Context of Ezekiel 8:1
Then on September 17, during the sixth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity, while the leaders of Judah were in my home, the Sovereign Lord took hold of me. 2I saw a figure that appeared to be a man. From what appeared to be his waist down, he looked like a burning flame. From the waist up he looked like gleaming amber. 3He reached out what seemed to be a hand and took me by the hair. Then the Spirit lifted me up into the sky and transported me to Jerusalem in a vision from God. I was taken to the north gate of the inner courtyard of the Temple, where there is a large idol that has made the Lord very jealous.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1In the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month - This, according to Abp. Usher, was the sixth year of Ezekiel's captivity. The sixth day of the fifth month of the ecclesiastical year, which answers to August A.M. 3410. This chapter and the three following contain but one vision, of which I judge it necessary, with Calmet, to give a general idea, that the attention of the reader may not be too much divided. The prophet, in the visions…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1The elders of Judah - The prophet‘s fellow-exiles are no longer unwilling to hear him Ezekiel 2:1-10. They sat as mourners. The message here is not as in Ezekiel 6:2, but distinctly to Judah, that portion of the people whose exile Ezekiel shared.Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1We are now in the sixth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity (see study note on Ezekiel 1:2). Fourteen months have passed since Ezekiel first saw his opening vision. During most of that time, the prophet had been acting out the sign acts described in Ezekiel 4. These were symbolic actions that showed what would happen to Jerusalem. Ezekiel 8–9 describes, in visions, the same defilement (moral and spiritual uncleanness) and judgment of Jerusalem that…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-18Eze 8:1-18. This eighth chapter begins a new stage of Ezekiel's prophecies and continues to the end of the eleventh chapter. The connected visions at Eze 3:12-7:27 comprehended Judah and Israel; but the visions (Eze 8:1-11:25) refer immediately to Jerusalem and the remnant of Judah under Zedekiah, as distinguished from the Babylonian exiles. 1. sixth year--namely, of the captivity of Jehoiachin, as in Eze 1:2, the "fifth year" is specified.
