord's sanctuary: this God would not permit. The rabbins teach that the land or field, whether good or bad, was valued at forty-eight shekels, for all the years of the jubilee, provided the field was large enough to…Read the comment

Thus the value of about 5 1/2 bushels (an homer) was about 6 pounds, 9 shillings, 2d. (50 shekels. See Exodus 38:24.)Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-25Verses 14-25 Our houses, lands, cattle, and all our substance, must be used to the glory of God. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-21The cost to consecrate a field depended on the years left until the next Year of Jubilee (see Leviticus 25:24–28). If not redeemed, the property became the priests' to use as they wanted. Redeeming a field cost 120 percent of its valuation (see 27:11–13). If a landowner consecrated his field without redeeming it, it did not return to his family in the Year of Jubilee.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 16-2416-24. if a man shall sanctify unto the Lord some aprt of a field of his possession, &c.--In the case of acquired property in land, if not redeemed, it returned to the donor at the Jubilee; whereas the part of a hereditary estate, which had been vowed, did not revert to the owner, but remained attached in perpetuity to the sanctuary. The reason for this remarkable difference was to lay every man under an obligation to redeem the property, or stimulate his…Read the comment
