Context of 2 Chronicles 29:20
18Then the Levites went to King Hezekiah and gave him this report: “We have cleansed the entire Temple of the Lord, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the Bread of the Presence with all its utensils. 19We have also recovered all the items discarded by King Ahaz when he was unfaithful and closed the Temple. They are now in front of the altar of the Lord, purified and ready for use.” Early the next morning King Hezekiah gathered the city officials and went to the Temple of the Lord. 21They brought seven bulls, seven rams, and seven male lambs as a burnt offering, together with seven male goats as a sin offering for the kingdom, for the Temple, and for Judah. The king commanded the priests, who were descendants of Aaron, to sacrifice the animals on the altar of the Lord. 22So they killed the bulls, and the priests took the blood and sprinkled it on the altar. Next they killed the rams and sprinkled their blood on the altar. And finally, they did the same with the male lambs.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-36Verses 20-36 As soon as Hezekiah heard that the temple was ready, he lost no time. Atonement must be made for the sins of the last reign. It was not enough to lament and forsake those sins; they brought a sin-offering. Our repentance and reformation will not obtain pardon but in and through Christ, who was made sin, that is, a sin-offering for us. While the offerings were on the altar, the Levites sang. Sorrow for sin must not prevent us from praising…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-36To start sanctifying the temple, the Levites first sanctified themselves. They likely purified themselves by bringing offerings (see 2 Chronicles 30:15). Then they began to cleanse the temple. Two steps were needed to restore the temple: Purification (removing pollution, 2 Chronicles 29:15–17) Sanctification (rededicating the temple for holy worship, 2 Chronicles 29:20–36)Read the comment
